Okay so I remember the hanky panky rhyme, but I also heard a new one
from a new generation of kids, & it goes a little something like this:

Down by the bank of the hanky panky
where the bullfrogs jump from bank to bank
singing E-I-O-U

See that house on top of the hill
that's where me and my boyfrind lives
smell that chicken,
smell that rice,
come on baby let's shoot some dice

Just to have a new type of hanky panky played the
same way but a little twist when it's only two left..

Here's what I learned in San Francisco around 1990 in elementary school:

Down by the banks of the hanky-panky
Where the bullfrogs jump from bank to banky
With a hip, hop, hippity hoppety
East side, west side, kerrrrrplop

That was done to a circle elimination game as described in some other posts.

A few years later I learned a slightly different version from some kids at day camp, also in San Francisco

Down by the banks of the hanky panky
Where the bullfrog jumps from bank to banky
With an eeps, ops, soda pop
Frog missed the lily and he went kerplop (freeze)

This was done to a 2-person handclap game which I can't really describe because it had some complicated motions. You did the same hand game, sometime right after or right before this other rhyme to the same motions. The lyrics to that one:

Bo bo, say yotton cotton
Nay nay, you are so rotten
Itty bitty cocoa puff
Bobo say yotton cotton BOOM (freeze)

Both of these rhymes had tunes that went with them.

I sang this soooo much as a kid in Shoreview, Minnesota in the late 60's, early 70s:

We sang it as a round, it sounds very cool like that :)
Feeling very nostalgic here, and impressed that this has been documented to be chanted in so many different forms all the way around the world.

My children learnt the clapping rhyme Hanky Panky in Nigeria and, when they came to England, taught it to all the children in primary school. It went like this -

Down by the river there's hanky panky
Where frogs jump from back to back,
Eeeee, Ooooo,
Eeeee, Ooooo,
Eeeee, Ooooo,
Bad dog.

I think they must have misheard it when they first learnt it and then taught all the kids at primary school the wrong words.

The version I recall goes like this:

and plays with his Rubber Ducky Ding....... Dong!

It's the typical hand-slapping game where two children sit face-to-face with their palms outstretched, slapping back and forth. The "Dong" signifies that the game is over, and the last person who has slapped has won.

I was in grade school between 1986-1993 or so, in Southwest Florida.

My sisters and I would play this when we were younger in the 90's. Now they do it differently--especially the one that works with kids.
Both versions stood in a circle with overlapped hands that you would 'slap' on the beat as you chanted/sang. The person who was slapped on the last syllable was out.

Our first version went like this (very simple):
Down by the riverbank
Hanky panky
Hear the bull frogs jump
From bank to bank
Singing ooh ahh, ooh, ahh
East to the west
'is the bull frog.

Their newer version goes like this:
Down by the river banks hanky panky
where the bull frogs jump from bank to bank
Sayin' ooh ahh, ooh pa-pa,
Skiddle, diddle Kernel Pop
Now we're drinking 7-up
7-up has no caffeine
Now we're drinking gasoline
Gasoline tastes awful fine
Now we're drinking mount... ain...
DEW!! (on 'DEW' the one who is 'slapped' is out, and it begins again)

here's how I have learned it:

down by the banks of the hanky panky
where the bulfrogs jump from bank to banky
singin' E,I,O,U,A,S
slap, you're OUT!

players form a circle with their left hand under the left player's right hand and their right hand on the right players left hand. players would circle clockwise,using their right hand to clap the next player's left hand in turn. on the word 'OUT',the player about to be clapped tries to pull their hand out. if they succeed, nobody gets out and the game continues. if they are clapped, they are out, the two surrounding players link the circle back together,and then the game continues.

final round:
when only 2 players remain, they hold right hands and put their left hands out in alignment with the right hands.they swing their right hands to smack the left hands in turn. on the word 'OUT',the person about to be smacked tries to pull their hand out if they succeed,a new round takes place. if not,the remaining player wins! bye!:)

I vaguely remember this being a circle handclap elimination game as described above.

I always thought that these rhymes were "alive" only on the playground, and transmitted from child to child, but now that I have my own child, I find that I am remembering them and singing them to her as I scour my brain for any kind of nonsense that might amuse her. Might there be two ways these rhymes are passed on? Although I bet the first time my daughter hears a version from her peers, it will instantly replace the uncool "mom" or "home" version.

Ganked a version from a book I was reading to see if I could read it to my nieces, "The Fabled Fourth Graders of Aesop Elementary School". (The answer is no, by the way - if I want to read them Sideways Stories from Wayside School, Louis Sacher did it first and BETTER.)

I'm from Ireland (Dublin), grew up in the 80's (born 1979).
We used to sing this in a circle clap game to choose who could choose the next group game (e.g. Red rover, kick the can, grass houses, what's the time mr. Wolf etc) or pass the time at break time at school.

I always wondered what all that nonsensical stuff was in the middle, but never thought that it might have been a degradation of someone elses words. I just thought it was nonsense.

We played the circle elimimenation game, but when you said "Kong" the final slapper had to essentially fake out the slappee, because the way we played, if the slapper hit the NEXT persons hand because you moved yours in time, the KONG stayed "in" and the song started over.

Made for loooooong days.

Beverly Hills, CA, 1984-1988. What I remember:

Down by the banks of the hanky pank
where the bullfrogs jump from bank to bank
with an eeps, eips, opse, opps
me socka dilly with a kerplop

For the record, I was always confused by the socka dilly line, but that's what everyone sang so there you go. Seeing some of the lily pad versions is very interesting and I love all the variations!

Not sure if you have addressed this elsewhere. I do remember a rhyme like this, but not what it was attached to (if anything):

Miss Lucy had a tugboat
the tugboat had a bell
Miss Lucy went to heaven

And that's all I remember, though there may have been more to it. I am surprised that I a) remembered as much as I did and b) that I ever happily chanted that on the playground - among other songs I am remembering from scanning this database. Whoa.
