Just a quick note of praise for one of the most worthwhile yet less well known of the summer music festivals.
Bob Webb and I took part in Calico Jack's Music Festival at Comberbach, near Northwich, Cheshire last weekend (24th-25th)and a splendid time was had by all.
The whole thing was staged in aid of the British Heart Foundation and everyone sang/played/performed for nothing. It's always a hugely enjoyable event and this year was no exception.
My partner Lynne and I were there for the whole of Saturday and saw some incredible entertainment.
Everything on offer was of the highest quality, but here are just a few highlights:
Murphy's Marbles - an Irish band, and several cuts above the rest, with some sensational lead guitar playing.
Breeze and Wilson - master musicicans, of course, and on fine form despite having to travel from an arts festival in Derbyshire where they'd been playing all day.
Gary and Vera Aspey - I have to confess I'd forgotten just how good Gary and Vera really are. Gary compered everything in his own inimitable style (as he has most of these festivals since they started) and, in the evening, joined with his wife Vera in a barn-storming appearance which had us all, to coin a phrase, 'rolling in the aisles'.
Baker's Fabulous Boys - were, well, fabulous as always.
And, of course, Calico Jack. Consummate professionals, fine musicians and the people who made it all happen.
The Calico Jack festival is just like folk festivals used to be - no egos, no hype, no pretensions, just people coming together to have a good time and make some money for a good cause in the process.
Long may it continue.

Mr H,

Yes there will, after a year out in 2007. Bob Webb and I were invited to appear, but Bob has a prior engagement, which is a shame. As you'll have gathered from the above, we thoroughly enjoyed 2006.

This year's Festival is over the weekend of June 27th - 29th in (I presume)Comberbach.
