Subject: RE: Elki Brooks & Robert Palmer From: Geordie-Peorgie Date: 12 Aug 06 - 01:45 PM Great track on their first album (lots really) called 'Early One Morning' Elk does a sax solo on vocals - Abso-bleedin'-lutely amazin' Aah had it on cassette and it wore oot - Tried to download from a num ber of MP3 sites but nowt available Does anybody remember Elkie's first appearance on 'Ready Steady Go'? Singing a love song a la Cilla Black - Somebody in the audience booed her! She's done canny for hersel' since mind! D'ye knaah she was a sister to the guitarist in The Dakotas - Billy J Kramer's band - Consequently she was managed by Brian Epstein for a short while Aah wrote a parody of 'Pearl's A Singer' Here it is Pearl's a minger And they say she eats blokes like me for dinner I should be so lucky Pearl's a minger And they say that she once broke a record She had the local rugby club in a big Jacuzzi tub She stayed for hours She wanted to be Nicole Kidman Now she's lucky if she pulls the bin men Her looks and figure have long petered out of sight She looks best in the dead of the night Pearl's a minger She stands up when she has a bloke in 'er Two or three of them a night And they see her home alright To the Hostel Pearl's a minger |
Subject: RE: Elki Brooks & Robert Palmer From: fat B****rd Date: 12 Aug 06 - 02:47 PM Actually (Charlie Anorak here) Elkie (Elaine Bookbinder) is the suster of the Dakotas drummer. I first saw her doing a creditable cover of Etta James's "Something's Got A Hold On Me" on TV. I saw VInegar Joe and they were pretty good n'all. |
Subject: RE: Elki Brooks & Robert Palmer From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 13 Aug 06 - 02:56 AM Roger Cardigan here. First saw Elkie singing with Humphrey Lyttelton band, saw her with her own band last year- still got it! Her uncle was a labour councillor in Derbyshire or Staffordshire. RtS |
Subject: RE: Elki Brooks & Robert Palmer From: alanabit Date: 13 Aug 06 - 03:50 AM I saw her singing with Humphrey Littleton again back in the seventies. There was a small jazz/blues event appended to the main festival. A nice afternoon it was too. |

Subject: RE: Elki Brooks & Robert Palmer From: Ritchie Date: 14 Aug 06 - 04:57 PM What a coincidence, the week before last I was in 'Flip' a second hand clothing store in Newcastle and I got chatting with the owner a John Woods. We were talking about music and somehow I mentioned Robt Palmer. John went on to tell me how he was the drummer for Vinegar Joe and roomed with Robt. He went on to tell me some great tales about Elkie et all. RWJ if you are up in Newcastle drop in and see him for a chat, he's a 'cracking' bloke. He plays with the Junco Partners a more than local R & B band, of whom, it must be said, have a lot of promise ;-) nice to see the blues rear it's ugly head on this site occasionally :-) |
