Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 24 Jan 08 - 09:51 PM Do I believe there is intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe? Yes, and that it comes around once in a while for a good laugh. Seriously, if extraterrestrial folks are coming a-visiting, why would they let themselves be seen? If they have mastered travel through space-time-other dimensions-what have you, they certainly could operate in a stealth mode. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Jan 08 - 10:40 PM "Why would they let themselves be seen?" For the same reason we let ourselves be seen by chimps and penguins and spiders when we are out doing photography for National Geographic, Rap. They aren't worried about our puny little capabilities to interfere with them! I mean, hell, I saw some ships back in the late 60's that pretty well HAD to be alien craft. I've met quite a number of trustworthy individuals, including professional pilots, who'd have similar experiences to mine...and then some. I've heard testimony from professionals and government people from Jimmy Carter on down about THEIR personal sightings of what they feel must have been alien craft. So the visitors ARE letting themselves be seen...because we CAN'T flippin' DO anything about it anyway, so why should they give 2 hoots whether a few of us see them or not????? (specially when those few are not even believed by the rest....) Plus, Rap, I don't think they're all coming from just one place, and I don't think they are all tied to exactly the same agenda. There may well be some of them who operate in stealth mode, and others who do not, for a simply tremendous variety of possible reasons...and this planet may be just a rather minor stop on their travels. An interesting place to observe now and then. We may think we are the center of the Universe, my friend, but I seriously doubt that anyone ELSE thinks we are. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jan 08 - 09:37 AM I don't think we're much the center of anything except in our own imaginations. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 25 Jan 08 - 01:49 PM Look really close at the video in the link Donuel posted. Check the third UFO from the left. Looks like someone taking a whizz out the door. Could it be Shane? |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 25 Jan 08 - 02:00 PM Rapaire, had you said anything to your brother about your experiences at the cemetery before the same thing happened to him? |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jan 08 - 02:33 PM No, we'd never discussed it before. And in fact he brought the subject up. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 25 Jan 08 - 04:52 PM Spooky. How about Bobok, have you read it? Not one of Dostoevsky's best but germaine to the subject (unless I am completely mis-remembering it, I didn't check). |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 25 Jan 08 - 10:21 PM No. I find Dostoevsky, like Thomas Hardy, could cloud up and rain on the Resurrection. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 28 Jan 08 - 10:57 AM So you wouldn't recommend them for the beach? |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jan 08 - 04:30 PM I'd highly recommend them to anyone who was annoyingly cheerful. "Jude the Obscure," for example, is kept in a special waterproof jacket in libraries because it brings its own raincloud with it. "Crime and Punishment" is only issued in an edition that plays "The Best Of The Captain and Teneille" when it's opened. "The Brothers K." was to include the music to "It's A Small World After All" but even the gummint figgered that was more likely to drive people to suicide than to prevent it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Jan 08 - 04:34 PM LOL! |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 28 Jan 08 - 05:24 PM I read C&P and The Brothers K (Bobok as well) when I was young and nihilistic. Haven't really looked at them since. Good thing I guess, The Cap'n & Tenille would likely drive me over the edge. Pawnbroker women beware. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jan 08 - 05:46 PM And if you think they're depressing in English, you ought to read them in Russian. One of my favorite Russian plays is Gorki's "The Lower Depths" -- especially the part about killing the baby. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 29 Jan 08 - 10:27 AM Infanticide, that's always good for a chuckle. Those crazy Russians. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Little Hawk Date: 29 Jan 08 - 01:41 PM It's the very long, bitterly cold winters and the Vodka. A deadly combination. Guess why it's called "Russian Roulette"!!! Popular Russian T-shirt: "Are we depressed yet?" |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 29 Jan 08 - 09:39 PM Well, the nights are long and cold in Russia (just ask Hitler or Napoleon) and you gotta do something for fun. If you're Catherine the Great or Ivan IV it's no problem, but for the average Russian, well.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 31 Jan 08 - 05:19 PM On a lighter note - The threads about dream cabinets for Obama and Bobert reminded me of a commercial I have seen a couple of times while watching the morning weather on TV. Some local outfit is advertising their kitchen remodeling. One of the things they will do is spray some stuff on the countertop that resembles artificial stone. Then you can have fake fake stone countertops. Is America great or what? |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 31 Jan 08 - 06:42 PM Don't wash your countertops and eventually the same thing will happen. And at considerably less cost. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 01 Feb 08 - 02:02 PM Got stopped by a train again this morning. As I was coming up to the crossing a few miles outside of town I saw it off to the left. It got to the crossing just before I did so I sat and listened (rolled down the window today as the temps were in the low 20's (-5 C)). The train was heading the same direction I was, in the summer I can usually race ahead and beat it to the crossing in the little town up ahead. This train was a long one and going pretty fast. We got a bit of snow last night and the roads are kind of slippery so I had to take it easy. Up the hill on the bend there was a van in the ditch, one wheel was suspended about three feet off the ground. At the turn there was a car with a crumpled fender in the ditch. As I came over the hill in the next town I saw the engines going by below. I sat and watched the train go by again. Good thing I like trains. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Little Hawk Date: 01 Feb 08 - 02:21 PM There's a place near here where the train track makes a huge "S" bend over a 3 mile stretch of highway. You can get stopped 3 times by the same friggin' train on that road!!! And I have been. |

Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: topical tom Date: 02 Feb 08 - 10:19 AM What's a train? None pass through our town any more.Plenty of trucks do, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: KB in Iowa Date: 02 Feb 08 - 11:03 AM The Cane on the Brazos. I sense a song there. Anyone? What used to be the Rock Island line still passes through here east-west. There was north-south line here, too. Those tracks were torn up years ago and now the right of way is a nature trail, except for the part just north of town where the owner plants corn there. The corn in the right of way is always stunted and looks awful, it would be nice if he would let it be part of the trail. The trail picks up again farther north and passes through West Branch, birthplace of Herbert Hoover. |

Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 02 Feb 08 - 07:58 PM Lots of trains pass through here. It's a major yard for the Union Pacific. It is also a major trans-shipment point for intergalactic freight. |

Subject: RE: BS: Will this thread reach 85 billion posts? From: Rapparee Date: 03 Feb 08 - 09:12 AM I have heard, from my usual sources, that Don McBride was released on bail.
