Subject: Lyr Req: Boy who didn't know he couldn't fly
From: fi_in_nz

Hi there - I'm looking for the lyrics (and tune if at all poss) for a song I heard Eric Bibb sing last weekend. don't know the title but it's about a boy who didn't know he couldn't fly and flys off the garage wearing a cape. Really great song about the power of self belief. If anyone knows it, I'd be really grateful if you could post it. Have googled it with not luck. cheers F

Well, I found a Guy Clark song recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker. I'll betcha that's it. I love Guy Clark's songs. I won't vouch for the accuracy of these lyrics.

^^ The Cape
Guy Clark (as recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker)

Well he's eight years old, he's got a flour sack cape tied all around his neck
He's climbing up on top the garage, figurin' what the heck
He screws his courage up so darn tight, that the whole thing come unwound
He got a runnin' start and bless his heart, he headed for the ground

Chorus
'Cause he's one of those who knows his life
Is just a leap of faith
Gotta' spread your arms and hold your breath
And always trust your cape

Well he's all grown up, he's got a flour sack cape tied all around his dream
He's full of piss and vinegar, ah, he's bustin' at the seams
He licks his finger and checks the wind, it's gonna be do or die
He wasn't scared of nothin', boys, he was pretty sure he could fly
Chorus

Now he's old and grey, with a flour sack cape tied all around his head
And he's still jumpin' off the garage and will be til he's dead
All these years the people said the fool was actin' like a kid
And since he didn't know he couldn't fly, well of course he did
Chorus

Reminds me of my stepson, skulking around the rooftop in a batman cape and suit he made. I hope he never loses sight of his dreams.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: THE CAPE (Guy Clark)

I learnt this not long back - cracking song. It's one of three songs (the other two being "Galway farmer" by Show of Hands and "Ready for the storm" by Dougie Maclean) which still choke me up when I hear them, and sometimes when I sing them too. Don't know why, but there's some songs that just rip your emotions out.

EB's version has two guitars, basically rhythm and "lead twiddles". I've worked out a fairly nice fingerstyley version - could PM you the tab if you wanted. But for the actual tune of the song, I suggest you buy the CD. ;-)

Anyway, here's words and chords, roughly the way Eric Bibb does it (or at least the way I play it). I may not be doing it in the same key he did, though. The "slash" chords are just walking the bass line down - play straight D or Bm if you want a simplified version. Or transpose into G and use a capo if you don't do barre chords (transposing left as an exercise for the reader... ;-)

(Intro)
D D/C# Bm Bm/A G A D

(Verse 1)
D          D/C#       Bm         Bm/A      G    A         D
Eight years old with a flour sack cape tied all around his neck
D       D/C# Bm      Bm/A   G                A
He climbed up on the garage, figurin' what the heck
    D          D/C#   Bm    Bm/A       G                A
He screwed his courage up so tight the whole thing came unwound
       D       D/C#      Bm       Bm/A       G      A       D
Got a runnin' start and, bless his heart, he headed for the ground

(Chorus)
    Bm          Bm/A                   G             D
He's one of those who knows that life is just a leap of faith
D          D/C#    Bm       Bm/A       G      A          D
Spread your arms and hold your breath and always trust your cape

(Verse 2)
Well he's all grown up with a flour sack cape tied all around his dream
He's full of piss and vinegar, and he's bustin' at the seams
He licks his finger and checks the wind, it's gonna be do or die
He wasn't scared of nothin', boys, he was pretty sure he could fly

(Verse 3)
Now he's old and grey with a flour sack cape tied all around his head
But he's still jumpin' off the garage and will be 'til he's dead
All these years the people said he's actin' like a kid
But he didn't know he could not fly, so he did

Hope that's of use.

Graham.

I happened to be really absorbing songs from the radio the first time I heard that, and when he (Guy Clarke) hit the last line I teared up. I think that, and Dublin Blues, got me really hooked on Clarke.
