OK, OK, so I'm going to toot my own horn! The announcement here is that Jeff Warner is about to embark upon his next Autumn-in-England tour - 25 Aug to 16 Sept, 2006. This time, I (Barbara) am able to be with him for some of the gigs, and am tooting my own horn about that in the hopes that some of my new UK pals will be able to turn out to see us - and sing along in lusty tones!

Some of the parts of the country that Jeff has gigs in are Cornwall, Manchester area, Bath, Hastings, Sussex and London. So if you're not too far from any of those places, check the complete schedule at his website "Performances" page:
www.jeffwarner.com

I'll be flying over from Finland (still doing my "walkabout!") for two weeks, and will be able to join Jeff for the Hastings, Sussex and London dates. I would LOVE to see some of my new UK comrades, met in April/May of this year at Upton Fest and at Fox & Hounds. SussexCarole? Crane Driver? Cats? Steve and Ali? Hey! Micca, too! Anybody out there?? I met so many, and of course, the Mudcat names have gone right out of my head!

For those who can't quite remember right now why his name looks familiar, Jeff is the son of Frank and Anne Warner, eminent collectors of American folk songs from the 1930s to the 1950s. He plays banjo, guitar and concertina, as well as small "pocket-instruments" and sings primarily traditional American songs in acoustic performance. For years, he worked with Jeff Davis, but has been more-or-less a solo artist for the past 7 or 8 years.

Jeff's gigs are definitely his own show, but when I'm involved, generally I come in for the last 3 or 4 songs in each set, singing harmony or lead, depending on the arrangement.

In September of last year, we co-produced Jeff's first solo CD (and I sing on it, as well), which has now been favorably reviewed by Sing Out!, Dirty Linen, Penguin Eggs, and fRoots. A previous Mudcat thread about that is here:

thread.cfm?threadid=84273

At the risk of tooting my horn both loud and shrill, I'll run along now. It would be great to see some familiar faces out there, though!

It's good to hear from Barbara, how goes the walkabout & how are your dogs feeling? Have you been getting in trouble & where have you been singing?

"Last 3 or 4 songs"? That's all. You folks that haven't heard Barbara will want to catch her (I'm sure most of you already know Jeff) & for more than just 3 or 4 songs too.

Take good care of them, we want them back in better shape than when we let them go.

Barbara, where do you plan to go from there & are you still coming back? Take your time & enjoy.

Barry

Hey Barbara, great to hear from you!
If any gal can toot her own horn, it's this one.
Sounds like good times. I hope you have lots
of good visiting and singing.

Oops - put my reply on the other thread. How stupid can you get! If we can catch him at wadebridge we will but we are playing that weekend at the Lost gardens of Heligan with the very last Unsung Heroes.

We miss Barbara's singing in our Sea Music Circle at the Press Room. Go and see her and Jeff so she makes enough money to fly back here.

She has a strong throaty voice and provides distinctive harmonies to Jeff's singing.

Make them sing "Little Black Train" from Warner's most recent CD, THE JOLLY TINKER.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Hi Barbara, checked Jeff's performance list & it looks like we're not going to be able to come along at all *sigh* Would have been great to see/hear you again & also to hear Jeff, but it's not to be unless you're passing Leatherhead at all & can visit. Have a great time & safe journeys Honey!

Barbara! Sounds like you've been having a wonderful time. Jolly Tinker is a superb CD - you're quite right to 'toot your own horn'. Oh how I wish we could get to see you at Lewes - my old stamping ground - but it's just a way too far to travel. Perhaps we may meet up on your home ground when we are over in Oct/Nov for the Getaway. If there's any chance of us getting to the Press Room - we'll be there.

To anyone who hasn't heard Barbara sing........try and get to one of their gigs - this lady has a tremendous voice.

HA! You wrote back!! Thanks, all!

Sarah - We have a night off? HAHA! I look forward to meeting you then! I think you are Hampshire, yes?

Barry - I'm in Stockholm now, headed for Finland at the end of the week. From Helsinki, I go to England, then back to Helsinki to take the ferry to Tallinn, Estonia. I hope for a month in the 3 Baltic countries, and then? I dunno! That's part of the beauty of it!!
And Get In Trouble? I don't get in trouble. But the guy did who maniacally hurled three full bottles of beer to the tiled floor of the Systembolaget (state-controlled liquor store) yesterday because they were tossing him out for being drunk on the premises! I only WATCH trouble.

Kathy - How I wish I could have caught one of your performances! I heard/read more about the Lost Gardens after you told me all about it. Best of luck with the final "Unsung." Oh, and no, I'm not at Wadebridge... I don't arrive until a week later.

