Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Don Firth Date: 30 Jul 06 - 03:06 PM Some cynic (realist?) once commented, "We won't have solar power until they figure out how to run a sunbeam through a meter." Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Scoville Date: 30 Jul 06 - 05:10 PM Ha ha! Probably true, Don. 97 on the way home from meeting. Ah, we're back were we're supposed to be . . . |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 30 Jul 06 - 05:13 PM Bedroom was a comfy 71 at 5.oopm... Now it's bed time and it's nearly 80. Thought evenings were supposed to be cooler ~ and no, it doesn't face west. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Alice Date: 31 Jul 06 - 09:11 AM Checked my apple tree last night and the leaves were crinkled and shriveling. Got the hose on it right away. Hope it survives. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: nutty Date: 31 Jul 06 - 09:21 AM It's cooler here today - thank God. Quite a stiff breeze coming off the sea and it's threatening to rain. Still in the 70's in the shade but for the first time for weeks I'm actually getting fresh air in the house without resorting to artificial means. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: keberoxu Date: 22 May 20 - 06:38 PM ARE there solar-powered refrigerated-air-conditioners actually? |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Mrrzy Date: 22 May 20 - 07:55 PM Probably not... Makes too much sense. Close to 80°F/27°C with tornado warning here in Charlottesville, VA, USA. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Steve Shaw Date: 22 May 20 - 08:14 PM Interesting to read here of the conditions in 2006 in the UK. That was an exceptional summer, one of the warmest ever recorded. It was also very dry here in Cornwall; we had just four inches of rain in four months. We've had more than our usual share of good, or at at least half-decent, summers since then. We've also had a run of very mild winters. This spring in England has been exceptionally dry and sunny. The wind has been in the east at times, which pegs temperatures back. But overall it's going to go down as a vintage spring. I have a deep Mediterranean tan already, and that's just from doing the gardening... |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Senoufou Date: 23 May 20 - 02:04 AM I love heat, any amount of it. I must be a lizard or something! It was 25C yesterday, and I sat on The Bench out the front in full sunshine in a cardigan. The oil tanker arrived and the oil man was perspiring like a fountain, poor bloke. He couldn't believe I had a woolly on. He filled our tank (we kept well away from each other) and I put an ice-cold can of Diet Coke from my husband's stash in the fridge on the pavement for him. He gulped it down thankfully. I had a nice hot cup of tea after he'd left! |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: John MacKenzie Date: 23 May 20 - 06:17 AM Central heating on here today, as it's cold wet and windy in the highlands today. 10C, it must be nearly June. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: keberoxu Date: 24 May 20 - 08:30 PM It isn't just that people are itching to get out of the house: here in Massachusetts, where the restrictions have been eased, people are looking for lakes to swim in because it's baking hot in the sunshine. No miserable humidity, though -- that will come along soon enough. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Charmion Date: 25 May 20 - 09:39 AM In Stratford, Ontario, it snowed two weeks ago, I finally turned off the furnace last week, and on Saturday the air-conditioner kicked on for the first time. The electric fans are out of winter storage in the interest of less-sweaty sleep. Yesterday, I sweated buckets while transplanting a couple of hosta and desultorily pulling a few weeds. We have now officially entered Beer On The Porch season. Next: killer humidity, and the pong of pig-farming when the wind is in the wrong quarter, which is most of them. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Neil D Date: 26 May 20 - 08:12 PM It was 89F (32C) today. Less than 2 weeks ago we had snow on the ground. There was a day last week where we had a morning frost and then it went up to 70. Here in Ohio we say "If you don't like the weather just hang around because it is sure to change. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Senoufou Date: 27 May 20 - 03:34 AM It's usually around 90F (mid thirties C) in Abidjan. My in-laws are quite used to this, including the high humidity. Occasionally the Harmattan (seasonal wind) blows and it gets what they call 'a bit chilly' (about 80F) When husband visits them, he's sweltering for the first few days and panting for breath, but then he acclimatises. When he gets back to UK he's shivering at first and wears his woolly jumper for a bit! |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: keberoxu Date: 31 May 20 - 05:50 PM The cicadas, both annual and periodic, are cold-blooded. They can only sing and propagate their species when they are warmed up by the sun. It's cicada season in certain spots. Not warm here at all, though; you? |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: keberoxu Date: 02 Jun 20 - 11:10 AM It might warm up tomorrow, but for now it feels like late April. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: keberoxu Date: 04 Jun 20 - 07:37 PM well, it is warmER, anyway, and soon enough the heat and humidity will make me nostalgic for the cool spell we had this week. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Mrrzy Date: 05 Jun 20 - 08:32 AM When I lived in Abidjan it never got below the *high* 80's. I would wear a sweater. It didn't get above the mid-90's usually either. But go inland, even Korhogo, aand it got a LOT hotter. Aah, it was nice. Going even farther inland and it got dry, and even hotter, wow. Now I have broken down and put on the AC in my bedroom, so the rest of my house is really hot in comparison. Summer is approaching Charlottesville. One of the main reasons I like it here is that it never got hot enough, or humid enough, for my preferences, when I lived in the Boston area. Aaah. High heat and high humidity. Now if only I could go to the beach! |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Charmion Date: 05 Jun 20 - 10:25 AM I must be a boreal creature because I loathe hot weather; my pale, fragile skin breaks out in a prickly rash except in the corners where the eczema runs riot, and my respiratory system goes all asthmatic and hostile. Southern Ontario can get quite spectacularly hot, but never for long; within a few days, an equally spectacular thunderstorm will brew up, the world explodes with racket and rain, and the day after is fresh and about five degrees (Celsius) cooler, if not more. In Stratford, the extreme heat is an inconvenience; in Toronto, full as it is of stinking, belching motor vehicles, it's utter misery. Today, the sky is clear, the air is still, and a gentle pong of pig manure permeates the area. Environment Canada is pretty sure we will have a thunderstorm before the day is out, and my aching feet tend to agree. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Charmion's brother Andrew Date: 05 Jun 20 - 11:15 AM Charmion also hates cold weather, which means life is not as easy for her as it is for the rest of us in Ontario. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Charmion Date: 05 Jun 20 - 12:25 PM Life got easier when I decamped to Perth County, brother dear. Winter as you know it in Ottawa hardly ever happens here, and we have magnolias and azaleas all over the place to prove it. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Donuel Date: 05 Jun 20 - 01:46 PM Where in Boston Mrzzy? Chestnut Hill, Jamaica Plain, Dedham, Dorchester beach? |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: keberoxu Date: 05 Jun 20 - 02:56 PM Donuel, Mrrzy will correct me if I'm wrong, and I hope I'm using the right non-binary pronoun here, but -- they -- were at Tufts Medical School, I believe. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Donuel Date: 05 Jun 20 - 04:52 PM No wonder he gets my "jokes". I don't do the non binary crap, I am barely analog let alone digital. Not that there is anything wrong with that. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Donuel Date: 05 Jun 20 - 06:04 PM the biggest storm o the season is coming to the east coast. a gulf tropical storm combines with a storm from the north and hits head on. this is going to surprise everyone except those who can see the gulf from space. |
Subject: RE: BS: How warm is it where you are? From: Donuel Date: 05 Jun 20 - 06:12 PM heads up thurs-sat |
