Subject: in praise of fred jordan From: The Sandman Date: 26 Aug 06 - 01:09 PM after a conversation recently with Jim Carroll on this forum,he said that he found the fantasy of harry cox as a professional folk singer hard to imagine..But Fred Jordan although a semi professional singer was a consummate entertainer, a man who clearly enjoyed performing, a man who was professional in his approach and who managed to straddle the bridge between traditional singer and folk singer with ease. The only other unaccompanied singer ive seen who had the ability to win and charm an audience was Roy Harris.I will just have a drink in his memory,Thanks FRED. |

A singer who shall remain nameless began an interminable introduction to an interminable song. I got up to take a leak. So did Fred. I gave him a hand down the interminable flight of stairs, and we progressed very slowly to the gents. There we did what gents usually do in the gents whilst swapping stories, before we eventually made our way back up the interminable flight of stairs. Believe me, we were in no hurry at all. Arriving at the door, which of course was barred against us, I stood waiting for the round of applause. "There's no need for that", said Fred. "She'll still be yapping away about the same bloody song". She was too. |

Fred had a definite idea of the appropriate way to finish up: "As my old Dad used to say to me, leave the f***ers with tears in their eyes." Fred of course was splendidly earthy in his choice of phrase, but above all this demonstrated that he was a skilled and calculating performer, not just a wonderful singer. And you're bang on,Captain, about Roy Harris as well. I've seen no better performer when it comes to communicating with an audience. |

That'll be a challenge, especially in light of comments above, as I only sing unaccompanied when solo (and haven't done a solo booking for about 5 years..!) Wish me luck! Kitty PS The first time I saw Fred was when I was a student at the Heritage club in Oxford, and he used to fix his gaze on a young lady while singing. The interviews with him at the National Festival in Sutton Bonington and at Whitby (when he recalled his parents pocketing the fees for his early performances) were hugely enjoyable. I also had the privilege of being in the audience and chorus for the recording of Roy Harris live at the White Lion in Wherwell, and his introductions as well as the singing were absolutely fabulous. |
