Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: HipflaskAndy Date: 11 Jul 06 - 05:00 AM Oh - that one got there! The fiddle tune was by Dougie Maclean I believe. FAB Scots songsmith and singer - but a dab hand instrumentally too. Used to play a mean fiddle but rarely does now - pity! Google him - I'm sure that piece is on one of his CDs - all info will be there. Cheers! - Duncan McFarlane |
Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: HipflaskAndy Date: 11 Jul 06 - 05:08 AM http://www.dougiemaclean.com/ is the official site But elsewhere I found ..... ..... he developed his Celtic musical roots as a member of Scotland's leading Celtic bands, the Tannahill Weavers and Silly Wizard - long since gone 'solo' .....Dougie was also responsible for the movie soundtrack song 'The Gael' which was used by 20th Century Fox as background music for their film The Last of the Mohicans Cheers - Duncan |

Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: GUEST,TIA Date: 11 Jul 06 - 09:14 AM BTW, thanks for your help HipflaskAndy. I'm a Dougie fan, and thought it might be his work (given his contribution of The Gael to the film), but I hadn't found this particular tune. What I'd really like to find is the traditional tune it's based on (if any). |

Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: GUEST,kenny Date: 12 Jul 06 - 12:52 PM Tia – I found this link on the "Chiff & Fipple" website, which should help [ if I can get the link to work ] : http://www.mohicanpress.com/mo11100.html |
Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: GUEST,kenny Date: 12 Jul 06 - 12:59 PM Seems to work OK. Dougie was a friend of mine at school. He used to have the gold disc for the music on display when he owned the "Taybank" hotel in Dunkeld. I'd always thought that "The Gael" was taken from his "Search" recording, which was instrumental music for an exhibition about the Loch Ness Monster, and that it was Dougie himself playing the piece. I see that one of Phil Cunningham's tunes, "The House In Rose Valley" also appeared in the film. Was that played on fiddle? If it was , then that was most likely Alistair Fraser. I also knew Alistair from when he was working in Aberdeen , before he was a full-time fiddler. He's back here in 2 weeks time for the NAFCO fiddle festival. I'll ask him when I see him. |

Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: Matt_R Date: 17 Jul 06 - 01:29 PM Dougie is one of my favorite artists EVER. I just picked up his new album. |
Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: GUEST,TIA Date: 17 Jul 06 - 02:26 PM Dougie's "Feel So Near" is perhaps one of the greatest songs of all time(IMO). |
Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: Matt_R Date: 17 Jul 06 - 04:25 PM When my girlfriend and I get married, we're having "Caledonia" played. It's the song I hooked her with. Heh heh. |
Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: GUEST Date: 17 Jul 06 - 09:47 PM Meebs...you're getting married! Congratulations! I guess you're not a virgin anymore, eh? Whats her name? Is she cute? Does she have a job? Does she play msuic or sing? love, harpgirl |
Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: Matt_R Date: 18 Jul 06 - 01:57 AM Well, not married as in engaged, but we're planning on it and hopefully there will be an engagement next year. Nope, not a virgin (for at least 4 years now) but that's got nothing to do with my girl now. Her name's Misty, and she's my Tennessee mountain angel, and I love her ... and yes, she's adorable. She doesn't play an instrument but she sings regularly at her church and sang in chorus and madrigals in high school. But yeah, "Caledonia" is our song. We always sing it whenever we're together. |

Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: Vixen Date: 15 Oct 08 - 12:07 PM Presto Abracadabra Threadisimus Revivify Ok, I've found this tune variously attributed to McLean (as The Gael) and Clannad (as "I Will Find You"); one person said it's called "The Kiss" and another told us it's the "Elk Hunt" song. Just about everyone else calls it "the song from the last of the mohicans movie". Can anyone say if it's composed or traditional??? And what it's really called? (if it's one of those Kesh/Kerrigan deals, that's fine too!) Reynaud and I learned it at the request of a cast member at the CT Ren Faire, and it's been incredibly popular. Thanks in Advance, V PS, I agree about Dougie McLean--amazing talent. |
Subject: RE: last of the mohicans fiddle tune From: GUEST,kenny Date: 15 Oct 08 - 01:11 PM Which tune are you referring to ? The jig usually referred to as "The Gael" was composed by Dougie McLean, as stated above. |
