Subject: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jun 06 - 07:58 AM What pictures come to mind when you see people's Mudcat name. The "Name the Mudcatter" thread shows that these vary. E.g. I am a Hobbit fan but didn't know that Freda Underhill came from down-under, so my picture was the one she intended. But someone said that KT refered to his/her initials (- Kevin Turner, or Karen Taylor maybe)whereas I would have guessed Katy Smith maybe. So 2 to get you started, my name and my daughter's (Cally Hanna). |

Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jun 06 - 08:37 AM A cow and a kangaroo just joined the game |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Paul Burke Date: 28 Jun 06 - 08:46 AM The only thing I associate with your name is "one man went to Mo", which conjures up some slightly unfortunate images. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: John O'L Date: 28 Jun 06 - 08:50 AM 'Skipy', (with one p) is actually pronounced 'sky-pee', and is therefore nothing to do with a kangaroo. Picture that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jun 06 - 08:52 AM BTW Skipy, was it the moohing cow that fell down the well, or did you have something different in mind |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jun 06 - 08:57 AM Ouch Paul, I don't like that idea at all. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Azizi Date: 28 Jun 06 - 09:05 AM "Mo the caller" Images change. When I saw your name, I originally thought of the children's rhyme Eenie, meenie, minie mo catch a Tiger by his toe... But now I see a picture of a square dance and a woman dressed in Scottish pleated plaid dress calling out the moves that the dancers make. This is a mix of Americana and Scottish-cana. At least I think I read somewhere that you're Scottish. Am I right about that? **** Cally Hanna- I'm not sure-maybe it's the second name-but when I first read your daughter's name I saw a picture of a farm woman [you?] standing outside her porch and interrupting her daughter's solitary play by calling her "Hannah! Time for dinner!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jun 06 - 09:23 AM I'm English, but quite often when I tell people that we enjoy Folk Dancing people often assume we go Scottish dancing, then it's "Oh, you mean Morris Dancing". English Country Dancing seems to be a minority interest. When I'm calling for beginners I wear a flashy embroidered waistcoat with pansies on and call dances from all over the place; England, Ireland, Scotland, France, America. And dances dating from 1651 to ones I've made up on the spot. And the dancers find variations that I'd never imagined. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Snuffy Date: 28 Jun 06 - 09:27 AM But does Cally rhyme with "Sally" or "sorely"? Two different pictures. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: freda underhill Date: 28 Jun 06 - 10:03 AM Mo the caller I've always imagined you with a bald head and moustache, jeans, a waistcoat (not a flowery one) & check shirt - because thats what people who call dances in Oz look like! ps - not enough catters put there photos up on the website - it really helps to put a face to a name!! freda |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jun 06 - 10:30 AM Well! Not jean, a skirt usually as the picture on http://homepages.which.net/~katriona.moulton/index.html shows. I'll have to think about growing the moustache if you think it would help. I've tried to put a profile up once or twice, without success. Cally rhymes with Sally |

Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Paul Burke Date: 29 Jun 06 - 03:58 AM "Rapaire" makes me think of something that's been fixed badly- Badly Fixed Boy? Clinton Hammond is a former president playing on his organ. Alba reminds me of those radiogram cabinets of the 60s (it was a popular UK make). Dave the Gnome is obviously tall, young and clean- shaven. El Greco is clearly a chip-shop owner, I can see his greasy apron. salt and vinegar, please. Liz the Squeak is a big plate of mashed potato and cabbage. Cally Hanna I can't separate from Caller Herrin', which presumably tell the other fish when to make a basket- the keech in the creel? Emma B is a smiling, round, stripy bumble-bee. And for some reason Sorcha reminds me of Torchy the Battery Boy. Sorry, you DID ask for the images, I can't help my warped mind. |

Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: GUEST,Mingulay at work Date: 29 Jun 06 - 06:12 AM Azizi - the gentle hum of insects in a garden on a hot summers day, bright sunshine through green, flag bedecked trees dappling the grass, ice gently clinking in a glass of Pimms. Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Mo the caller Date: 29 Jun 06 - 06:39 AM Sorry if I repeated a thread that had been done not so long ago. It was that 8 year olds fault "she started it" with her game. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Azizi Date: 29 Jun 06 - 07:46 AM Come to think of it, that "8 year old" was hoping that when that magical name was mentioned, it would evoke an image of a great & mighty [and yes, also a beautiful] Ruleress. |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: Azizi Date: 29 Jun 06 - 07:52 AM Not to mention that that wonderful name also evokes images of bumblebees or even worse, mosquitos. [though Mingulay, I like your use of words, especially the "bright sunshine through green, flag bedecked trees dappling the grass, ice gently clinking in a glass of Pimms". But excuse me, what is Pimms?] |
Subject: RE: BS: Pictures from Mudcat names From: manitas_at_work Date: 29 Jun 06 - 08:13 AM Pimms is a company that produces alcoholic cordial drinks known as Fruit Cup No 1, N0 2 etc. I think there were orginally six but now there's only 2. It's become inextricable linked in the English imagination with summer, the Wimbledon tennis championships, The Royal Ascot races and the Henley Regatta. I's traditionally served with an excess of fruit and salad stuff inn the glass. See http://www.viewlondon.co.uk/pimms-no-1-cup_index.html |

" The girl's name Aziza is pronounced ah-ZEE-zah. It is of Arabic, Swahili and Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "beloved; precious; mighty." Hebrew Aziza has 2 variant forms: Azize and Azizi. |
