Subject: swan folk club wadebridge From: GUEST Date: 02 Aug 06 - 02:25 PM anyone remember going to Swan Folk Club Wadebridge late 1960s-70s? |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: GUEST,doc.tom Date: 02 Aug 06 - 02:54 PM Mervy's and Charlie's club? Upstairs in the long room? With Sam Treglowan as landlord? Robbie and Maureen, John Buck, Chris Ridley? Oh yes! There when it started - there when it finished. |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: The PA Date: 03 Aug 06 - 05:33 AM Would that be Mervin Vincent? Is it the same Swan thats doing a folk evening on Saturday 12th? I remember spending some really great evenings (and early mornings) with Mervin and friends whilst we were on holiday down there. |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: The PA Date: 03 Aug 06 - 05:37 AM Was there a teacher named Richard there too. He and his family spent the whole summer down there, his daughter had a really beautiful voice, would have been around 1974! Help you've really stirred up the old grey cells!! |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: GUEST,doc.tom Date: 03 Aug 06 - 03:01 PM Ah! Yes! Richard. Now interestingly enough, he's turned up for a couple of Maydays recently! And then of course, there was Pat Lapham - although that might have been before Mervyn and Charlie started the Club. Charlie is long dead, but May still lives in Padstow. Mervyn's long gone too, but Jeannie's still around - living in the trailers which are now built round into a bungalow. Charlotte's married and her family is living in Karenza. Jane's also produced and is living just down the road. And after many years in the wilderness, the Ring O Bells in St. Issey is back to being a proper local singing pub again - thanks to the new landlord Chris Ivers. 'Lanlivery men, St. Mabyn Men, St. Issey and St. Kew, But these five boys of Egloshayle could all the rest outdo.' |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: The PA Date: 04 Aug 06 - 03:15 AM Do you remember a character by the name of Sussex Sandray from Porthcothan, a great friend and rival of Mervin Vincent, also sadly no longer with us. Did you ever get to the sessions in the Tredrea Inn at Porthcothan, the lunchtimes merged into evenings when the weather was bad. This really takes me back, we still visit Padstow for our annual holidays, in fact we off next week for a few weeks. We also go for May Day every year, but did not get to the Ringers this year. My husband has a better memory than me, I have to see who he can remember |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: GUEST,sylvia wadebridge Date: 04 Aug 06 - 03:55 AM Rowena and I used to go to both Mervyns club at The Molesworth and The Swan in Wadebridge, when we sang with Larry. The club mentioned above(August 12th) will be at the Ship Inn.Please spread the word as after arranging it realised it was too close to Sidmouth and Dartmoor. The one we had last month was great.Be great to meet up with some old friends. |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: GUEST,doc.tom Date: 04 Aug 06 - 04:49 AM Sussex used to drink in Ringers too. Tredrae was alright until the May morning he refused to serve breakfast beer. Downstairs in the Swan, of course, was where the singing used to happen of a Sunday lunchtime - there you can add the old 'skeeters' group: Jack Tambo, Tony Simms, Ted(?) Roberts, not to mention dear old Hary Lightfoot. By 'Larry'I guess you mean Larry McLaughlan who arrived in '66 or '67. Lived in St. Issey for many years but has now moved out to St. Column, I believe - still singing. 'Now the dogs once had a meeting, They came fron near and far, Some they came by aeroplane and some by motor car.' |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: The PA Date: 04 Aug 06 - 04:57 AM We will be arriving in Padstow on Saturday morning 12th and are going to try our very best to get to Wadebridge for the evening. Lets hope its a good one. Will have another think of names and locations from the past, in the meantime. Will there be anything going on at the Ringers during that couple of weeks (12-26 August) ? |
Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: GUEST,Sylv Date: 05 Aug 06 - 03:31 AM Please come and say hello to us if you come to The Ship on 12th.Lots of memories to share. Certainly remember Jack Tamblyn, Tony Sim, Harry Lightfoot, Tony Ford, and singing in the Swan with them(snug) as teens! Chris who now has the Ringers sometimes has something going on. Will try to find out for you. |

Subject: RE: swan folk club wadebridge From: GUEST,doc.tom Date: 29 Aug 08 - 04:59 AM Oh! Now you're going back a bit! I seem to remember there was a photo in ED&S of Harry Lighfoot's birthday. It was submitted by Chris Ridley and had(at least):Mervyn, Maureen, Harry - damn, I'll try and find it! OK 'Guest' so who are you? Tom Brown |
