I use DADGAD tuning, but the basic chords I use are as follows -

verse; D - Bm - D - G - Em - A - D - repeat

Chorus; Bm - D - G - Em - D - Bm - D - G -Em - A - G - Em - A

All the above info'is great - I've even ordered a three CD's and a book from the Fogarty's Cove web site - but can anyone just simply post the chords for Lock Keeper? None of the leads that I have taken from the submissions above have proved fruitful.

I believe Between The Breaks was the live recording which had the "Witch of the Westmereland" on it that I mentioned above. It's certainly one of my favorites and does capture the spirit of the gang in performance.

Funny, no one has mentioned Between The Breaks, my favorite Stan Rogers album. It has Mary Ellen Carter, Barrett's Privateers, White Collar Holler & a few other nice ones.

Bok, Muir and Trickett do a good version of Lock Keeper. I think it's on the album, And So Will We Yet.

Never heard Stan myself. Mate of mine went to USA and found a great fondness for Stan amongst American folkies. ' The Mary Ellen Carter' is a great song which I think may be one of Stan's.

I put in my vote for Fogarty's Cove as well. I also liked For the Family very much, and, although I haven't heard Home in Halifax in its entirety, the cuts I have heard lead me to suspect that I would rank it among the best. Some of the others are a little "too much" for me, but that's a matter of taste; obviously many people are enthused about all of them, end to end.

I'd start with Fogarty's Cove, but know that once you're hooked you're doomed to want them all!

I do admit, though, that sometimes Stan Rogers crosses the line into sentimental claptrap. Just where that line is depends on your personal tolerance for such stuff.

I still remember the first time I heard the band cover Archie Fisher's "Witch of the Westmereland." What a gorgeous song, and what a splendid rendition!

"Home In Halifax" is your best bet. It has a great selection of songs and the concert patter, which is wonderful. I agree with Rapaire that you'll soon want, if not have, them all!

As an aside from this thread: I've heard a few Stan Rogers songs by other people, and was impressed with the songs, bu he's one of those artists I've been hoping to catch up with but I'm ashamed to say I've not got around to yet.

Can anyone recommend what the best CD is, for someone like me to get into his songs? Is there a compilation of some of his best stuff that you would recommend as a starting point?

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Having recently just about got the hang of strumming a number of songs with a guitar, I want to try picking a few and have always loved this song and there is no better way than to learn on a song that you want to learn - if you see what I mean - does anyone have the chords?

I've tried the blue clicky thing on Joe Offers submission above but it doesn't seem to work. Are you there Joe, or Pete or anyone else who can help?

Thanks Joe. It was good to have the chords also. I play in the open tuning suggested and found the format the song was presented in really useful. I would have spent ages working it out myself.

Yes, Bok, Muir, and Trickett recorded it on their And So Will We Yet compact disc, with Ed Trickett singing the lead. That's Folk-Legacy CD-116. Now I'll post this and see if the link works!

I understand from the Stan Rogers site and from the CD notes that the song was written by Rogers. I think Bok-Muir-Trickett recorded it, too.
