Subject: Lyr Add: FromaÄ쳌' el Edamo
From: Haruo
Date: 11 Aug 06 - 02:57 PM

While I was in Vermont last month, I learned the following rather absurd song, and am wondering if it is an Esperanto original or if it has otherlanguagely antecedents.

FromaÄ쳌’ el Edamo
Text (Esperanto) by Raymond Schwartz
Music by Franz Winkler
Transcribed from a recording by Claude and Nicole Piron

Li estis maristo fidela,
kiu post longa vojaÄ쳌’
al la fianĉino en hejma vilaÄ쳌’
revenis kun bulo da fromaÄ쳌’…

â€œ FromaÄ쳌’ el Edamo â€" Ä쳌i estu por vi
     pri mia amo la garanti’.
Konservu Ä쳌in pie, sub silka paper’,
kaj Ä쳌in vidante pensu pri mi dum vesper’ ! â€쳌

Sed nia maristo tuj devis
iri por nova vetur’,
kaj lia fraŭlino kun plora murmur’
promesis per plej solena ĵur’ :

â€œ FromaÄ쳌’ el Edamo, mi ĵuras al vi,
ke mia amo nur estos li.
Mi gardos vin pie, Ä쳌is mia amant’
revenos por edziÄ쳌i el transmara land’.â€쳌

Kaj ĉiu matene, fidele,
al la fromaÄ쳌’ sur bufed’,
Å쳌i portis du vazojn kun freÅ쳌a buked’

distranĉis la fromaÄ쳌on kaj formanÄ쳌is Ä쳌in!...

A rough, unsingable englishing â€" in Esperanto it scans and rhymes and all that stuff, though the story line is just this ridiculous:

He was a faithful sailor,
who after a long voyage
to his fiancée in his home village
returned with a ball of cheese…

â€œ Cheese of Edam â€" may it be for thee
     of my love the guarantee
Conserve it piously, beneath silky paper,
and seeing it, think of me in the evenings ! â€쳌

But our sailor at once had to
go on a new trip,
and his gal with weeping murmur
promises with a most solemn oath :

â€œ Cheese of Edam, I swear it to thee,
that my love shall only be he.
I'll guard you piously, until my lover
returns to marry me from a land across the sea.â€쳌

And every morning, faithfully,
to the cheese on the buffet,
she brought two vases with a fresh bouquet
just stolen from a neighboring flowerbed...

â€œCheese of Edam, you'll stay for me
     of his love the guarantee
     I joyfully recognize his face's
dear features now in this cheese...â€쳌

But her sailor perished
- alas! - in the wave of the sea...
She learned of it without forewarning
only through a form telegram...

â€œCheese of Edam, our fate has struck:
     here's a telegram about his death...â€쳌
     Torrentially weeping the good miss
took knife to the cheese and ate it up!...

The characters look more-or-less correct in Firefox if you go to "View" and have character encoding set to Unicode. Trouble is, when I went back to this page, Unicode was shut off in favor of "Western." Guess I'll try setting it to "autodetect/universal." That seems to work-for now.
Haruo, I changed the title to RE: Lyr Add: Fromag' el Edamo, which is about as close as I can come to the title of the song, using normal characters. We don't allow special characters in thread titles because it screws up searching and other functions.
By the way - I like the song, now that I can read it.

Yeah, I remembered that after it was too late. Thanks, Joe.

How `bout re-posting it so we can read it?
Michael, go to "view" on your browser and select "unicode" under "encoding" - is it still garbled?

Ah, mo' betta. The subtleties of computing... Now will there be other things I can't read in unicode?

Great song! I love a good Edamer. What vintage is it?

Cheers,
Michael

Do cheeses (aside from Port Salut ;-) ) come in vintages? So does it have a source (text or tune or both) in some French or Dutch song? Or is it (as I hope) an Esperanto original?

BTW Peace thanks for the URL of the Claude Piron site; not sure why my googling didn't find that.

You would have thought not, but only about two weeks ago at work I was reading through a data file and it had a character that read as ¬ in ASCII but simply didn't appear at all in Unicode. As it was in the middle of a huge file, I'm afraid I didn't get into dumping the file in hex to work out what was going on.

OK, this is getting silly. My message above looks as I intended it in UNICODE, but gains an a-circumflex in Western.

A couple of years back of years back we took the ducklings to see the stage show of "Bear in the Big Blue House" (Disney/Henson puppets).
One of the songs featured in the show was the Emmentaler Chorus. :-
"Oh Emmental, Emmental, holiest of cheeses..."

Quack!
GtD.

Thank you, Haruo. I found that site (and the Schwartz site (BTW) with a Google of

"Li estis maristo fidela"

with the quotation marks.

Neat melody. People will write about anything. Neat song. Thanks for posting it.

The Claude Piron site only has the first verse. I've posted the entire thing here in mp3.
