Subject: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 15 Aug 06 - 10:15 PM Hi fellow mudcatters and folkies. If you can make it I warmly invite you to a " Folk Day at The Sair " on Sat 9 Sept. Muppets coming so why not join us for a reight good do. The Sair is a 300 year old Inn in Linthwaite, in the Colne Valley, near Huddersfield, up a steep hill called Hoyle Ing, off the A62 which runs from Huddersfield to Manchester. It is also a micro brewery serving up to 10 home brewed beers and stouts on hand pumps (from 3.6 to 8.6 strength!) as well as very fine and specialist lagers and ciders. It has 4 very distinct and seperate rooms which are ideal for doing your own thing, be it sing-arounds or musician sessions. It has stone or wood floors with pews and the juke box will be switched off all day! Proceedings start at 12.00 noon with morris dancing till about 5.00pm but singing and playing is very much encouraged throughout the day and well into the dying embers of the night. There is no camping available but campervans and caravans can be accomodated over night on streets very near to The Sair. If you PM me we can also probably put people up for the night in houses within a short distance of The Sair. I help Ron Crabtree, the owner of The Sair, to organise this annual event and would love as many musicians and singers as possible to turn up and make this day something really special. You are all very welcome and will be made very welcome indeed. Hope to see you on Sat 9th September. Chris |

Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: dozy rozy Date: 16 Aug 06 - 03:31 PM So come along and see us. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: nutty Date: 16 Aug 06 - 03:41 PM The road up to the Sair is a really scarey 1 in 3 so make sure your vehicle brakes work well. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: John J Date: 16 Aug 06 - 03:48 PM This sounds a no-no for my caravan then! Any sites nearby..cycling distance? John |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 16 Aug 06 - 03:58 PM Sorry; dozy rozy and Helen also help to make sure that this event is a great success and put on some stonkingly good food so that dancers and singers/musicians can keep body and soul together during what is for many a long session from noon till late. The hill is steep at the bottom where it joins Manchester Road but I still don't think it is quite in the 1 in 3 category! I anyone decides to stay overnight in a campervan etc there are roads in an adjacent residential area that are flat or flattish where you can park up. There is also a little park further up the hill from the Sair that you can drive into, but the entrance is a bit narrow so would be no good for massive campervans or cars pulling a caravan. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 16 Aug 06 - 04:11 PM John J. There are no caravan sites nearby within cycling distance but as mentioned above there are level roads running off the hill to the Sair which will be fine to use because most residents park their cars on their drive, leaving the road clear. There is also plenty of parking areas on the main road (Gilroyd Lane) that runs above the Sair, which runs passed Colne valley High School and Church Lane, by Linthwaite Church. These are just a five minute walk to the Sair. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: muppett Date: 17 Aug 06 - 04:19 AM The Sair event is a definate must, placed neatly in the events calender between Whitby & Otley festivals, if last year's event was owt to go by then this year should be a humdinger of a do. Yep there is a steep hill to it, but it worth it for the beer and Helen & Dozy rozy's grub alone, The spinach Curry has to be tried. So if you can make it come along. (There Soldier boy I'll collect my fee when I see you in Whitby next week) |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Geoff the Duck Date: 17 Aug 06 - 05:41 AM A pub worth visiting and landlord Ron Crabtree is a character. Haven't bee there for about 9 years sinece I stopped editing Bradford CAMRA's publication, Tyke Taverner. Quack! Geoff. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 17 Aug 06 - 08:35 AM Nice one Muppett and thanks Geoff the Duck. It sounds to me , Mr Duck , that it is high time that you paid the Sair a visit again. So are you coming? I want to see the reaction of the friendly locals etc to seeing a chap drinking out of a tankard with a yellow plastic duck floating on top of the beer. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 17 Aug 06 - 07:34 PM By the way. I forgot to mention that we are still seeking more Morris dancing sides to join us for the day. Things start at about 12.00 noon (approximately!) and dancing will continue till about 4.30/5.00pm. Thereafter, and during the day, it's a case of getting snuggly in the Sair playing or singing your hearts out to your hearts content. If you are a Morris side (from all persuasions) you will be very welcome indeed to join us on the day. Free food will be served to you for your valient efforts. If you are not a Morris dancer but have connections with someone who is please pass this invite on and ask them to PM me. The more the merrier! Many thanks Chris |

Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: GUEST,Rambler Date: 19 Aug 06 - 10:36 AM I happened upon this folk day at this inn last year and stayed till the end. Great pub interior for sessions, great range of micro brewery beers ( about 10 different beers and porters, out of which only 6 were still on at the end of the night!), great people, great singers and musicians ('Muppett' and 'The Free sandwiches' folk band were the stars!). Roll on 9th Sept, it's a great day at The Sair. |

Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: GUEST,Little Musgrave Date: 21 Aug 06 - 05:29 AM Am changing the strings on the old geetar as we speak..... Those who have posted are indeed right, it was great last year. I went last year as a) it's local to me b)there was the promise of 'free sandwiches'. I was only slightly disappointed to find that 'free sandwiches is actually an excellent 3 piece folk 'n' klezmer 'n' everything else band. See you all there.... |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: GUEST,Soldier boy Date: 28 Aug 06 - 08:35 PM Very good feed back about the Folk day at The Sair in Whitby last week and many thanks to Partridge and Dozy rozy for doing a brilliant job to help me to spread the word. Definately lots of Mudcatters will be checking their diaries and will be hoping they can come. |

Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: GUEST,comer-inner Date: 31 Aug 06 - 01:09 PM This was a brilliant day last year. I arrived about 2.00pm intending to stay for an hour or so and ended up staying till the end. I even joined in with the singing, which was a first for me! |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Partridge Date: 31 Aug 06 - 03:39 PM I cannot recommend this day enough, not only is the beer brilliant, the company surpasses it. Looking forward to meting you all again. love Pat x |

Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Richard Bridge Date: 31 Aug 06 - 06:27 PM Sounds excellent but much too far to go and a 'vanning problem too. Oh, and it clashes with my mother-out-law's birthday party too. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 31 Aug 06 - 06:42 PM Thanks Partridge and dozy rozy. Sweet babes. Bless you. Richard Bridge, there are no vanning problems - plenty of roads nearby where you can campervan overnight. Hope you enjoy your mother-out-laws party do but you are missing out on a very special occasion. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: fi_in_nz Date: 31 Aug 06 - 07:11 PM We'll be there, and my sis is coming up from Brighton. Finley might even give us a toot on the whistle if we're really lucky. Jamie has the whole day off and will no doubt be bringing whistle, banjos and voice, but he doesn't have a geetar at the moment (he was borrowing one and has had to leave it in the last house and his is in NZ), so loan him one if you want a rollicking version of Listoonvarna. I'm sure all of Whitby will be there if D-R has done the PR job I'd expect of her. ;-) F |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 31 Aug 06 - 07:52 PM Nice one fi in nz. There are always the spare 'session' guitars available in The Sair. |

Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Mrs.Duck Date: 01 Sep 06 - 06:51 PM Do they allow kids in? We've already got number one son babysitting this weekend can't imagine he'd agree to two in a row! |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: GUEST Date: 01 Sep 06 - 07:28 PM I've never known a problem with kids.Bring em along. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 01 Sep 06 - 08:08 PM Thanks dozy rozy, Partridge and Mrs Duck. Ron crabtree, landlord at The sair, has no embargoes about children at The sair, so long as they are well behaved and under control and not running about under everyones feet and not too noisey. But I do think that all children should be tucked up in bed by 10.00pm at the LATEST to allow grown ups to chill out and enjoy the rest of the night so they can relax and enjoy themselves. Hope this answers your question. Chris xx |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 02 Sep 06 - 10:57 AM Only one week to go! |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: GUEST,comer-inner Date: 04 Sep 06 - 01:07 PM It's worth going just for 'The Free Sandwiches'! Also, because of the excellent layout of this old Inn, musicians and singers can get cosy in the good-sized no smoking room ( a perfect 'session' room) whilst The Free Sandwiches band do their stuff in the evening. There is also another large seperate room at the top end of the pub which means you can have a full musicians session in one room and a dedicated sing-around in another room. I am not a CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) member but the pub and it's micro-brewery real ales are so good that in 1997 it was voted NATIONAL CAMRA PUB OF THE YEAR. It is always in the Good Pub and Good Beer guides ( look up 'The Sair' or 'Linfit Brewery') and all its ales are fully CASK MARQUE accredited. It is worth coming to The Folk Day just to check out and explore the pub and it's ales. (I'll take my commision in beer tokens thanks landlord!) |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 04 Sep 06 - 09:48 PM Just to confirm, the morris sides coming to The Folk Day at The Sair are Kirkburton Rapiers and Powderkeg border morris team who will be strutting their stuff between 12.30 and about 4.30pm. Both are really good sides with lots of vibrant colour and character. You'll love 'em. During the day and thereafter will be cosy sessions of musicians and singers doing their bit inside The Sair until the dying embers. Not forgetting "The Free Sandwiches" folk band in the evening. Once seen and heard - never forgotten! It's a family event so all kids are welcome but all children should be out of The Sair by 9.00pm so grown ups can chill out and enjoy. See you Saturday. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 05 Sep 06 - 02:46 AM hi all will try to make it at some point but have to do some guided tours during the afternoon and have a birthday party to go to at night if I dont get there have a great time Sair is a great pub and beer fantastic - get yourselves there!! |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 05 Sep 06 - 11:55 AM Thanks Red and White Rabbit. why not divert your guided tours to The Sair? I'm sure your groups would be delighted. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: dozy rozy Date: 05 Sep 06 - 05:24 PM The rule about children in the Sair is not hard and fast.Ron the landlord has always welcomed families and relies on the discretion of the parents regarding time to leave. Please feel welcome to bring them along. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 05 Sep 06 - 08:29 PM Quite agree dozy rozy but I still maintain that children should not overstay their welcome in a pub and should be not be seen and should not be heard after 9.00pm. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: Soldier boy Date: 05 Sep 06 - 08:35 PM Especially when children in the Sair always seem to end up in the smoking parts of the pub and not in the no-smoking room. Surely this is bad for young kids. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: dozy rozy Date: 06 Sep 06 - 01:09 AM Sorry, but that is your opinion and not Rons. And if you cared so much about the effects of smoking on the little darlings you would stop smoking yourself. So to recap. There is no hard and fast rule regarding children.Anyone in doubt should contact the landlord, Ron Crabtree. |
Subject: RE: Invite 9 sept - Folk Day at The Sair From: dozy rozy Date: 06 Sep 06 - 08:43 AM And another thing, you old misery guts. You become more like the childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by the minute. |
