Rattling a collection tin is certainly illegal - and that goes for buckets too. All that is allowed is to stand quietly, looking meek and deserving. You can be arrested for any display of enthusiasm for a cause. After all, this is England, Land of the Free. Heaven knows what happens nowadays to people who try to take out a library book using the wrong ticket. Never seen again I guess.

Heaven knows what happens to people who try to just take out a library book, full stop. Books? Deeply dangerous things books, confiscate them all.

As for enthusiasm, well, you can be hanged, drawn and quatered for showing a mere ounce of that in the folk world, let's face it!

Bollocks, most of what happens in the folk world is driven by nothing but enthusiasm and love for the music.

Quatered? As in Quatermass and the Pit? (You have to be of a certain age to know about this - I was too young, but tried to watch it between the banisters when no-one was looking!)
I thought Rattling was for snakes, bogs, Roaring Robin, gold jewellery, etc.

As you can see from the newspaper article in the connection above, the folk festival is short of stewards and they need all the help they can get. I have checked back with my friend and he has confirmed this. He also said the person saying they have enough already is probably mischief making, though why they would want to do that is beyond me.

Latest internet newsletter states STEWARDS STILL WANTED (large RED letters too) but who knows what the truth is?

Following the article in last week's local paper, the organisers have been innundated with offers of local accommodation for artistes - maybe the mention of £35 per night (above the going rate for B&B) had something to do with it?

Finally, what a disappointment that the Sidholme hotel music room is not included as a venue for the social dancing - the venues in the working programme are now the same as last year, including the dreary youth centre at Manstone. All three venues are therefore a long way out of town - once again giving the feeling of 'two festivals' that was a prominent criticism of last year.

Here is the text from an email of about a week ago as sent by one of the senior organisers. Interpret it as you will!! I only offered to help before the festival so maybe the need is for more stewards during the festival. But what sort of stewards???

Hi Stephen

Because of changes to the law and new codes of practice on venue security we're going to have to have different sorts of stewards this year.

We've be in touch with most applicants now and anyone left will hear from us very soon.

Thanks for your offer. I hope we've got everything covered now, but if not I know who to ask!

The sidholme was originally going to be part of the festival but the 'trustees' of the hotel decided not to move forwards due to probably licensing problems. The working programme will flag up 2 new evening concert venues for people .... please read before slagging off!

I shall also be at Sidmouth (for the first few days at least).

John Barden tells me that the singarounds in the Bedford are excellent so I shall no doubt end up there, although I have to admit to being a little wary of singing inside a lorry!

If it was a lorry it would now be called 'The Vauxhaul'. You don't need a premises licence with permission for music on a moving lorry mind you. Still - hope you like late nights Kevin, Bedford sessions are like that.

Countess Dick!

I am digusted by this comment from "GUEST,Guest". If anyone does know who this is I suggest they give this person a good talking to there is no need to be so agressive on a thread about a folk festival. All the back and forth arguments further up this therad are unnecessary and if people want to swear at other please be vaguely polite and use *****. It is not pleasant!

Now I've had my moan.............

I will unfortunately not be able to attend the whole thing this year although wild horses wouldn't stop me from making it for the singing in the sea on Thursday with Teddy in tow.

I look forward to seeing you all there. (apart from GUEST,Guest)

Love to all

George

Arriving in Sidmouth on Thursday afternoon, and camping on the main field at Kingsdown Tail.

I usually get into the Bedford for an impromptu session on Thursday evening. Colin, the landlord, is quite keen on having a little get together as a rule.

So if anyone wants to join in, do come along.

I'll be there on Friday too, from 11am, meeting and greeting.

Not long now.

There are some changes to the programme (all positive, as far as I can tell). Now I have a Sunday concert (sharing bill with Devil's Interval, great!), and the Saturday "Teatime with..." is moved to Monday, plus 1 hour with Lester Simpson and the Songwriters' concert on Monday. But I'll be there from Saturday, and sticking my nose wherever I can. Also, checking the programme for the three days I'll be there, it looks like I'll be running like a headless chicken from venue to venue trying to catch so many wonderful acts.

I am a Sidmouth virgin, and particularly glad to hear it isn't as hilly as Whitby (not many places are, I guess).

What's the water like, Lizzie? Sandy underfoot, rocky or pebbly? Shall I bring my trunks and raise the sea level, or will I come out full of sea urchins and seaweed?

I clocked your spots in my prog and will probably look in to the War memeorial Club for a Tea with.

Plenty of places you will enjoy. Look in to the Theatre Bar for Kittys session. And you will have heard of the Middle Bar and maybe the New Tavern (Newt).

The Swan (garden)and/or The Dove between sessions in the afternoons.

You will be spoilt for choice.

Ooh George....I'm just off to phone the Sidmouth Herald....we don't have many virgins in Siddy these days...Government Policy I'm afraid! ;0)

OK...We've pebbles George, sorry...unless it's low tide, in which case there quite a bit of sand on the main beach, mostly inbetweenn the Rock Islands (someone cue Lonnie)and the waves come in at right angles to each other...and they literally do a Mexican Wave..love that bit......or far more sand at low tide, up at Jacob's Ladder beach around the corner...

We've no sea urchines, but there was a weaver fish or two apparently reported the other day, so bring your slippers....and we have mermaids! Up in the Clock Tower Restaurant, which has the biggest cream cakes in the world! You can work off the calories by climbing Jacob's Ladder to get up there George, no worries ;0)

All the town is in the flat part.

The water's freezing George....I think the polar caps are melting this way! If you see a man with a yellow lilo, singing "We're bound for South Australia" walking nonchalantly down the road, being followed by loads of other Yellow Robed Recruits....don't panic...it's all perfectly normal in Siddy! ;0)

Oh...and watch out for that Jim Causley! ;0)

And Dave....The Lighthouse Song....I loved that one too...you sang that with such passion, can I put in a request for that one as well...

Don't mention the passion word though...Mackenzie's after me for being too noisy this morning! Shhhhhh! Don't tell him I was here....you know nothing! ;0)

Great Dave...I'll look forward to that....and do you Middle Bar Singers ever record your song sessions, because you should you know. Oh yes! George singing as well....book me a seat! This could leave The Ham empty the rate we're going! ;0)

The beach is naturally pretty pebbly, but there's some sandy beach. I think that's probably sand trucked in by the council from time to time. The same goes for many of the rocks people clamber on.
...........................

It's a great festival though. And this year with the season tickets back it'll be more the way it shouod be. I'll still miss the foreign dance sides though. I hope that in time that side of the festival will come back - perhaps with a different basis, relying more on the communities with different traditions from all over the world who are living in this country, rather than just on visiting groups from abroad.

Only a week to go.

George P - I'd be surprised if you didn't get a new song out of Sidmouth, red cliffs, shingle and all. (The beach is part of the Jurassic Coast.)

The first person I heard sing "Light from the Lighthouse" was Maglan, in the Theatre Bar. I've heard she's over from St Helena on a visit, so hope to see/hear her in the Theatre Bar this year.

I'm all in favour of recycling, but not when guests post tired messages from last year. If I've understood correctly, the licences for the marquees are issued when they're put up, and have been checked in situ.

The Sidmouth Herald will have been published yesterday, so can a local tell us what this week's big story is (Lizzie)?

Mc Grath - when you say "perhaps with a different basis, relying more on the communities with different traditions from all over the world who are living in this country" - I take it you remember the Polish dancers from Southampton, the Irish dancers from Yetminster, the Russian (Orlyk) dancers from Manchester, and the Punjabi dancers from Wolverhampton?
