No surplus govt property at the giveaways, Joe. They come from my personal budget/closet with an occasional CD donation from a singer, though most of the CD's come from my purchases. That probably makes me the "crazy Eddie" of chanteydom :-). The main idea is to encourage people to learn songs, hear how recorded musicians sing them, and then bring them to the sings. As well as hopefully inspiring them to dig deeper into the traditions for their own knowlege. I started adding other misc. items for the special occasions, saving the juicer and the scanner for the big 25th anniversary sing. I throw in the occasional gag gift, too, just for fun.

I have to say that the chantey sing door prizes are just about the dorkiest raffles the world has even seen. It's part of the charm of the chantey sing, though.
I wish I had had something like that when I had to get rid of surplus property from MY government office. You know how hard it is to give away an electric typewriter nowadays? I didn't have any juicers or out-of-date scanners to give away when I closed my office - maybe that would have helped.
Anyhow, the drawing sure is corny - and it sure is fun.

So where are the pictures??

My only complaint is that I never got to hear anyone elses set. Between the 12-1 ex-ranger set with Rev and Peter, our 2-3 dogwatch set and then the 4-5 Closing set the day was over. In between sets all I did was try to get my kids fed and run back and forth to the heads with them. ;)

Really wish I could have heard some of other folks sets. And of course my other favorite is pickup sets with others in out of the way spots. A One day festival just went by too fast.

Peter, next year maybe we could chip in to pay the parks solar bill so its not so cold and windy, how about moving the festival to a warmer season like mid January?

Oh, I almost forgot, there were no Coast Guard Helicopters hovering over us while we sand this year? It just didn't feel the same...

It was actually about the same number of local musicians as last year. There was a much larger budget then, so musicians from Europe and from across the country were booked, with music on four stages (this year two stages). Without the musivians from afar it must have seemed like there were more locals. We've got a thriving local sea music community, so it was a very good lineup.

It was a great weekend! I was glad I remembered to dress warmly. Musically and energywise I think it was better than last year. I too like the fact that it was more local musicians. You know with all this Disney Pirates stuff going on I think the time is right for a resurgance of the Bay Area sea music scene. I was impressed at how many people were at the chantey sing for the first time. I hope that next year there's enough of a budget to build on that energy.

I've got plans for one! I even made a pentatonic 3-string cookie-tin banjo once (using the dulcimer plans for the neck) but I messed up on the tuners and only two of the strings were playable. Have you seen this link?

His $20 hurdy-gurdy looks impressive, and would probably be about right for the Pier. I imagine a lot of sailors made any instrument they might have owned, and it would probably end up looking pretty similar.

My thanks to all the musicians and volunteers that made this festival the fine day it was. Mudcatters Radriano, Riggy, yrlancslad, Musique174, Rev, and Salty Walt were among the performers. Melani, BillR, and open mike volunteered with various jobs (Melani emceed all the morning acts at the forepier stage), and,as you know ftrom their posts, Joe Offer with his lovely wife, ClaireBear, Sourdough, and Guest Jim and his bandmates were there. The evening chantey sing aboard the ferryboat Eureka,the 25th anniversary of the sing, drew a little over 260 people.

Plus, this year they revived the boat building challenge and race, and it was a total hoot! For those of you who didn't see it, the object is to build a small boat in one day, any design, and then race them at the end of the day. Only one of the three didn't capsize, but that one actually didn't win! (It's legal to swim around the course, towing you craft--or what's left of it.) The one that capsized first won on points.

Now maybe an instrument-building contest, and play them at the chantey sing...;-)

The festival was great fun but my voice starting dropping out during the last part of my set with Chanteyranger. It was a drag because I had to bow out of the big on-stage shanty sing at the end of the festival and, even more disappointing, I missed the shanty sing that evening. I had to opt for going home early and nursing my throat.

It's so nice to go to San Francisco and not be a stranger, to see old friends and make new ones - and to make wonderful music. We took one more walk on the pier this morning - when the sun was SHINING! We also had time for a nice chat with Malcolm this morning - much less hectic than yesterday, but without the music.
Thanks for all the work you put into this, Peter. Melanie and Malcolm and Radiano and a number of other friends also put in a lot of work.
Jim, I understand the park has a budget deficit, and the superintendant is tightening things up. I hope she doesn't shoot herself in the foot with her cutbacks, but I have to say I really liked listening to local talent this year, since they're mostly old friends - maybe it would be good to have out-of-town talent every two or three years, and give the locals the stage otherwise.

Also just back from the chanty sing. All in all, a great day. My sea music group wasn't one of the "official" performers, but we showed up and sang anyway, mostly on the Balcutha since there wasn't a stage there this year. I hung out until the sing and boy was it great. Revel was there, bringing back the time I was a newbie at the sings. I saw a bunch of faces in the crowd that I haven't seen in a while. They were all very into it, and the choruses were wonderful -- and I for one needed the help after singing out in the wind all day.