Hilary - It looks like the closest we'll get is Lewes or London, and that's NOT close! Rats. It would have been fun, for sure!

Carole and Andrew - You two have GOT to visit our happy little Press Room. Speaking of fun - that's where you'll find it in the Northeast! I don't know at this point whether I'll be home by then or not. Either way, I really hope you get to visit our "local."

Thanks for all the kind comments and well-wishes, everyone! Nice to hear from you all. Tell your UK-based friends and fellow-singers to come to one of Jeff's gigs! ESPECIALLY MICCA - ahem!!

Get to one of these gigs if you possibly can. Jeff's CD is one of the best I've come across in years, and Barbara sings some great harmonies on it. I wish I could be there myself, but I will be back home in Canada.

Barbara,

Sounds like you've sure been making some good friends.
No surprise there. And the great adventure continues...
I wish I could be a fly on your shoulder.

I'll miss you at the Portsmouth Maritime Music Fest this year.
Tom and Linn and have invited me over, in a official way this year!

Folks, Barbara's right - there's great fun and singing to be found
in the Press Room! That's where I first heard her quite memorable voice. Catch Jeff's shows in the UK, and enjoy singing along with
the two of them. Thought provoking repretoir and ear catching harmonies!

peace, Pamela

Friends of Jeff Warner may like to know that his tour overlaps with one by his former musical partner, the equally wonderful Jeff Davis. Tour dates in England are;

August 2006
30: Uppermill, Cross Keys http://jimfolk.users.btopenworld.com/

September 2006
1: Birmingham, Black Diamond Folk Club http://www.btinternet.com/~radical/diamond/
2: Fylde Folk Festival http://www.fylde-folk-festival.com
4: Stockport, Red Bull http://www.stockportfolk.co.uk
7: Lewes, Royal Oak Folk Club http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tinvic/
8-9: Hastings, Sweet Sunny South Festival http://www.sweetsunnysouth.co.uk/home.html
10: Walthamstow,The Plough Inn, Wood St, Walthamstow http://www.walthamstowfolk.co.uk/

I should be able to see them both on consecutive days!

Thank you for this notice, Henry. Correct you are, Jeff Davis is touring at the same time as Jeff Warner this Aug & Sept. Not unexpectedly, since the music they play comes from roughly the same "pool," the places that hire one Jeff one year will hire the other Jeff the other year - or season.

But at the Sweet Sunny South Festival in Hastings (which you listed above), BOTH of the Jeffs are in attendance! And at Lewes Royal Oak club, it's consecutive weeks of Jeffs - first Davis, then Warner.

So for all you fans of American trad who ever enjoyed Jeff & Jeff, now's your chance to see them almost-together again!! I'm looking forward to this very much, myself. It should be a really good blast of Americana!

Hi Barbara,

You and Jeff are invited to Llantrisant Folk Club, where the guests are the stunning and fabulous Gypsy Reel. Pat's putting them up, so how about dinner and stopover with Olly and me for the night - any preferences?

Pat has already booked Jeff for his next summer tour, but Jeff did say you were on Gower for the 6th - a beautiful place, full of tradition. The spirit of Phil Tanner still walks with his songs, ballads and lilting mouth-music... depending where on Gower you are, it will take you 40 minutes, or one hour, to drive to Llantrisant up the M4 motorway - leave at Junction 34. Directions will come later.

Well, Jeff's completed the first task on his list: workshops and concerts at Cornwall Folk Festival. He's currently at a club near Macclesfield, and on Wednesday coming, 6 Sept, we'll both be VISITING (not performing) at Llantrisant Folk Club (Clwb Gwerin Llantrisant) in Wales, near Cardiff. The guests that night are Gypsy Reel, from Vermont. If anyone can pop in and see the show and say hello and visit for a while, it would be great!

Llantrisant Folk Club, Wednesday at 8.30pm, in The Windsor Hotel, Pontyclun.

See you there?

I hope the tour is fab!
Wish I could be there with you.

Sweet Sunny South was great!! Jeff and Jeff joined each other for their individual sets and sat in on each others' workshops, helping out here and there. And I got to sing my one or two or six songs. A great success!!
Next stop: Lewes on Thursday coming, the 14th, at the Royal Oak. Some people from Sweet Sunny South are going to be there. Maybe some Mudcatters, too?
Last stop: London on Saturday... check Jeff's site for details.
Barbara

Hi Barbara - you guys were great at Sweet Sunny South. I've only just seen this thread - I didn't realise we had a Mudcatter at the festival. I was the guy playing banjo next to Jeff on Saturday night in the bar, after the gig.
Enjoy what's left - I'll see you guys again some time
Ray
