John Connolly will be at the Club on the 26th - very entertaining singer with lots of chat in between and if you didn't know already, composer of the ''Trad'' ''Irish'' song Fiddlers Green.

Coming up we have a local showcase night with Zoe Bottomley, and others to be confirmed on 17th July.

We have a committee meeting on 18th July in the Pub - all are invited to attend.

Worth of note is the Barnsley Original Music Festival (BOM FEST) at the Miners' Memorial Park on Sat 22nd July, a free music festival, with an Acoustic and Roots stage - Rotherham Artist Julie Ellison will be performing, amongst others TBC.

You can drop in on us anytime at the website http://www.sandlizard.f9.co.uk/barnsleyfolk
email us on barnsleyfolk@sandlizard.f9.co.uk
or leave a message below,

Sarah :)

Anybody know how to spell Conolly?
John at the club this Monday at 8.30pm

For those that havent yet checked out our Web site, Sarah, Dave Bottomley and John Platt with Zoe Bottomley did a superb job at Barnsley MBCs Mid Summer Solstice at Durty O'Dwyres last Wednesday

The group practice every Monday has gone from strength to strength and I believe Dave and Zoe (Dave's daughter) have also been over to Beverley as Zoe is at University in Hull

Zoe has a really lovely singing voice gets better everytime I hear her
Sarah has a lovely new fiddle!!
Michelle also sang at Durty's and Terry did a stirling job earlier in the evening

Anyone interested in trad group harmony singing? I would like to hear from
Ray Padgett ~ Barnsley Folk Club Chairman

Well it is refreshing to see that people get John's surname correct.

Is Fiddlers Green traditional when it was composed by somebody who is still alive i.e. John Conolly?

The thing I like about John, and he has been on at my club a number of times, is you never know what set he is going to do.
He has a lot of charisma, very funny and sings some great songs, accompanying himself with guitar and melodeon. He is a thoroughly nice bloke and IMHO really worth seeing.

I'll just ring him up and get my commission LOL :-)

This man (together with Bill Meek) is responsible for getting me into folk music in the mid sixties - so now you all know who to blame.

And he is a very nice man too.

Entertained in the old style of patter and song and reminiscenses and virtually all his own songs ~ seamlessly

Barnsley had a night of high class songs and music
Thanks to all~ and John Conolly!

What a brilliant night we had last night!!
Should a gathering of youthful talented musicians, we even had some singing from 'em

Never seen as many young ladies (with their blokes) for very many years!

Zoe Bottomley says she's not a musician, yes she is; she means she's not an instrumentalist (Dave her dad is a brill guitarist and accompaniest)

Zoe gains in confidence all the time and choice of material from Kate Rusby to what she likes

James Meadows really nice player of Banjo and I think works part time with The Music room at Cleckheaton

Chappy that finished off the night very very professional and says hes already sung with a band at Glastonbury (among others)
His name is Leon O'Doherty any body heard of him?

Also BOM (Barnsley Original Music) are have a fest over the weekend coming
I think more info on our Barnsley Folk Club Web site
( I hope to be at Warwick FF with Jimmy Mc Donald Malcolm Speake and Chris Lowe and have another song or two with Alhambra this weekend)

Thanks for the mentions of BOMFest and Julie's slot on the acoustic stage there. She's on stage at 4:45pm for a 40 minute set (we think!). The BOM (Barnsley Original Music) people are a great bunch and have transformed the music scene in Barnsley in recent years. Well worth supporting.

At the risk of a thread hijack I can also mention that Julie is on BBC Radio Sheffield as a guest on the Bernie Clifton show on Sunday 23rd July, shortly after 4pm, and will be doing a "Transatlantic Double Bill" with Nashville-based Canadian singer songwriter Tia McGraff at the Blah Bar, Barnsley on Thursday 27th July. Advance tickets (at £6 rather than £8 on the door) from the venue or from 01724 735 349.

Ironically I never made it over to Barnsley FC when we lived in the area (we moved this week from Rotherham to N. Lincolnshire) but I am pleased to see the club so active.

"Is the Blah Bar putting this promotion on themselves?"

The first time Julie appeared at the venue Tony Heald was promoting. It was a great gig so, after Tony had stopped promoting there, when we wanted to put on a gig in the area with Julie and Eddie Baird (Amazing Blondel) we approached the bar direct and they were happy to support us.

This time around, when Tia McGraff asked if she could do some work with Julie during her July UK tour we decided to approach them again. The concert room is really nice, the only negative being the lack of disabled access to the room.