It was also nice to put a face to the name of Joe Offer. I'd like to know why the budget seems so limited compaired to years past, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the day much. Anyway, off to bed.

Just back from there--yawn--and I had such fun! I really liked the all-local-performers approach that was taken this year. Chanteyranger and Radriano were wonderful (as were many other performers), and somehow in the several years that I've been (mostly) away from the chantey sings, a whole new crop of material -- and singers -- has developed, a thing very cheering to my soul. Note to self: must learn some new chanteys...

Plus, I got to meet the debonaire Joe Offer (along with several other Catters of renown), chat with Yrlancslad and Open Mike, and snuggle between Riggy and Radriano for the Mudcat photo op. All in all, quite the perfect day, Now, must sleep. TTFN

I'd stomp out. Right over everybody, from the center of the
keelson, much to the amusement of many and the horror of
some. Out and up the ladder.

Now...I can't stand the damned thing. Don't know why, but I
can't. And it started getting round that I couldn't.

But the REAL reason I stomped off was because it was the only
way *I* could get a break. During the "break", because I kind
of played second fiddle to Celeste, everyone and anyone who
wanted to talk about what was going on would 'pigeonhole' me
which meant I got to neither piss nor get some of Alice's cider
to lubricate my larynx.

So what was *really* happening was that I was 'holding the fort'
during the break (and re-starting the sing at the end of the
break, once Celeste got back from said liquid pursuits) and
then taking MY break during the song I 'hated.' It just sort
of evolved that way as a running joke. At some point I figured
that it was easier to get out that way for a break in the 4-hour
program than it was to try and 'sneak' out from 'center stage'
which was impossible.

If anyone remembers the antics of Derek Bell when he was
with the Chieftains (rest his soul) it was that sort of thing.

It's tomorrow! Weather forecast is for cloudy and windy. Dress warmly, as you would on a ship :-). Celeste couldn't get away from her park superintendent responsibilities at New Bedford, but will be there in spirit. As for what we'll do at the "The Chantey Sing Rangers" set, Rev, I thought we'd start with "Moon River," then move into "I'm Going To Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair," "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Heas," "Surfin' USA," .....(Rev, Gary Keep and I will actually have a "whole shipload" of chanteys and a few forebitters, favorites sung at the chantey sings over the years).

It promises to be a alot of fun for kids as well, so bring the family. Kids crafts, music, lots of hands-on activities. Check the website Joe provided. Thanks, Joe.

The program flyer that will be handed out lists the evening chantey sing as happening aboard the sailing ship Balclutha, its normal home until the Thayer's return. The sing will actually be aboard the ferryboat Eureka.

Anglo, you underestimate the ability of NPS employees to get
pissy and petty and to respond by fouling up somebody's job
(or worse) in the face of any sort of real or imagined or
concocted conflict of interest.

Peter is right to choose other outlets for his recordings.

Hi, Jim. I keep my CD sales/promotion completely separate from my job, so you didn't miss any announcement at the sing. They are not sold at the festival or at any other time in the Maritime Store.

To renew your membership, just go to "reset cookie" from the menu. It just takes a few seconds.....or maybe your computer is not responding to that?

Saturday, September 9, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park celebrates its annual Festival of the Sea, at Hyde Street Pier on SF's Fisherman's Wharf, 10am-5pm. We're known as "America's floating national park." There'll be Living History shipboard demonstrations, a boatbuilding competition, maritime library book sale, theatre, kids crafts, storytelling, iron forging demos plus other events, and sea music performed by Bay Area musicians on two stages. At 8pm we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the park's monthly chantey sing! The sing will be held aboard the historic ferryboat Eureka (normally it's held aboard a sailing ship, but the ferry can accomodate the larger than usual numbers anticipated). The sings began in the late 70's, intermittently, and then became a regulasr park sponsored propgram in 1981. Ranger Dave Nettell was present at the creation and ran the sings until 1989. The other rangers hosting it: Celeste Bernardo (1989-92), Revell Carr (1992-96, who will be here from SoCal, performing during the day as well) and myself (1996-present). Rangers Gary Keep (1980's, also performing in the Dogwatch Nautical Band) and Kathy Daskal (2002-present) assist. The heart and soul of the sings, though, are the hundreds of participants who have kept and continue to keep alive the singing traditions of sailors, stevedores, and fishermen. Volunteers are needed for variety of tasks, including instrument check (half hour shifts), gate greeters, cook assistants (for the evening volunteer/performer/staff meal), and various other logistical tasks as needed.
