From "A Child's Garden of Grass":

'You may not like dill pickles, but it is after all the only thing you can do with a cucumber.'

A Child's Garden Of Grass

A precious Seventies classic, August 25, 2005
Reviewer:        Jack Jackinowicz
I discovered this book at the library of the Catholic elementary school I went to around 1973. Yep, apparently the nun in charge of buying books was browsing the bestseller list and assumed from the title that it was a childrens' book. Ha haaaaw!! Rick D. and I checked it out in turns and loved it. Of course its content was soon discovered and it was removed from the library (no doubt incinerated), but Rick and I did a joint order (heh heh) to Pocket Books and got each of ourselves a copy. I haven't laid eyes on this title for nearly twenty years, but I can still quote it at length. Like the part that warns you not to get *too* good at rolling joints, because you'll end up sitting in the corner rolling your stupid joints while everyone is going down to the lake for skinny dipping. Or the intro, where the authors say they don't smoke grass and never have, everything in the book is based on what their friend "Ernie Lundquist" told them. Or that nothing is bad when you're stoned, except getting arrested, and even *that's* a learning experience. Or that the results of using a "steamboat" (their term for a big glass waterless bong) would make "even the mighty Zeus shake his head in disbelief." Or referring to the things you will do stoned and not get bored or feel silly, like picking lint off your dog or watching The Flying Nun. I actually think of this book often, after all this time. Highly recommended, even if you've never had a puff in your life (which is, looking back on the effects grass had on my life, my recommendation).

I used to have a pickle lunch box. Not a lunch box with pictures of pickles, a big plastic lunch box shaped like a pickle. It was sweet, no, it was dill. I don't care for sweet pickles, I like big old sour dills. Anyhoo, I really liked it.

Just realised in my 'Farewell Post' above (as I like to refer to it as), that I never actually wished those sticking with the thread good luck. So 'good luck' to all you supporters of this magnificent thread. If only the current bunch of threads were as good as this one the world would be a better place. It still amazes me that it's not topping a thousand by now, but I digress.

Anyway as I said before... you will never hear ...etc, etc.

Farewell and adieu

After having sat here for 20 minutes and read this whole damn thread, i feel compelled to write and add a post to contribute to the stirling effort to reach 85 billion posts, and to say that before today I didn't know that US billions and UK billions were different, so I have not only been entertained, but also informed. Keep up the good work!
Now I really must go and do what I came here to do...

English billions are not different to American ones any more. They used to be a thousand times bigger, when I were a lad. But as scientists never used the term offically (its not in the SI system) and only economists and governments had a common reason to use such big numbers they agreed to standardise on the American system sometime in the 70's I believe.

This is addressed to all who post to this thread hereafter referred to as WAMAM.

THINK! When this thread DOES reach 85 billion posts, the issue of whether you were in the first 10 or the first 100 will be of such unimportance it will be awe-inspiring. Witness the following brethren and brethrenettes:

If you are in the first 10, you will have been in the first tiny bit of a percent. If you were in the first 100, you will be in a percent that is 10 times greater yet so infinitely small that it would make the pyramids seem pyramidial.

I should take the time to explain that WAMAM is "Wankers Anonimus, Male and Female", but I can't spell Anonymis.

Personally I think the first 100 posters will be celebrities when we reach the 85 billion mark. Guest 'WAMAM' has a case of sour grapes me thinks. However I share your difficulty with the spelling of annonymouse

It has been suggested over on the "Will this thread reach 5000 posts?" thread that there be a "mini-duel" between that thread and this one to see which is first to reach 300 posts. However, since the cast of posters to both that thread and this one consist, by and large, of the same bunch of fools, doesn't that make any such competition meaningless, pointless, and absurd since we would be competing against ourselves? Yes, it does! Splendid! Please carry on and may the best thread win.

COMBINE THE THREADS!
Oh, shit. Don't ask me to do that. You couldn't imagine how much work that would be - I have to move messages one at a time to combine threads.
    -Joe Offer-

only if you want to do it correctly, Joe! You could use the lazy-man's merger by just highlighting and copying the whole thread into a post on the other thread. -- clone --

Ah, Shane. Do you know how much you now owe the public library? Yes, yes, I know you don't have a library card, or didn't until a few minutes ago. I know you can't even read. But I'll bet you didn't know that you now have over a two thousand dollars owing to the public library, did you? And you know, in Ontario they send the OPP after deadbeats who owe money to governmental agencies like public libraries.

I'll bet you didn't know that I ran the computers for a public library from over ten years, either.

Say "Hi!" to all your friends in Kingston.

How long would it take to open an 85 billion post thread on computers of today's standard?

We can make a guess. Let's assume a good connection speed of 1Mbyte/s. Let's also assume each post is 0.5Kb, so two posts are 1Kb and 2000 posts are a 1Mybte, or 1 second. 85,000,000,000 posts is therefore a mere 42,500,000 seconds. A day is 86,400 seconds. So my advice is don't try and use a dial-up.
