In what key do you sing it?

I don't have tab but chords run more or less as such, in G:

Way [G] down in Columbus, Georgia,
I [D] long to be back in Tennes[G]see,
Way [G]down in Columbus Stockade,
All my [D]friends have turned their backs on [G]me.

You can [C]go and leave me if you [G]want to,
[C]Never let me cross your [G]mind, [D]
If in your [G]heart you love another,
Oh, [D]leave me, darling, I don't [G]mind.

It'll absolutely depend on the performer too. Monroe nicked the words from a trad English song, and various people have nicked it back subsequently (with or without the bluegrassy-ness). Being a Show of Hands fan, I do a version in Dm which roughly follows how they play it.

    Dm
Way down in Columbus Georgia
          A                  Dm
Oh Lord I wish I was back in Tennessee
    Dm
Way down in Columbus stockade prison
A                            Dm
All my friends have turned on me
Gm                     Dm
Go and leave me if you want to
Gm                      A
Never let it cross your mind
         Dm
In your heart you love another
          A                              Dm
Won't you leave me, little darling, never mind

Graham.

Pretty sure it's a Jimmy (You Are My Sunshine}Davis song. But that's beside the point. There are all sorts of words, chords, midis, etc. if you look in Google.

Darby and Tarlton first recorded this for Columbia in 1927 (the flip side was "Birmingham Jail," also the first known recording). Although the song is obviously based on earlier folk material, Tom Darby claims the composition and is fairly enough entitled to it.

Thanks for the info, 12-stringer (and Inukshuk). My mistake, thought Monroe had claimed it.

Graham.

I think Bill Monroe is the one who changed the tune to a minor key, and others since (Leon Russell, Blackberry Smoke, etc.) have used Monroe's minor key arrangement.
