Subject: Lyr Add: Reference tool or hook up hangout?
From: Hankus Festus
Date: 31 Jul 06 - 04:41 PM

Hi folks:

I'm a starving artist looking for hook ups. I was wondering about this site. Is it mainly a reference tool cyber hang out or can it be used to network with other talents to form songwring partnerships?

I say this because I'm a lyricist who specializes in neo folk tunes and I wanted to post lyrics and an mp3 link to my work. Is this ok and do you think that I'll meet someone here who's on my wavelength?

Grew up back east. But it seems everyone on the left coast is either a zombie grunge airhead or an evil-is-hip gangsta rapper and I can't connect with anybody with a non primitive ear for folk message music.

HELP!

HF LaLaLand, SoCal

It is a reference tool, a social scene, an intercontinental marriage bureaux, and a place for blatant advertising links - as long as they are for folk or related music. It is a refuge for wit and absurdity, storytellers and some of the finest folk singers and musicians on the planet.
Suit you Sir?
Quack!

Well, why don't you hang around a bit and see? It's a little of a lot of things. This isn't Lyr Add, and might belong in the BS section, but then again it might not. Check out the FAQ, too.

A lot of 'Song Wringing' DOES go on here...

... and even some 'Song Writing' at times...

There are many folks who have "hooked up" and shared their songs, lyrics, poems, etc.here. I have had a poem, written spontaneously here, added to and sung by a woman, a professionally trained musician and performer, now a dear friend, who is originally from Scotland, now living in the US. I've had folks from North America and 'cross the pond singing their songs and trad stuff in my living room or elsewhere in person, and listened to folks from all over doing the same via a room at www.paltalk.com.

We are a lively and diverse crew of kindly, sometimes crazy/pendantic/talented/curmudgeonly/all aged people come together through their love of folk and blues music.

It's really nice that you have started out by asking instead of assuming. Thanks for that. Now that you gotten your toes wet, please join in. mp3s and lyrics are most welcome.

BTW, there are several members on the left coast. Go to the Quick Links, use the drop down menu, choose Members Photos and Info, then choose Locator to find where everyone is from and Welcome to the Mudcat!

All the best,

kat

We used to have some 'Live Music Net Rooms' where we could login and hear each other perform, one by one, but that has recently stopped happening - could we start it again?

That expression "neo folk tunes" is a bit ominous. But maybe that's just California-speak.

This place is whatever you want it to be really. It's not a question of either-or, it's both-and. Plus a lot more.

So do stick around; you'll find kindred spirits, maybe even living near enough for you to be able to meet and make music together, and a greta source of arcane information and people to argue with from all round the world. If you play around with the search button and it's amazing what you are likely to turn up about all kinds of stuff.

Hey, give us a break, McGrath! Here in Northern California, our folk music is traditional.

But down south, if it doesn't sell, it isn't music.

Is that like what I call 'funky alternative folkie music'?

What is California Speak? well, I've noticed that in California--

a California Burger is a burger with avacado;

a California Salad is a salad with avacado;

California Chicken is chicken served with avacado, therefore,

California Speak must be speaking with avacados.

Wow... that means I have a friend with a Californian bathroom suite....

As to the question... it's both, and why shouldn't it be? Learning can be fun, and fun can be educational. Just because something is amusing, irreverent and irrational, doesn't automatically make it not useful.

Did you know avocado is a fruit, not a vegetable? It also
has the distinction of being the only fruit with saturated
fat in. I used to hate the buggers, growing as they did
native to my home town of Ventura. My papa would eat them
cut in half, over the sink, with a spoon. And make slimy
sandwiches of them. Well, tastes change, now I'm my own
grandpa and I do the same. Go figure.

Pretty scary, the process of getting the pit out of
a half with a knife. Smack, twist, your done if you
don't have the stigmata.

