I can hear to corrections to the lyrics.

'Two old men had a big row, one caught the other one lovin his cow.'. As graphic as it sounds I'm pretty sure that's what he said and that's why Bob Wills didn't include that verse but borrowed part of it for What's the matter with the mill'. This is also probably why Hobbs and Cox stayed relatively obscure

The other line I'm pretty sure is 'if she don't let my oozler be their gonna have to lay a lily on me., in other words she'll screw him to death and they put a lily on his grave

Now that you point it out, Guest, I reckon you are spot on. It's amazing how clearly one can hear a blurred line when someone indicates exactly what it is! Well done! It is possibly why the stanza was omitted in the Wills version.

Here are the differences that I hear from your transcription.

In the 'Lord, lord ...' lines both Cox and Wills versions have an 'I' in every instance: 'Lord, lord I got them ...'

Stanza 4, line 1:

'Two old MEN in a great big row'

For the curious word in line 2, I hear 'lovingest'


Stanza 5, lines 1 and 2:

I know the lawyers will get by
For they all know how to lie


Stanza 6, line 1:

But the preacher man he's the worst of all


Stanza 7, line 2:

She can oozle easy, fast or slow


Stanza 8, line 2 - as 12-Stringer says:

They're gonna have to lay a LILY on me


Stanza 10, line 2 - this is much clearer in the Wills version:

MARRY me a flapper for my wife.


Cox has a yodel and instrumental after every second stanza.

I just noticed an interesting lyric anomaly.
the last verse of the lyric, as I transcribed it, mentions a flapper. I had thought flappers were long gone by the end of the 30's.
Perhaps this song has a longer history than the Delmores.

The Wills version omits the verse about lawyers/preachers, and I believe also the pair about old maids, but otherwise the lyrics are the same as in the Cox and Hobbs. I doubt this was written by the Delmore Bros, though it is a spinoff from "Browns Ferry Blues." It's dirtier than anything Alton Delmore ever put his name on.

This is a pretty quick instance of covering, since the Cox and Hobbs record was issued near the end of May 1937, while the Wills recording was made on 9 June 1937. Maybe Tommy just didn't have time to learn those other 2 verses? (Actually, making room for take off solos is the reason for abridging the song in the Wills take.)

The only other hillbilly "oozin'" song I can recall offhand is Jimmie Tarlton's "Ooze Up to Me," one of his best performances, though his lyrics are difficult to understand. It derives from "Papa's Getting Hot" by Bill and Slim (Big Bill and Frank Brasswell), though the Tarlton performance is a lot more spirited. Unfortunately Tarlton's lyrics aren't a direct lift from the Bill and Slim track, which is quite easy to understand.

Thanks for the link. It was real interesting. I didn't know about Bob Wills' version.
I noticed in the thread that no one mentioned a tune called Lonesome Jailhouse Blues, or Jackhammer John which use the same melody and also I've found a version by someone named Lois "Granny" Thomas with alternate lyrics.
Man this folk process is wild!!!
