You've got to hear this.
Go to the second picture down from the video page.
Where it says October 7th. 2005
Click there.
Scroll down to "Phil Cunningham".
Click there.
Listen to the second number. It is a slow piece. It builds and builds. The hair on your back or chills will be felt   Truly beautiful.

I've played fiddle for many years and sing many different kinds of songs although it's true that for the last few years I've concentrated on sea shanties.

I really like the Clare style of Irish fiddling.

My first post to this thread was really a reaction to the spate of "best of ..." threads on Mudcat. I mean, why can't you say "Great Cape Breton fiddling" instead of "Fiddling at its best"? The "best" threads ignore or belittle the existance of other styles.

From: wysiwyg

Fellas, this is a music thread that will sit here as a resource for years to come. How about we let the rest go? I've retitled the subject line of my post so that GREAT CAPE BRETON FIDDLING will show up later on a Supersearch. OK?

Natalie was just appointed to the Order of Canada, in membership wherein she will join her Uncle Buddy!

Membership in the Order "Recognizes: a lifetime of distinguished service in or to a particular community, group or field of activity"

I'm sure she's one of the youngest appointees.

Sometimes other fiddlers will put Cape Breton music down a bit simply because they can't play it. Even the great Don Messer was not able to play the Cape Breton style. Cec MacEachern did a much better job on it on the old Messer show. It is very exact in timing and the bowing is intricate. It came mostly from Gaelic Scotland and has been preserved here. The music in Scotland has changed and is no longer the same, but some there are adopting more of a Cape Breton style.