Was down visiting the parental units in December, got
invited out to a local ranch to view some antique farm
equipment. Going past his house the farmer pointed out
the prize avocado tree that was as big as the house,
and shaded half of it. About 60 feet in diameter, maybe
40 feet high, branches down to the ground. 'Been there
since I was a kid...prolly get coupla tons off her this
year.' Let's see, at a buck a piece in the store, that
tree was part of the GNP! Black Haas avocados, too. None
of them green guacamole monsters. If it ever threatens
the house, sacrifice the house!

But as to 'hook ups' I know just enough teens and early
20's types to know that 'hook up' means a sort of ambiguous
amorous encounter.

Is that what you meant?

Never really thought of Mudcat like match.com, myself...

Hi Hankus...lots of potential musical hookups on Mudcat...we're all into music in a serious way, one way or another. I'm in Central Coast Calif now and stay away from LaLaLand anymore, where I grew up. Lots of good music happening here...if you've got a demo and press kit, or website, let me know and I'll pu you in touch with some contacts here. I'm yet another avocado fan...my grandparents had an avocado ranch iin Carlsbad years ago.

Welcome to Mudcat.

A Google search on avacado gets about 653,000 hits. Not too shabby, and confirms that this spelling works.

Avocado on Google gets about 11,100,000 hits, meaning this is the preferred spelling.

"Neo Folk" is an oxymoron, perhaps implying that there are still choices to be made regarding this fellow's musical leanings? Mudcat can help!

Might as well keep the thread drifting.....

I had the privilege once of doing a workshop with this completely mad, clever and amazing performer - Mal Webb. His song about an avocado was one of the songs he taught us in the workshop. It has a sort of calypso rhythm. You would have to know Mal Webb to know how much fun it was!

               Little Green Fruit

You hang in the tree looking ripe and big
But you insist on clinging to the highest twig
Well I plead and I pray, oh how I beseech you
Tell me how on earth I can ever reach you

Little green fruit up in the tree
Little green fruit come down to me
I'm going crazy wondering what I have to do
I've got a stiff neck from waiting for you
Oh oh oh, little green fruit come down to me

Your powers of deception are beyond belief
How can such a luscious fruit look so much like a leaf
Well I give you a chop and I'm sure you drop
But when I get the bag down, you're still up the top

I know for certain if I left you there
All the birdies would flap down to get their share
You'd be pecked and rotten when you hit the ground
And for no guacamole would you be bound

©Mal Webb 2000

Anyway, welcome to the Catbox, Hankus Festus. Have fun!

Matt R, it aint necessarily so.*

For those interested in the off topic question of the slang meanings of "hook-up", check out the Same As Slang thread that I linked to in my 03 Aug 06 - 02:49 AM post.

There's a number of posts in that thread about the term "hook up". Plus that thread includes some off the hook hyperlinks that provide more info about the term "hook up" and related terms like..."off the hook".

* btw, "it aint necessarily so"=great song!

Southern Cal is a big place with a lot of different ideas about music in it. Same with Avocados: There is a majority (vast) that love 'em, and a minority (me) that hate 'em.

The folk music loving minority is further divided into segments with some hangouts for all. Where in So. CA are you? That could give us a clue as to where you might want to start your non-cyber journey.

I have fun playing at a friend's house on the second Sunday of the month (except May and October, and some years April). Several different categories of folk music lovers show up. It's in central Orange County, and they tend to be older guys (like me). Some play in cafes, some play at festivals and some can hardly play at all.

I'm in the San Fernando Valley section north of LA. On a Dylanesque mission penning a new age social protest songbook. But I'm not finding the right melodic partners. Part of US is dying. Part that cares about fixing what's wrong and saving our future. Whatever happened to profound songwriters and music that cares? Beats me.

Music stores with a specialization in "folk" instruments can be a good starting pointto meet other like-minded folks. Only one I know of in SF Valley is the Blue Ridge Pickin Parlor in Granada Hills.

Also, there's McCabes in Santa Monica. Both sponsor concerts.
