This week only (ending August 12 2006) RTE Radio 1 is broadcasting Theobald Wolfe Tone's diaries - witty and incisive, as he describes his growing sense of nationality, and his work in France with Napoleon on behalf of Ireland, until the point at which he was murdered by Britain.

Sorry, should have mentioned that Tone's diaries are an indispensible background to any performance of songs of Irish freedom.

Tone, a Northern Protestant (or rather Dissenter) died, allegedly of cutting his own throat, while awaiting execution by the British, after a life spent fighting for a free, independent, republican and egalitarian Ireland.
