Subject: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,Skipy Date: 28 Jul 06 - 06:16 PM Give it a go, for the next 28 days, don't read anything that is given to us by a GUEST. Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: skipy Date: 28 Jul 06 - 06:27 PM This has to be THE classic moment for my cookie to fail, and for those who know me this was not planned! Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: number 6 Date: 28 Jul 06 - 06:29 PM Well then skipy ..... I really don't think it will work. sIx |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: skipy Date: 28 Jul 06 - 06:30 PM You think it will not work, I KNOW it will not work. Skipy |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,friend of skipy Date: 28 Jul 06 - 06:47 PM Most Guest posts are members who want to say something without getting verbals ! I am happy to remain a guest and pop in and have my say. Then there is the other Guest who is really a member and just throws insults when he's angry. Yes member from Middle England You ! |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST, Ebbie Date: 28 Jul 06 - 07:13 PM Won't work. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: mack/misophist Date: 28 Jul 06 - 08:06 PM Don't care enough to care. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 28 Jul 06 - 08:38 PM better yet, don't respond to GUESTs .. it just causes gets everything in a tizzy and destroys the natural order of things. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: JohnInKansas Date: 28 Jul 06 - 09:42 PM What won't work? Maybe that GUEST who was impersonating skipy said something; but of course I didn't read it. Never do ... usually. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 28 Jul 06 - 10:06 PM I only read GUEST posts! I've found it provides a unique perspective. Fucked up, but unique. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 28 Jul 06 - 10:51 PM Hey Skipper, what do you have against guests? Are you anti-social or something? |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Sorcha Date: 28 Jul 06 - 10:53 PM Skipy....Fooestroupe and I in Giok chat. Come on over. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Clinton Hammond Date: 28 Jul 06 - 10:55 PM The problem is, there's no way to know a thread is started by a Guest, until you open it.... Which is standard on most other message boards |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:03 AM AGREED!!!
|
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:06 AM Far worse going on with members. Try a shambles thread or some of Lizzie Cornish's. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Peace Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:24 AM Thing is, GUEST, you can say that. And we know who you are talking about. However, who knows who who's talking about when it comes to GUESTS? (No offence.) Make BS a members-ony area and the problem then becomes more easily pinpointed, no? |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,Jon Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:52 AM I don't know, Peace. Most of the troublesome GUEST posts I see are not from casual passers though but people who have been around a while (some easily longer than you BTW). It might cure the problem (and at one time I thought it a good idea for here), on the other hand, it might just transfer problems and people might find other ways. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Peace Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:58 AM Maybe, Jon. However, would it hurt to try for six months? Guests would have access to the other threads. If indeed people come 'for the music', there is lotsa music that isn't in the BS section. Most of it isn't in fact. They could read the threads in BS if they so chose, and based on what they read they can opt to get a membership or opt not to. Six months: it's a no-lose proposition. IMO. That's my two-cents worth. I will not be back to this thread. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,Jon Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:59 AM I'm not saying it's right or wrong, Peace. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: The Shambles Date: 29 Jul 06 - 02:28 AM Far worse going on with members. Try a shambles thread or some of Lizzie Cornish's. If you can find one that has not been closed....... |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 07:09 AM Roll up roll up folks. Let's sit back and watch the same old drivel from the same old folks. Personally I love the member multiple personality posts, eh Peace? |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 Jul 06 - 09:47 AM AGREED!!! No, NEVER... Now that's a comment that really has it both ways! As would be the case with "I DISAGREE!!! Yes, ALWAYS..." ........................... If people want to risk personation by others who are liable to use the name by the post under as GUESTs, that's their choice. No doubt in some cases there are sensible enough reasons they do it. As for the ones who post without a name, that's just graffiti. Background stuff you pass by and it fades away. In both cases it's as well to remember that there is no particular reason to assume it's the same person in any two consecutive posts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 29 Jul 06 - 09:58 AM The trouble is people read them, and they say things that should not go unchallenged. This is a great site, but how much better if without Guest postings, at least in BS. Keith. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 10:00 AM Yes you challenge and it goes on for weeks and everyone else leaves. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 29 Jul 06 - 10:06 AM You would prefer a lie to stand? |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 10:20 AM There are many interpretations of what exactly what is the truth here. The Roots of Anti-Irish Racism being one. Delusion has helped to preserve your English pride and altruism would be nice and more understanding to republicans |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 29 Jul 06 - 10:23 AM Wrong thread I think Guest. Do you think that members can not argue for themselves without your support? |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 10:25 AM "Kilgore was here" is graffiti ... by someone with a name. Not much difference. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 10:27 AM Shamble, Your threads are absolute gibberish and deserve to be closed for the sake of everyone's sanity. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 29 Jul 06 - 10:51 AM I usually skip the "From: ... " bit anyway and just read the posts, without being aware of whether it's a guest or not. Sometimes, if the post is particularly interesting or amusing, I will look to see who wrote it, and it's usually one of the same dozen or so people, some of whom are members and some named guests. