How about "Songs learned while in the Military Service?"
(broadened in scope from the original idea of "Songs from the Phillipine Insurrection", which I felt had been unfairly neglected until I tried in vain to find some)

"Songs About Invertebrates"? (Good for Coral Groups, I'd think!)

Q.If nobody stays awake for an entire Lullabye workshop, will it be deemed successful?

Q. Will any revival of Gilston's songs of losing limbs be used as part of the dismembership drive?

....or maybe in the Doo Wop session?....

"Dis-mem-mem, dis-mem-ba-member...."

....(I'd better leave before any of these alleged-Peacenik-types start "taking up arms" against me).....

An instrumental jam, possibly a slow one? Not any particular genre, Just a chance to swap tunes. I'd be willing to do this one if you'd like.

I sure hope there's a jug band workshop.

Also, anyone willing to give pointers for instrumentalists working with singers, good habits, bad habits?

How about an "Out of Season" workshop? It seems to me any number of us have whole repertoires of songs that we never get to hear one another sing because they're meant to be sung at a particular time of year, holiday or season.

Just a thought.

Carly, Nancy, Rita, et. al.,

No suggestions come to mind. However, as always, I will happily contribute music or workshop leading if wanted or needed. I do not get on the Mudcat much anymore since work disconnected everyone from the internet. However, I will try to check in more frequently as the Getaway approaches.

There are no songs that deal with the pervasive question of the perversity of inanimate objects. Not a one, traditional or contemporary!

Strange, given the socks that disappear and the coat hangers that cluster in our closets, and have done so for centuries.

Not a single song!

Could it be that our singer-songwriters dare not challenge the sock trolls, fearing their wrath? Or are their efforts being censored by some totalitarian power? Inquiring minds need to know!

But are there such brave and inquiring minds lurking on this thread?

Charley Noble, who will be otherwise distracted

Sure there's at least one song, Charlie! From the Austin Lounge Lizards:

To their rightful pairs restored,
We'll meet all our posessions
On the other shore."

Art,

We definitely want/need/accept items for the silent auction! The Silent Auction raises funds to provide scholarships to people who want to come to the Getaway but need help with the cost. Many of us, myself included, have been recipients of full or partial scholarships in the past.

Items range from jars of jelly, song books, cd's (of your own music OR used cd's that are ready for a new home), shawls, musical instruments, notecards, craft items, 'junque', anything large or small that you would like to contribute and that you hope someone might be inclined to bid on.

Surely this is the year a jimmyt thong will be a featured item in the auction?

Rita, Carly, Nancy, Mary, couldone of you chime in and talk a little about the origin of the fund, the the devoted FSGW members it memorializes?

Janie

The David Olive/Linda Lieberman Memorial Fund was, indeed, set up to provide scholarships to the Getaway. Davie and Linda were longtime and very active members of FSGW, both of them serving at various times on the board and on various committees. Davie was a large man with an even bigger heart, and a particular talent for the blues. Linda spent much of her spare time caring for rescued animals of all sorts; their home was a waystation for all kinds of creatures, including a beaver who spent his recooperation in their bathtub. Anyone who knew them can tell you stories; they were intelligent, talented, witty people, and if Davie could be gruff, and Linda ascerbic, behind that dwelt two truly caring souls. Tragically, they died in an automobile accident on their way home from a Getaway, an event they loved.

I'd certainly be up for "Guilty Pleasures". Not that I can think of any music I own (or sing) that drives my lovely wife out of the roof. (As for the cat...well, she's a cat, what else need be said?). OTOH, looking at the bigger picture of me as FSGW member and Mudcatter, I suppose I'd have to consider filk as a "guilty pleasure", eh? 8-)

Meanwhile, I'm always up for hosting Humor or Parodies. Or Jewish Songs. Could also do Traveling Songs, or Songs From Literary Sources.

The program committee (Rita, Nancy and Carly) had a very productive meeting this week; the program for the Getaway is beginning to come together, now that we have some idea who will be coming to this year's festivities. We want to let everyone know that we went over this thread and pulled out all of your suggestions, ideas, and desires; we are paying close attention, and we appreciate your input.
As soon as we have some workshop leaders in place, we will start teasing you with delights to come.

Speaking of delights, I am very happy to be able to tell you that Heather Wood will be joining us this year, as well as a friend of mine from the west coast, Sylvia Herold. If there is some particular workshop you would just love to see either of them lead, let us know soon. The workshop list is growing rapidly.

It's quite a shock to see you've got Sylvia's name on the list & it'll be twice the pleasure. I'd love for her do a workshop or concert, it's been about 25 yrs since I seen her. Such talent enbodied in such a nice person. I'll be looking forward to seeing/hearing/meeting her again.

SRS, thanks for the visuals! I will probably waste about an hour today, looking at every one of them, and enjoy every minute of it. I grew up in the Washington,D.C., area. My folks used to take us to the bay and nearby river beaches, usually with a full carload of friends and/or cousins. Sunrise and sunset over the bay are "home baking and comfort food" to me. Lovely.

Well things are moving very nicely. We'll give you some specifics ASAP.

Carly, good news that Heather's coming! She's a really high-energy person and it's always great to have her there.

Dick, rest assured we have not strayed from our "original participation concept" -- in fact, we plan the program with maximum participation in mind! There will be some mini-concerts, of course -- but not more than 8 or 10 half-hour sessions in the course of the weekend. Our invited guests simply add to the mix. We'll have a preliminary list of workshops ready to post in a week or so (but don't hold us to that date -- much remains to be done, and we're still trying to figure out which FSGW folks will be there).

Linda and Mary -- Songs of the Copper Family is a great idea, and we'll take it under advisement. Any suggestions or volunteers on who could lead it?

Planning is moving apace, and it's looking like a great program already. Not that we've ever had a bad one...

To be continued...

Nancy

Dick, what Nancy said. We counted last year's mini concerts and are aiming at about the same number, because we do have some splendid talent -- as always -- that needs showcasing. For the rest, the invited guests will lead and participate in workshops and hang out, as they always do.
The results can be pretty magical.

Nancy, Carly, Rita, et al,

Sinsull, I may have missed it but I haven't seen a list of workshops yet. I would certainly participate in any fashion.

Maybe it ought to be broadened to other 'brother's or Old Timey Singing, perhaps? That way folks could sing unaccompanied Applachian songs, etc?

Amos,
I had never considered playing Teen Angel on the banjo and guitar in the 'old time way'. It's a strange and yet bizarre concept.

So, of course, I like it.

I blurred the lines between Bluegrass and Rockabilly at Galax this year with some success (applause, no vegetables), so why not 'Golden Oldies" and Old Time. Bob Carlin recorded "Hey Mr. Spaceman" on old time Banjo, after all.

Just don't tell Bill Day we're co-mingling our genres. I don't think he's forgiven me for bringing a Telecaster on Stage at an FSGW concert in the '80's yet.

Have you, Bill?

Would it be okay if some of us 'Catter's came up with an idea for a fundraiser for Jeff/Pene during the Getaway?

See About Jeff/Pene--Read and Help Out..

Sounds like Jeff and his Dad could really use some help. I don't have anything in particular in mind, but if you give the OK, I'm sure we can put our heads together and come up with something pretty quick.

And if it ain't cool and FSGW doesn't feel like they can allow that==why that is OK too!
