Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away... From: GUEST,Guest Date: 09 Jul 06 - 12:15 PM This is really heartbreaking news - Michael was an incredible inspiration to so many people. He seemed to be a very modest man, who would prefer to hide behind other people's glories. What a sad time for the O'Domhnaill girls. |
Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away... From: Effsee Date: 09 Jul 06 - 12:25 PM A very sad loss to us all. Here's some info from another site: Micheál O'Domhnaill's first group was 'Skara Brae', a singing group with his sisters Tríona and Maighread and Derryman Dáithí Sproule. Then followed a stint with Mick Hanly in a duo 'Monroe'. In 1975 he was a founder member of one of the most influential Irish traditional bands 'The Bothy Band'. In the four years the band was together they toured extensively and recorded several highly acclaimed albums and although the Bothy band broke up in 1979 their legacy still lives on in the young traditional bands coming out of Ireland today. After the demise of The Bothy Band Micheál moved to America where he played with many musicians including fiddle player Kevin Burke, also of the Bothy Band. Later with his sister Tríona and flute player Brian Dunning he formed 'Nightnoise' which gained widespread recognition and acclaim throughout The United States and Europe. |

From: GUEST,Pamela in Ithaca Date: 09 Jul 06 - 09:58 PM Micheal was one of my idols when I was getting into celtic music so many years ago - I *loved* Relativity and Nightnoise... not to mention the work with his sisters. He was one of the best for playing back up for jigs. This is very sad. Are there any more details about what happened? 54 is far too young (and not so much older than I am than I thought when I looked up to him back when) |

Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away... From: GUEST,Nyah Date: 11 Jul 06 - 05:20 AM Seems Michael died of a heart attack, like his father and his brother Eamonn - such a tragedy - such a loss for his family, the girls, Skara Brae, and of course Paddy Glackin who was his closest friend. Details of funeral in English and Irish - for those in Dublin - Ó DOMHNAILL (Mícheál) (Dublin) (suddenly) Deeply regretted by his sorrowing sisters and brother, Tríona, Maighread and Conall, by his nephew and nieces, brother and sisters-in-law, extended family and many friends. He will be waked in his sister Maighread's home on Tuesday, July 11 and his remains will be taken to the Church of the Holy Cross, Dundrum, for requiem Mass on Wednesday, July 12 at 12 Noon. Burial will follow in St Colmcille's Cemetery, Naas, Kells, Co. Meath Ó DOMHNAILL (Mícheál) (Baile Átha Cliath) Gan choinne. Méala mór a bhás dá dheirfiúracha Tríona agus Maighread, dá dheartháír Conall, dá nia agus dá neachtanna, dá chleamhnaithe, dá chuid daoine muinteartha ar fad agus dá chairde líonmhara. Dhéanfar á fhaire i dteach a dheirféar Maighread Dé Máirt 11 Iúil agus aistreofar a chorp maidin Dé Céadaoin chuig Séipéal na Croise Naofa, Dún Droma le haghaidh Aifreann na marbh ag 12 Noon iarnóin. Cuirfear ina dhiadh sin é i Reilg Cholm Cille, Ceannanas, Contae na Mí. Tá do dheirfiúracha cráite dé ghnáth is iad ag sileadh na súl Is gan fhios cén lá go bráth a n-imeoidh a gcumha D'fhág tú d'aicme faoi smál is is náir liom mar a rinne tú an siúl Nuair nár agair tú Párrthas le spás beag eile a thabhairt dúinn. |

Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away... From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 11 Jul 06 - 07:09 AM I was very shocked and saddened to hear this news. All the time I have been accompanying Irish traditional music on the guitar (to the best of my limited ability) it has always been Micheal O Domhnaill who was my greatest inspiration. I have always loved his playing for the seemingly instinctive understanding of the harmonies implied in what is, for me, a predominantly melodic musical form. Unlike a lot of guitarists I could mention who have come along since, he never budgeoned the music into submission but rather gave the music space to shine through while adding another dimension to it that unison playing or strict rhythmic accompaniment could not do on its own. He understood, like a great jazz musician, that it was not just the notes or chords that mattered but also the spaces in between. A great musician and a great accompanist, his playing was for me distinguished not just by the tunings he used but by his right-hand technique which often tended to play a rhythmic pattern that followed slightly behind the melody line (listen to his accompaniments on the 'Portland' album with Kevin Burke, for instance) and gave a whole new colour to the music without ever diluting or compromising its character. HIs lightness of touch, as well, meant that he was equally at home accompanying or arranging slow airs and ballads as dance tunes and he could adapt his technique to many styles and musical traditions. His influence went far beyond Irish circles and I doubt that any of the guitarists who have come along in the last few years will ever have such an impact. My deepest sympathies to his friends and family. Chris |

Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away... From: Declan Date: 11 Jul 06 - 12:28 PM I got a chance to have a chat with Micheal a few years ago in Ennis when he did a concert with Paddy Glackin a couple of years back. Himself and Paddy made a record called Ath Chuairt around that time. Micheal was one of the people who convinced me that there was indeed a role for the guitar in traditional music and had a huge influence on my playing style. I was glad I had a chance to thank him for that. As was said above he was a very modest man and was much more interested in talking about guitars and things in general than listening to me waffling on about how great he was. We heard this news in Miltown Malbay on Sunday and we played some of his music and remembered him. Deepest sympathy goes to Mairead & Triona and other family members who have had more than their fair share of bereavements in recent years. |
Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away... From: lamarca Date: 11 Jul 06 - 07:22 PM This is sad news - 54 is far too young. I'll have to dig out my "Celtic Folkweave" LP (Micheal and Mick Hanly) and play it for the first time in years. Relativity was a great group - siblings Micheal and Triona O'Domhnaill paired with siblings Phil and Johnny Cunningham. The kind of instinctive harmony and fire that happens when siblings make music together! |

Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away... From: GUEST,Bothy Man Date: 02 Oct 06 - 02:25 PM Two points. 1) His name was Mícheál Ó Domhnaill. 2) He didn't die of a heart attack, but as a result of falling downstairs. And while we're on the subject of errors, the man's name is Robbie Hannan (not 'Hannen') and the album Mícheál made with Paddy Glackin was called 'Athchuairt', not two words as suggested by an earlier poster. Sorry, and I know Mícheál would agree with me (since his name was misspelt so often), but I get very fed up with illiterate posters to this site. Sure, Irish names can be difficult, but at least make the effort to spell them correctly! Slán, Dónal |

Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away...(July 2006) From: GUEST,Albannach Date: 04 Jan 07 - 01:07 PM Watch your step after a night on the town: the majority of people who die after falling down the stairs have been hitting the booze. Roman Bux of the Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, analysed 43 fatal falls in the city in order to help insurance companies better understand the underlying causes - they will not pay out on life policies where death was self-induced through intoxication. Of the fatalities, 23 people had been drinking heavily and 19 had pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease. "We have shown a fatal fall down stairs without an underlying severe disease or alcohol influence is a rare phenomenon," Bux says (Forensic Science International, DOI: 10.1016/j.forsciint.2006.10.010). I am also guilty of mispelling the name of Micheál's last album by inseting an extra space. Given the nature of the gereral affection being poured out on this thread your earlier post seems a bit pedantic. I agree about he spelling of the name, but you might make some allowances for some of the rest of us who althoough apperently "illiterate" really cared about Micheál'a (and your) music. |

Subject: RE: Micheal O'Domhnaill has passed away...(July 2006) From: GUEST,Orla Uí Dhomhnaill Date: 04 Apr 07 - 08:28 PM Mícheál's family has been really overwhelmed by the amount of respect, sympathy and tributes to him since he passed away. He is terribly missed but has left a huge musical legacy. To celebrate this, Maighread, Tríona & Conall (Mícheál's siblings), Cathal Goan (Maighread's husband), and Mícheál's closest friend, Paddy Glackin, are organising a tribute concert with the help of Tom Sherlock, (their joint manager), on May 24th in Vicker's St., Dublin. Coupled with that, there will be a CD released with tracks featuring Mícheál, which should be very special. Please visit the newly established (and ever-expanding) website on which I will be working over the next few months. It will provide details of the concert and CD. Still trying to deal with the increasing amount of material coming in and trying to get it uploaded.
