The Bothy Folk Club in Southport, Merseyside ( 20 miles north of Liverpool,UK) has been running weekly since 1965 and must be one of the longest running clubs in the country. Back in 1986, they celebrated their 21st birthday with a week-end of events. The whole thing was captured on video and the club has recently released a dvd of the event. It must be said that the technical quality of the original recording is somewhat "primitive", but it does capture a living folk club - warts and all!. All the performances are by musicians/dancers associated with the club, and includes many of the club's resident singers past and present. It also features the Southport Swords, Morris Dancing team, and the Argemeols Ladies Clog dancing team. It would provide our American friends with an interesting "fly on the wall" look at an English folk club.
Here is a link to the club's website:- http://www.bothyfolkclub.co.uk/

I used to go the Bothy way back when. I saw lots of great artists there: Hedy West, Ewan McColl, Nic Jones etc. I used the link to the club's website, and was sorry to hear that a number of the resident singers that I used to enjoy back then have passed on. I live some distance from the club now, but I must make the effort to get there sometime.

Joe, is there an e-mail address that we can write to? The website had a phone number, but an e-mail contact would be easier (and cheaper!) for those of us in the U.S.

I would very much like to see this DVD, for the reasons you mention. Fascinating!

Ron

Tunesmith, I remember Hedy West et al at the Bothy then, also Shirley Collins, Bert LLoyd, Michael Cooney, Trevor Lucas, Carthy/Swarb & many more greats.
If you have any memories of the Bothy, share them with us here & on the Bothy Folk Club website Guestbook.
There are still a few of us left!
Drop in and see us if you're ever in the area.
Ron:- Pete Rimmer has compiled the DVD so he's the one to see at (music@abacuscare.com)
Cheers

Delighted to see such interest in this item, especially as, on the evidence of the dvd, I was so much older then (and more intense?) - I'm younger than that now! There is indeed some superb archive footage and all those interested in seeing the unedited 12 hours worth of original videotape, can approach me at Fylde Festival this weekend. (Oh yeh, Clive, sure.)
The Ran Tan Band are in fine form, as they always were, at the Ceilidh - the 1st time we'd used St. Johns Hall as a venue and my piece to camera is particularly engaging! Seriously, an email to me at jean@pownceby.fsnet.co.uk with your details will enable me to pass on details about how to secure you a dvd. Maybe we should lodge a copy with the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library? I don't think Play.com will be too keen to take it!!!!
