Subject: Going to San Francisco.... From: Johnhenry'shammer Date: 29 Jul 06 - 12:08 AM I'm going to be in San Francisco for about a week this summer and I wanted to know about any cool folk or jazz clubs I can check out even though i'm 16. Thanks |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: open mike Date: 29 Jul 06 - 12:39 AM be sure to wear some flowers in your hair...(lyrics from a 60's song) the san francisco folk music club hosts some music events and activities...which week will you be there?see: www.sffmc.org/ Faith Petric hosts events on alternating fridays and you may want to check out the Plowshares Acoustic Music Series if it is held at the place i think it is, it is at Fort Mason which is a wonderful complex housing restaurants, offices of organizations such as Greenpeace and other interesting places in a converted military barracks, if i remember correctly. you might find shanty sings at the Maritime Museum, a National Park on the Hyde Street Pier, and Hootenanny night is apparently on hiatus right now but you can see some info and some venues listed at http://www.sfhootenanny.homestead.com/ on the last weekend in june you would have been able to attend the sf free folk fest which you unfortunately have missed for this year, but isn't that our own loveable Pam Swan playing the bodhran on their web page? |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Richard Brandenburg Date: 29 Jul 06 - 03:52 AM If you can get to the East Bay, don't miss The Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, the premier folk club in the area. Quite a great variety of music each month. Check out the monthly schedules at: www.freightandsalvage.com |

Sessions every Wednesday night, bands on Friday and Saturday nights. See www.theblackrosepub.com for schedule. A little way out of town, there is the Ace-in-the-Hole Pub, home of Ace ciders. See http://www.acecider.com/pubevents.html Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Greg B Date: 29 Jul 06 - 03:39 PM The Plough and Stars in San Francisco is an Irish pub with great trad acts on various evenings in the week. |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Greg B Date: 29 Jul 06 - 03:58 PM Of course we forgot to mention the chantey sings at the Hyde Street Pier (Fisherman's Wharf area) on the first Saturday of each month. |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: GUEST,Jim Date: 30 Jul 06 - 04:09 AM Again in the East Bay, there's a great Irish session folk session/sing hosted by Shay Black at the Plough and Stars in Berkeley on Sundays. Mainly a pub, but nominally a restaurant, it allows underaged folks in to listen and perhaps have a burger. I've brought my daughter a couple of times. And by all means, if you have a say in when you're going to be here, try to be here for the first Saturday of the month so you can go to the chantey sing at the Hyde Street Pier. This is definately a folkie "can't miss" event. |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: GUEST,Guest.David Date: 30 Jul 06 - 11:29 AM There really isn't a whole lot in San Francisco anymore that features folk music. I believe the San Francisco Folk Club is still around holding their twice monthly meetings. I don't believe the Starry Plough in Fort Mason is still around. |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Dave Swan Date: 30 Jul 06 - 12:13 PM It's been well covered here. Hyde Street at the maritime museum is a great shanty sing, lots of fun. The Starry Plough is going strong in San Francisco. Shay's session at the Plough and Stars in Berkeley is not to be missed. Oak Ash & Thorn plays the Freight and Salvage on August 19. D. |

Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: open mike Date: 30 Jul 06 - 01:36 PM some places have rules that those under 21 can be present as long as the place is serving food, but when the kitchen closes, minors are no longer allowed in the joint. In some places the kitchen closes at 9, some acts and stages start up at 9. Good Luck! |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Dave Swan Date: 30 Jul 06 - 04:20 PM Thank you, Laurel. Ass backwards on my part. It's not as though I've never been to either one. Sheesh. D |

Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: open mike Date: 30 Jul 06 - 05:02 PM and don't forget the sea music festival at the maritime museum on hyde st. pier in september. (also see shanty sing thread on this forum) |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Peter Kasin Date: 30 Jul 06 - 09:42 PM The session at The Starry Plough, in Berkeley, serves food until 10pm. The session begins at 8pm, so you're good for the first half. Shay Black runs a very welcoming, friendly session. The chantey sing at Hyde Street Pier is open to all ages. The next two are on Saturday, August 5 and Saturday, September 9. As open mike mentioned, the Sept one will coincide with the Festival of the Sea. Both events are free. To reserve space for the chantey sing, which is held aboard an historic ship, call 415-561-7170. It's alot of fun and there's no pressure to sing. You'll meet other Mudcatters there, such as Melani, Jim, Radriano, Riggy,Toadfrog, Musique174, BillR, me (Chanteyranger), and occasionally p.j. and Dave Swan, Sourdough, Joe Offer...and who am I missing? |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: GUEST Date: 31 Jul 06 - 02:10 AM Guest.David, just to add to the confusion, the lost venue at Fort Mason was known as Ploughshares. |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Felipa Date: 01 Aug 06 - 12:03 PM are any of these events daytime (for instance a Sun afternoon)? |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: Felipa Date: 08 Aug 06 - 12:20 PM and what about Oakland California? (will be in Oakland and Santa Rosa next week, so if you are in the area you are invited to p-mail me, though I won't have much free time) |
Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: michaelr Date: 08 Aug 06 - 06:37 PM Nothing in Oakland that I'm aware of, but Berkeley is right next door. Sunday session, as mentioned, at the Starry Plough begins at 8 pm. |

Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: GUEST,Gary Keep Date: 08 Aug 06 - 06:54 PM In Oakland there is Sea Music every Thursday night from 8-10, no cover , with Skip Henderson and the Starboard Watch. For a real neighborhood jam, I've heard that the Bluegrass Jams at MCGraths pub in Alameda are great, but I have not attended one of their many session for at least a year. There is also a Sunday afternoon Irish Session followed by an evening American Jam. Speisekammer Restaurant in Alameda also has bluegrass, old timey, tin pan alley, and other interesting genres of music on weekend nights. Ceolas website will give you some info on Irish/Celtic sessions around the Bay Area but some of the info may be out of date. There are numerous BlueGrass venues in San Francisco once again as well as some Old Timey jams here and there. I think there is also a Pizza place in Pinole with bluegrass most nights. Alameda Elks Lodge had a well known Cajun/Zydeco dance every Friday night. Top Zydeco groups make appearences here on a regular basis. Its a small venue. I think lessons are at 8 and the open dance starts at 9. If you hang out around outside Dave and Pam Swans nieghborhood your also likely to hear someone tearing out a tonsil. :o, ;) Gary |

Subject: RE: Going to San Francisco.... From: GUEST,emily s Date: 13 Aug 06 - 01:06 PM Thanks everybody for all the info. My husband and I are heading to San Francisco this week and it's good to know what's up. We'll be there from Aug16-21. If anyone knows specifics for that time and are able to post, it would be much appreciated. We're staying near Union Square and won't have a car though. Can anyone tell me how possible it would be to get to the Oakland/Sea Music sing without a car? Many thanks to all you posters. Emily - Hoping to escape the Texas heat |
