Subject: in praise of fred jordan From: The Sandman Date: 26 Aug 06 - 01:09 PM after a conversation recently with Jim Carroll on this forum,he said that he found the fantasy of harry cox as a professional folk singer hard to imagine..But Fred Jordan although a semi professional singer was a consummate entertainer, a man who clearly enjoyed performing, a man who was professional in his approach and who managed to straddle the bridge between traditional singer and folk singer with ease. The only other unaccompanied singer ive seen who had the ability to win and charm an audience was Roy Harris.I will just have a drink in his memory,Thanks FRED. |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Aug 06 - 02:14 PM Any idea where that previous discussion was? You can click on Captain Birdseye in any of your posts, and a list of your posts will come up. By the way, if you're interested in posts from Roy Harris, his Mudcat name is Burl (click). Dind't have such good luck making a link to Jim Carroll - closest I could come to was this (click), since it appears he hasn't posted under his Mudcat registration. Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Dave the Gnome Date: 26 Aug 06 - 03:27 PM Definitely - Only met him a couple of times, both at Fylde, but he was a throroughly entertaining chap both on and off-stage. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Big Al Whittle Date: 26 Aug 06 - 07:19 PM love the Derek Brimstone story about Fred. they were having a drink together outside a pub in Whitby, and inside they could hear a load of folkies singing about how they pick wild mountain Thyme. Fred said, what a silly song. I mean, who'd pick that stuff? S'no bloody use to anyone! |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Fred McCormick Date: 28 Aug 06 - 03:30 PM I was in one of the ballad sessions in Whitby Conservative Club once, when Fred was getting very unsteady on his pins. A singer who shall remain nameless began an interminable introduction to an interminable song. I got up to take a leak. So did Fred. I gave him a hand down the interminable flight of stairs, and we progressed very slowly to the gents. There we did what gents usually do in the gents whilst swapping stories, before we eventually made our way back up the interminable flight of stairs. Believe me, we were in no hurry at all. Arriving at the door, which of course was barred against us, I stood waiting for the round of applause. "There's no need for that", said Fred. "She'll still be yapping away about the same bloody song". She was too. |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 29 Aug 06 - 06:56 AM I was conversing over breakfast with Fred at Bromyard Festival several years ago, when the subject turned to his views on planning a concert set. Fred had a definite idea of the appropriate way to finish up: "As my old Dad used to say to me, leave the f***ers with tears in their eyes." Fred of course was splendidly earthy in his choice of phrase, but above all this demonstrated that he was a skilled and calculating performer, not just a wonderful singer. And you're bang on,Captain, about Roy Harris as well. I've seen no better performer when it comes to communicating with an audience. |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Herga Kitty Date: 29 Aug 06 - 05:51 PM Ho, hum - I've accepted a solo booking at the Lewes Arms folk club next April, because I've been asked to do a solo booking. That'll be a challenge, especially in light of comments above, as I only sing unaccompanied when solo (and haven't done a solo booking for about 5 years..!) Wish me luck! Kitty PS The first time I saw Fred was when I was a student at the Heritage club in Oxford, and he used to fix his gaze on a young lady while singing. The interviews with him at the National Festival in Sutton Bonington and at Whitby (when he recalled his parents pocketing the fees for his early performances) were hugely enjoyable. I also had the privilege of being in the audience and chorus for the recording of Roy Harris live at the White Lion in Wherwell, and his introductions as well as the singing were absolutely fabulous. |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Paul from Hull Date: 30 Aug 06 - 09:21 AM Never been priveleged to see Roy Harris perform, but ol' Fred was GREAT...not only as a performer of course, but as a 'character'. How bad is Roy for groping ladies bottoms? *G* |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 30 Aug 06 - 09:31 AM Completely blameless. |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Paul from Hull Date: 30 Aug 06 - 01:44 PM Hehe...thanks Brian! |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: BB Date: 30 Aug 06 - 05:54 PM One is tempted to ask how you could possibly know, Brian! Barbara |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Herga Kitty Date: 30 Aug 06 - 06:02 PM Oh no, BB, don't go casting aspersions! But Roy Harris's description of singing to an audience of nuns in the US was particularly enjoyable! Kitty |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: The Sandman Date: 31 Aug 06 - 11:02 AM There was the story[ I dont know if it was true] that fred jordan and the reverend kenneth loveless once had to share a bed, or a bedroom, the reverend ken [not noted for groping ladies bottoms]kept getting up [stark naked] to pray during the night. I suppose fred just regarded as all part of the work of a festival.trooper and professional that he was. |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: BB Date: 31 Aug 06 - 03:30 PM Not at all, Kitty. It was more a sly dig at Brian (albeit a friendly one) rather than at Roy, who as far as I am aware, has always been the perfect gentleman - and he's been a friend for longer than I care to think about! Barbara |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: Herga Kitty Date: 31 Aug 06 - 03:43 PM Hugh Rippon shared a room with Fred too (and, a long time ago, at a Herga Morris feast, sang one of Fred's songs in a very passable imitation. I'm currently having a senior moment and can't remember which song it was...) Kitty |

Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 01 Sep 06 - 06:52 AM Ah, I thought maybe rumours of my appearance in drag at Pinewoods camp might have reached you, Barbara. No-one (male or female) groped my bottom on that ocasion, I'm disappointed to admit. |
Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: GUEST,cookieless folkiedave Date: 01 Sep 06 - 07:52 AM Fred once stayed with us and it was all on to get him to take his boots off to get into bed. |

Subject: RE: in praise of fred jordan From: BB Date: 02 Sep 06 - 07:59 AM No, no! There's a misunderstanding here! I merely asked Brian... Oh, never mind - when in a hole, stop digging! As to Fred, haven't we all, Helen! I'm sure that's what used to keep him going! Barbara |
