I trust Old Man River, too, but only to do whatever in H*ll he feels like. The rivers around these parts are nearly all out of their banks. The Rock River in Illinois (you're an old Illinois man Rapaire, remember the Rock River?) floods any time a kid spits in it. There was an interview on TV this AM with a guy whose house is on ten foot poles so it can survive the floods. He said he wouldn't even consider living anywhere else because it is so beautiful living on the river.

Yeah, I remember the Rock River. The Illinois militia cavalry proceeded up the Rock to attack Blackhawk, leaving the militia Infantry and the Regulars behind at Armstrong's Tavern. The horse soldiers camped at Stillman's Run, and Blackhawk and some of his boys started to walk over to say hello. The cav's pickets saw Indians, fired in to the air, yelled, "Injuns!" and the whole bunch ran hell-for-leather back down Stillman's Run, to quiver behind the Infantry and the Regulars.

Blackhawk and his bunch were amused.

The Battle of Stillman's Run wasn't the grandest moment in the history of the Illinois Militia.

(I hasten to point out that one of those Infantry officers was a Lt. Abraham Lincoln.)

This is a true story, oft told in my local The Bull at Ambridge.

A wizened old man was taking his daily walk in the leafy lanes near his home when he hears a small voice calling. See, this chicken came into this library every day and checked out a book. Many time the chicken would come in several times, returning the book just borrowed and checking out another one.

Well, the Librarian thought this was unusual. I mean, we get lots of strange people into libraries, but they usually keep the book at least overnight. So the Librarian followed the chicken the time.

The chicken carried the books ("Crime and Punishment," it was) down the sidewalk and veered off into the woods towards the river. As the chicken approached the river, a big ol' bullfrog jumped ashore.