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,Jim Date: 29 Jul 06 - 12:32 PM I've been contributing and reading mudcat ever since it was recommended to me a few years ago. What is the advantage of becoming a mudcat member? I have no need to remain anonymous, but it's much easier not to have to sign in. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 29 Jul 06 - 12:44 PM Doesn't matter whether posters are 'Guests' or bona-fide members, we all post (pretty much) anonymously, which has always seemed lacking in cojones to me. Why not change the rules and have no 'Guests' but only members, who all have to post in our real identities, with names, addresses and phone numbers in a register visible to all members. Then watch the dickheads run for cover. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:03 PM Putting that kind of information on the 'net makes you the biggest dickhead. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: JennyO Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:10 PM Strollin' Johnny, I get what you're saying, but I think you'd find more than the dickheads running for cover! I'd still rather choose who knows my address and phone number, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Not a good idea - especially for a woman. Jim, once you have logged in as a member, your computer will remember every time you open up Mudcat, so no need to sign in every time - unless you have cleared out your cookies. As long as you remember your password you can log in as a member on other computers too. If you ever need to post as a guest, say, in Secret Santa threads, you just log out and then log in again. The advantages of being a member include being able to trace threads that you are interested in following, being able to send and receive personal messages from other members (without anyone needing to know your email address), knowing that you are clearly identified as you, and being able to view messages by date or since your last visit. And finally, that intangible pleasurable feeling of belonging to a community - a feeling that I can relate to. All you have to do is click on "membership" at the top of the forum page, and it's quite painless. Only your name, the Mudcat name and password you choose and your email address are compulsory to fill in. You can fill in your address and phone number if you want, but only the fields with asterisks have to be filled in. I joined nearly 4 years ago, and it's been all good! Jenny |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,Jim Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:50 PM One good reason for becoming a member is that it would mean you couldn't have someone else posting in your name, Jim, like I am right now. That avoids the possibility of you being thought to have said all kinds of unpleasant things that you would never dream of saying. Unfortunately there are people around who go in for that kind of thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 29 Jul 06 - 01:54 PM We get a lot of that on the irish threads. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Peace Date: 29 Jul 06 - 03:04 PM Lots on the Gaza thread, too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 03:29 PM Like your ones above Keith. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 03:32 PM I never post under my name of Ash, sometimes under guest, sometimes under my members name. Nothing wrong with that is there ? |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 29 Jul 06 - 11:42 PM The database is open.

Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST Date: 29 Jul 06 - 11:50 PM what do yo mean by node, garg? |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: readguestposts Date: 30 Jul 06 - 12:11 AM I disagree with skipy. I think everyone should read guest posts, if they are interesting or entertaining. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,rereadguestposts Date: 30 Jul 06 - 12:36 AM They usually are, in the music section. BS should be members only. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 30 Jul 06 - 04:16 AM JennyO, well of course I realised that. I wasn't exactly serious, just trying to make the point that 'Guests' are no more anonymous than members (and not making it very well, I guess!). I keep seeing comments that people should only read/respond to members' postings, as though members are somehow 'known' to other members but, in the main, members are just as anonymous as guests, so where's the difference? A guest is just someone who hasn't got a cookie. Me? I'll read and respond to anybody whose posts are worth the time and effort! :-) S:0) |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 30 Jul 06 - 04:36 AM I tried to re-join but the system told me that my e-mail address was simultaneously "on the database" and "not on the database" - so I gave up and have no alternative but to post as a 'Guest'. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: JennyO Date: 30 Jul 06 - 05:26 AM GUEST,Shimrod, send a PM to Joe Offer giving him your information, and he should be able to sort you out. Good luck! Jenny |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: The Shambles Date: 30 Jul 06 - 05:26 AM Me? I'll read and respond to anybody whose posts are worth the time and effort! :-) Unless of course this had already been decided for you and 'silently deleted' anonymously - before you have the chance to decide for yourself. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 30 Jul 06 - 05:46 AM " members are just as anonymous as guests, so where's the difference?" When a member makes an unsubstantiated attack, he can be asked to back it up or withdraw, and reminded every time he posts. When he fails, he loses credibility. Guests spew out lies and when challenged can just start again with a clean slate every time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: The Shambles Date: 30 Jul 06 - 06:39 AM When a member makes an unsubstantiated attack, he can be asked to back it up or withdraw, and reminded every time he posts. When he fails, he loses credibility. Not when the member is not only allowed to do this but also allowed to impose judgement on and 'slently delete' the posts of their fellow posters - and still remain anonymous...... |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't read guest posts From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 30 Jul 06 - 07:16 AM So, it's got to be back to my original suggestion - real names, no anonymity. Then we'll find out who's really got balls and who's just a big flappy-gobbed bag of wind! While people can make any sort of statement with anonimity, nobody has any credibility. IMHO. |
