Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: woodsie Date: 14 Jul 06 - 02:44 PM Does anybody know how Derek Brimstone is? The lat couple of engagements at The Orpington Folk Club were cancelled at short notice due to health problems. I hope the old geezer is alright! Nice website - could do with a bit more stuff from the sixties/seventies. |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Big Al Whittle Date: 14 Jul 06 - 03:15 PM yeh talked to him last night on the phone. he wants to keep his hand in (as the gynaecologist said, etc...) doing a gig a month or so. but he's been in hospital a couple of times since I saw him last(must be six months ago). And he's waiting for a machine to help him from the NHS. he find the travelling hard going - the drive home etc. there is another album planned and he hopes to keep going via his website. Anyway, now you've got his contact details from the site, you'll all be able to keep in touch and wish him well. I know he would like to hear from all his fans, because I get the impression, its been a tough wicket - healthwise. he was telling me now that he doesn't feel up to all the really strenuous gigging schedules, he would like to find another creative outlet. del was probably my biggest single influence - through trying to be like him, I found out about what I was capable of myself, as an artist. I know he has been an influence and inspiration to lots of us. He is upset about any gigs he has had to cancel. I am sure you will all realise Derek is very professional in his attitude, and would only let a venue down with the greatest reluctance. best wishes to all al |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: woodsie Date: 14 Jul 06 - 03:39 PM Thanks for that - I've only seen him a couple of times. He is a great performer, I don't know how I missed him in the late sixties early seventies. Still better late than never! |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Lanfranc Date: 14 Jul 06 - 05:33 PM Nice one wld. I've known Del since ever and I'm glad to say I was instrumental in rescuing the text of the first part of his autobiography from an old word processor. He and Jeannie are great-grandparents, if not great-great-grandparents and need to look after themselves. I might be tempted to offer my services as roadie again - haven't done that since 1971 or thereabouts. I'll certainly offer him a lift to the Alex Atterson Memorial Weekend in October. Can you have a folksinger listed, as in Grade I? If you could, Del would be a candidate. After all "There's no-one as old as Derek Brimstone!" Alan |

Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Jul 06 - 09:48 PM I went to check him out (never heard of him but if some one comes up here with a few good words I look) but couldn't find a site (used the link above). Is it still up & running? Barry |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: GUEST Date: 16 Jul 06 - 03:33 AM What songs did he write? |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: George Papavgeris Date: 16 Jul 06 - 04:26 AM Very few, I think, GUEST. He is mostly known as a performer, interpreter of songs, instrumentalist and raconteur. |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: folkwaller Date: 16 Jul 06 - 05:41 AM He is very very funny |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: breezy Date: 16 Jul 06 - 07:13 AM Vin Garbutt was his prodigy he did write too, and very east Endish His joke telling is an art form You can be listening to his song then recall the joke and collapse on the floor he is the salt of the earth Noone cannot know of him on the U K scene, he is a legend. he was a role model for many budding performers during the early 70s His book reads as he speaks, with that charming cockey accent. his interpretation of jeremy taylor's 'Peessooff' is probably still a gem Recently heard to perform Les Barker's 'Will The Turtle be Unbroken' plays a lovely Tacoma guitar one of the best exponents of frayling banjo style too Worth having just one lesson , you'll be in tears Should be a tourist attraction Any Americans should book a visit. Only £25 an hour, but what an hour. tell him 'breezy sends you' The only good thing in Hemel hempstead before and after the Buncefield Oil terminal explosion |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Murray MacLeod Date: 16 Jul 06 - 08:56 AM breezy, he plays a lovely Tama guitar, rather than a lovely Tacoma guitar ... |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: breezy Date: 16 Jul 06 - 08:57 PM yes you are correct I was wrong but it does start with a Ta and ends ma so its an easy mistake to make. for me unlike georgeie Bushey I can admit 'I made a mistake.' and say 'sorry' thats why I could never be a politician I just had an e-mail from him derek B he sounds O K , still off the fags, but concerned about putting on weight Think is body is absorbing his intake better than it did before so he shoulld maybe cutdown on his calorific intake that'll save him even more money I booked him for my club 19th Nov, come and support and have a laff |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Bugsy Date: 17 Jul 06 - 05:02 AM He used to have a beautiful Daion Guitar with an inlaid mother of pearl eagle on the back. That was many years ago though. I think he swapped his old Gibson for it. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Bugsy Date: 17 Jul 06 - 06:05 AM In fact, it's the guitar he is playing in the photo on the "Biography page" on the new website. I remember the inlay design on the fingerboard, and you can just make out the "horn" emblem that Daion carved into the headstock. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: GUEST,Lanfranc the Cookieless Date: 17 Jul 06 - 06:24 AM I'm pretty sure that the guitar is not a Daion but a Tama that was made to celebrate the US BiCentennial (1976) with the great seal of the US inlaid in the back and tree of life on the fingerboard and headstock. It could be that it is a part of the tree of life on the headstock that is being confused with the Daion logo. If I remember rightly, Del acquired it in the late 70s and exchanged his Gibson (J50?) for it. Alan |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: breezy Date: 17 Jul 06 - 04:47 PM Hi Alan , havent seen you for a while Please keep track on Windward, thought you might have made it for harvey see what you can do for next season especially Derek yeah ? |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Bugsy Date: 18 Jul 06 - 02:17 AM I must be having a senior moment. When Del was over in Aus. in 84? I had a Kasuga guitar. Del said that his was a Kasuga too. I had a Daion before that. Bugger me, I must be losing it. I think it's a KASUGA. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: GUEST,Bryan Bruce Date: 18 Jul 06 - 01:57 PM I once had a guitar! |

Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: GUEST,Brimmo Date: 04 Aug 06 - 08:23 PM Hello all. My guitar is a KASUGA CONRAD, and an exhibition model at that.It is very rare. Apparently, they only made a few, and they didn't sell very well because they were simply too expensive. Beautifully made it is. I took it round to John Pearse when he was still living in Turnpike Lane, when I first got it, and he told me that it has a Natoh wood neck - a rare, very hard wood that will never warp, and doesn't need any laminations. It had a Brazilian rosewood body, and the mother of pearl inlay is real bits of mother of pearl, not the usual plastic strip. John really drooled over it - and him a Martin afficionado too. So, I hope that's answered the enquiry. I've never heard of a Damion or a Tama before, let alone had one. I did swap my old J45 Gibson for it by the way. Best deal I ever made. |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Big Al Whittle Date: 05 Aug 06 - 05:34 PM Just talking to derek on the phone - he's doing a gig at the Highcliff in Sheffield, October 2nd. I've been trying to convince him to put his gigs on to mudcat, as its not so easy to get to see him these days, when he's not gigging every single folk club. and us fans need to be kept informed. I don't think he's convinced. |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Lanfranc Date: 05 Aug 06 - 09:05 PM Well, that's laid that ghost! At some point someone (not me, or at least I don't think so!) said Del's guitar was a Tama and said it convincingly enough that everyone believed them! I might do a search for Tama through the Lyrics and Knowledgebase to check, but Tama have got a fair bit of credit for it over the years. Someone will probably find out that Tama and Kasuga guitars were made by the same factory! All I ever knew for certain was that it is a beautiful instrument, played by one of the best guitarists I have known. Keep fingering that tree of life, Del!! Alan |
Subject: RE: New Derek Brimstone website From: Lanfranc Date: 05 Aug 06 - 09:11 PM I did a search, for what it is worth (not much) and it was Murray McLeod who began the misattribution, although I'm sad to say that I also contributed in innocent ignorance. Henceforth my contributions will all be consigned to the BS section. Back to Del's website. Alan |
