Does anyone know the chords to "Candy Man" - that's the Rev. Gary Davis' song (also done by Dave Van Ronk and Donovan)?

NOT the Mississippi John Hurt, Roy Orbison, or Sammy Davis Jnr songs of the same name.

I've checked past threads but found nowt.

Thanks in advance.

Norman

It's played in C, back picked, which means the thumb plays the 3rd and fifth strings, starting on the 3rd. Van Ronk did a teaching DVD, I think he shows it on there. If not there are transcriptions of Rev. Davis' version.

Yes, C fingerings is correct and, as Mark says, the thumb (bass) line is backwards from what you may be used to playing. The full progression is…

C
Candy man, candy man,

G7         C
Candy man, candy man,

C
Candy man, candy man,

F                  C
Wish I was down in New Orleans,

G7                C
Sittin' on a candy stand.

As you can see, the progression is extremely simple, the only difficult part being to learn to play the inverted bass part. But, really, if the progession isn't apparant the first time you hear this tune, you may not be ready to tackle it.

Thanks, Marks.

I see what you mean about the inverted bass part - it can throw you, or at least put the picking pattern out. Otherwise, a simple progression.....

You might want to try an A chord between the C and the G7th towards the end.
