At risk of raising the demons , heard today of the death of the soprano aged 90 ! Lovely voice and a damn fine run lasting nine decades !

One of my favorite soprano singers back when I was singing and studying classical music. A short biography here. A lovely voice and a fantastic career.

I heard a tribute to her on the radio today. What a gorgeous voice! They said she never quite lived down the fact that, as a young woman (22 I think) she joined the Nazi party.

I heard a story on NPR some years ago, when great several artists were asked what five recordings they wanted to have with them if they were stranded on the proverbial desert island. Most of the artists listed eclectic seminal performances by varied other performers. Schwartzkopf named five of her own recordings. :) This may have been on a programs such as Whaddya Know? or Wait Wait! Don't Tell Me!

It was in my local newspaper in Germany this morning. I am amazed how far reaches her fame, and how moved are her admirers.

Recently I heard Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Victoria de los Angeles singing Rossini's Duet for two cats - what a hoot. Now, alas, both singers are gone.

I think virtually everyone in Germany wishing to make any kind of living in any kind of peace and security, at that time, was more or less obliged to join the Party? And, if the current Pope can get away with having done so....
Apropos mention of E.S. appearing in a Folkish site, her recording of The Air from County Derry (The Londonderry Air; okay, it was "Danny Boy" is one of the best I've ever heard, and that in a language foreign to her. I wonder would a thread on "Traditional Songs as sung by Classical Vocalists" attract much interest and debate?


Rossini must have been kept awake by vocalising felines.

For my money, the Tom and Jerry skit on concert pianists beats the rest hollow.

That Tom and Jerry cartoon won an academy award (in 1947 as a short subject, I think). And while it may seem an aside in an obit thread, it is well worth noting that cartoons are a really great place for an introduction to classical music. My kids would every so often ask me to come listen to the sound track of a cartoon and tell them what the music was because they liked it.

SRS, I remember those too, one cartoon used the overture from Die Fledermaus and I think another may have used the William Tell Overture. Or perhaps it was the Light Cavalry Overture.......!
