NOTES
" Taken down by Baring Gould from John Martyn, shoemaker of Milton Abbot who learnt it from his wife's uncle, who died in 1868 and was a ringer at St Kew. `Song could be traced back to 1810. (Canow Kernow, Soundpost Publications, 1966 (see Bibliography)

From monuments in Egloshayle it can be seen that the men mentioned in the song all died between 1821 and 1846.

In the 1960s, on one occasion five distinct versions from five different villages in the area were sung during a late night lock-in in The Swan, Wadebridge.
