I have been searching for the lyrics to a 60's song recorded by Jimmy Dean. Song Name: PT109 - It became fairly popular. It is about John Kennedy and his PT Boat during WWII. I've got the music and the chords worked out but I don't remember most of the lyrics. Thanks

Trent

PT-109
Written by M. Wilkin and F. Burch
As recorded by Jimmy Dean on "Jimmy Dean's Greatest Hits" (Columbia Records CS 9295)

1. In forty-three, they put to sea:
Thirteen men and Kennedy,
Aboard the PT-109
To fight the brazen enemy,
And off the Isle of Olasana,
In the strait beyond Naru,
A Jap destroyer in the night
Cut the One-Oh-Nine in two.

CHORUS: Smoke and fire upon the sea!
Everywhere they looked was the enemy.
The heathen gods of old Japan,
Yeah, they thought they had the best of a mighty good man.

2. And on the coast of Kolombangara,
Looking through his telescope,
Australian Evans saw the battle,
For the crew had little hope.
Two were dead; some were wounded.
All were clingin' to the bow,
Fightin' fire and a-fightin' water,
Tryin' to save their lives somehow. CHORUS

3. McMahon, the Irishman,
Was burned so badly he couldn't swim.
"Leave me here; go on," he said,
"'Cause if you don't, we'll all be dead."
The PT skipper couldn't leave him,
A man to die alone at sea,
And with a strap between his teeth,
He towed the Irishman through the sea. CHORUS

4. He led his men through waters dark,
Rocky reefs, and hungry sharks,
Braved the enemy's bayonets,
A thirty-eight hung 'round his neck.
Four more days and four more nights,
A rescue boat pulled into sight.
The PT-109 was gone,
But Kennedy and his men lived on.

SPOKEN: Now who could guess,
Or who could possibly know
That this same man named Kennedy—

SUNG: Would be the leader of the nation,
Be the one to take command?
The PT-109 was gone,
But Kennedy lived to fight again.

CHORUS: Smoke and fire upon the sea!
Everywhere they looked was the enemy.
But JFK and his crew lived on,
Which proves—it's hard to get the best of a man named John.

Big John, Big John, Big John.

I am searching for the lyrics "You Belong to Me" Possibly by Jo Stafford. I know it was a popular WWII song, and I know the Skyliners sang it I think in the 1950s. It starts: "See the pyramids along the Nile, watch the sunrise on a tropic isle...." I can't seem to find the rest of the lyrics. Please help!!! Thanks!!

M. Wilkin, who you credit with writing this song, is the country songwriter Marijohn Wilkin who wrote the great hit song for Lefty Frizell, "THE LONG BLACK VEIL"

She walks these hills in a long black veil
Visits my grave when the night winds wail,
Nobody knows---nobody sees,
Nobody knows but me!

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU BELONG TO ME (King/Price/Stewart)
From: vial@aol.com

See the Pyramids along the Nile.
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle.
Just remember, darling, all the while.
You belong to me.

Fly the ocean in a silver plane.
See the jungle when it's wet with rain.
Just remember till you're home again,
You belong to me.

(bridge)
I'd be so alone without you.
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue.

See the marketplace in old Algiers.
send me photographs and souvenirs.
Just remember when a dream appears,
You belong to me.

(Repeat from bridge and out)

You will have to forgive my spelling. I am a musician not a speller. I think you will be able to understand what I am trying to say.

Hey guys -- you will have better luck if you start ONE thread for each lyrics request. Tacking them one after another like this they get lost from sight and won't attract the attention of those who can help.

I think I found the "angel" lyrics here so I e-mailed a link to Dave & Sue. I still wonder how they came up with an "angel" request in a 1997 PT-109 thread. There has to be a glitch in some search engine that leads people astray. I'd sure like to know how it happens.

I don't recall that song, but do recall that Eddy Arnold used to sing a song with the same title. I located it at

Thanks, George. The song I linked to didn't sound familiar to me. I'm pretty sure the one you linked to is the right one.
