Music stores with a specialization in "folk" instruments can be a good starting pointto meet other like-minded folks. Only one I know of in SF Valley is the Blue Ridge Pickin Parlor in Granada Hills.

Southern Cal is a big place with a lot of different ideas about music in it. Same with Avocados: There is a majority (vast) that love 'em, and a minority (me) that hate 'em.

The folk music loving minority is further divided into segments with some hangouts for all. Where in So. CA are you? That could give us a clue as to where you might want to start your non-cyber journey.

I have fun playing at a friend's house on the second Sunday of the month (except May and October, and some years April). Several different categories of folk music lovers show up. It's in central Orange County, and they tend to be older guys (like me). Some play in cafes, some play at festivals and some can hardly play at all.

I had the privilege once of doing a workshop with this completely mad, clever and amazing performer - Mal Webb. His song about an avocado was one of the songs he taught us in the workshop. It has a sort of calypso rhythm. You would have to know Mal Webb to know how much fun it was!

A Google search on avacado gets about 653,000 hits. Not too shabby, and confirms that this spelling works.

Avocado on Google gets about 11,100,000 hits, meaning this is the preferred spelling.

"Neo Folk" is an oxymoron, perhaps implying that there are still choices to be made regarding this fellow's musical leanings? Mudcat can help!

Did you know avocado is a fruit, not a vegetable? It also
has the distinction of being the only fruit with saturated
fat in. I used to hate the buggers, growing as they did
native to my home town of Ventura. My papa would eat them
cut in half, over the sink, with a spoon. And make slimy
sandwiches of them. Well, tastes change, now I'm my own
grandpa and I do the same. Go figure.

Pretty scary, the process of getting the pit out of
a half with a knife. Smack, twist, your done if you
don't have the stigmata.

Was down visiting the parental units in December, got
invited out to a local ranch to view some antique farm
equipment. Going past his house the farmer pointed out
the prize avocado tree that was as big as the house,
and shaded half of it. About 60 feet in diameter, maybe
40 feet high, branches down to the ground. 'Been there
since I was a kid...prolly get coupla tons off her this
year.' Let's see, at a buck a piece in the store, that
tree was part of the GNP! Black Haas avocados, too. None
of them green guacamole monsters. If it ever threatens
the house, sacrifice the house!

That expression "neo folk tunes" is a bit ominous. But maybe that's just California-speak.

This place is whatever you want it to be really. It's not a question of either-or, it's both-and. Plus a lot more.

So do stick around; you'll find kindred spirits, maybe even living near enough for you to be able to meet and make music together, and a greta source of arcane information and people to argue with from all round the world. If you play around with the search button and it's amazing what you are likely to turn up about all kinds of stuff.

There are many folks who have "hooked up" and shared their songs, lyrics, poems, etc.here. I have had a poem, written spontaneously here, added to and sung by a woman, a professionally trained musician and performer, now a dear friend, who is originally from Scotland, now living in the US. I've had folks from North America and 'cross the pond singing their songs and trad stuff in my living room or elsewhere in person, and listened to folks from all over doing the same via a room at www.paltalk.com.

We are a lively and diverse crew of kindly, sometimes crazy/pendantic/talented/curmudgeonly/all aged people come together through their love of folk and blues music.

It's really nice that you have started out by asking instead of assuming. Thanks for that. Now that you gotten your toes wet, please join in. mp3s and lyrics are most welcome.

Hi folks:

I'm a starving artist looking for hook ups. I was wondering about this site. Is it mainly a reference tool cyber hang out or can it be used to network with other talents to form songwring partnerships?

I say this because I'm a lyricist who specializes in neo folk tunes and I wanted to post lyrics and an mp3 link to my work. Is this ok and do you think that I'll meet someone here who's on my wavelength?

Grew up back east. But it seems everyone on the left coast is either a zombie grunge airhead or an evil-is-hip gangsta rapper and I can't connect with anybody with a non primitive ear for folk message music.
