Here's some info from another site: Micheál O'Domhnaill's first group was 'Skara Brae', a singing group with his sisters Tríona and Maighread and Derryman Dáithí Sproule. Then followed a stint with Mick Hanly in a duo 'Monroe'. In 1975 he was a founder member of one of the most influential Irish traditional bands 'The Bothy Band'. In the four years the band was together they toured extensively and recorded several highly acclaimed albums and although the Bothy band broke up in 1979 their legacy still lives on in the young traditional bands coming out of Ireland today. After the demise of The Bothy Band Micheál moved to America where he played with many musicians including fiddle player Kevin Burke, also of the Bothy Band. Later with his sister Tríona and flute player Brian Dunning he formed 'Nightnoise' which gained widespread recognition and acclaim throughout The United States and Europe. |

They were thrilling and exciting people they never knew in places they never heard of. |

All the time I have been accompanying Irish traditional music on the guitar (to the best of my limited ability) it has always been Micheal O Domhnaill who was my greatest inspiration. I have always loved his playing for the seemingly instinctive understanding of the harmonies implied in what is, for me, a predominantly melodic musical form. Unlike a lot of guitarists I could mention who have come along since, he never budgeoned the music into submission but rather gave the music space to shine through while adding another dimension to it that unison playing or strict rhythmic accompaniment could not do on its own. He understood, like a great jazz musician, that it was not just the notes or chords that mattered but also the spaces in between. A great musician and a great accompanist, his playing was for me distinguished not just by the tunings he used but by his right-hand technique which often tended to play a rhythmic pattern that followed slightly behind the melody line (listen to his accompaniments on the 'Portland' album with Kevin Burke, for instance) and gave a whole new colour to the music without ever diluting or compromising its character. HIs lightness of touch, as well, meant that he was equally at home accompanying or arranging slow airs and ballads as dance tunes and he could adapt his technique to many styles and musical traditions. His influence went far beyond Irish circles and I doubt that any of the guitarists who have come along in the last few years will ever have such an impact. From: Declan Date: 11 Jul 06 - 12:28 PM I got a chance to have a chat with Micheal a few years ago in Ennis when he did a concert with Paddy Glackin a couple of years back. Himself and Paddy made a record called Ath Chuairt around that time. Micheal was one of the people who convinced me that there was indeed a role for the guitar in traditional music and had a huge influence on my playing style. I was glad I had a chance to thank him for that. As was said above he was a very modest man and was much more interested in talking about guitars and things in general than listening to me waffling on about how great he was. We heard this news in Miltown Malbay on Sunday and we played some of his music and remembered him. Deepest sympathy goes to Mairead & Triona and other family members who have had more than their fair share of bereavements in recent years. |

I am also guilty of mispelling the name of Micheál's last album by inseting an extra space. Given the nature of the gereral affection being poured out on this thread your earlier post seems a bit pedantic. I agree about he spelling of the name, but you might make some allowances for some of the rest of us who althoough apperently "illiterate" really cared about Micheál'a (and your) music. |

I followed his career alongside all those other super talents who played contemporary irish music got to meet him with paddy glackin in rostreavor co. down few years ago he kindly sang a song i requested "the death of queen jane" it transported me to the care free days of my youth in mid 70s this was a hammer blow. to all who knew him. i send my deepest sympathy to his sisters and all his family |

He is terribly missed but has left a huge musical legacy. To celebrate this, Maighread, Tríona & Conall (Mícheál's siblings), Cathal Goan (Maighread's husband), and Mícheál's closest friend, Paddy Glackin, are organising a tribute concert with the help of Tom Sherlock, (their joint manager), on May 24th in Vicker's St., Dublin. Coupled with that, there will be a CD released with tracks featuring Mícheál, which should be very special. The man was a genius of his time , and I am much saddened by his passing, but at least I have a wonderful recording of that very special night. His singing of "The bonny Banks of Loch Lomond " brought a tear to my eye! This may be of interest to the family and I would gladly provide a copy if so required. |
