Subject: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 28 Aug 06 - 06:15 AM Just to let any fans of Jeff Davis out there (and surely there should be many of you!), that Jeff is arriving in England tomorrow and beginning a short tour with folk club dates in Uppermill, Birmingham, Stockport, Lewes, Walthamstow and Croydon, and festival appearances at Fylde and the Sweet Sunny South event near Hastings. For the uninitiated, Jeff is a singer who understands traditional style better than most, an ace old-time fiddle and banjo player, and much more besides. Go here to find out more, hear samples and see tour dates. Jeff should have his new CD (at last!) ready for the visit. |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: Dave Ruch Date: 28 Aug 06 - 09:19 AM Hurray on the new CD! Thanks Brian for the post. I wish Jeff toured in the US as often as he does over there; he is fantastic. Can't wait to hear the new recording. |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: Desert Dancer Date: 28 Aug 06 - 03:30 PM A CD! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A few years back he wrote in his Folk Alliance newsletter column that he didn't think he'd ever record a cd because he didn't think what he did was that important in the grand scheme of folk music. I sent him a note saying strongly that I felt otherwise. I'm glad he's seen the light; the motivation may be only economic - he said once that he wasn't bothering to tour because it's too hard to make any money touring if you don't have any merchandise to hawk as well - but whatever the reasons, I know this is one I'll be getting! (Though he's toured the UK a bit, we've seen less of him in the US outside of the northeast.) ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: Desert Dancer Date: 28 Aug 06 - 09:22 PM Brian, I'm at home now and having a chance to look at your link and listen to a clip -- if you had anything to do with helping get him in the studio, thanks! I like that melodeon backing. :-) ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 30 Aug 06 - 05:55 AM You've noticed, Becky, that Jeff is unreasonably modest about his considerable abilities. Various friends including myself have been pestering him to make a CD for years now. The availability of myself and of Howie Bursen to help out on a few tracks in the studio did, I think, increase Jeff's enthusiasm a little. And certainly a CD increases the profit margin for the touring artist. Dave, the reason Jeff tours regularly in the UK is that I set up the dates for him (as friend and fan, not as agent). Aforementioned modesty and a more general distaste for the admin side of the business mean he doesn't play gigs in the US nearly as much as he should (he earns much of his living from using music in educational projects). I do wish a few more event organisers over there would give a him a call - Jeff's is a unique talent, I think. Brian |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: Kevin Sheils Date: 30 Aug 06 - 06:35 AM I'm impressed at how well the live bits from my club at Walthamstow came out. Just a sneaky way of reminding everyone that he is back with us in Walthamstow on 10th September. Expecting a good night as usual. |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: GUEST,Henryp Date: 03 Sep 06 - 06:19 PM Jeff Davis was in terrific form in his concerts at Fylde. Each song presents a vivid picture of the past, recording the way people used to live and the events that affected their lives. His humour is as droll as ever too. Do catch him if you can! 4: Stockport, Red Bull http://www.stockportfolk.co.uk 7: Lewes, Royal Oak Folk Club http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tinvic/ 8-9: Hastings, Sweet Sunny South Festival http://www.sweetsunnysouth.co.uk/home.html 10: Walthamstow,The Plough Inn, Wood St, Walthamstow http://www.walthamstowfolk.co.uk/ 11: Croydon, Ruskin House (with Brian Peters) http://www.croydonfolksongclub.org.uk |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: Barry Finn Date: 03 Sep 06 - 07:06 PM Thanks Brian for the heads up on Jeffs CD. He's certainly a great singer, musician, performer & presenter, as well as an all around nice guy too & you're right, he doesn't get around nearly as much at home as one would want. Catching him & you together at Mystic was quite a tasty treat & maybe can happen more often, that'd be nice as you don't get this way often enough either. He's always been an informed joy & treat weither alone or with others as his great taste in the music he chooses is likewise shown in his taste of the company he keeps on stage. I'll be looking forward to his CD & I hope that you Uk'ers will treat him with the care & love that we yanks treat him back home & please after you're done with him send him back home decent shape. Use him but don't abuse him. Barry |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: Dave Ruch Date: 03 Sep 06 - 09:18 PM The new CD is fantastic. I managed to get me a copy before Jeff left for the UK. Great selection of songs and tunes, expertly played and with that voice & singing style that just sounds so "right" for the songs. Highly recommended! |

Subject: RE: Jeff Davis: UK tour and new CD From: GUEST,Jon Dudley Date: 04 Sep 06 - 03:25 AM In response to Barry Finn's exhortation to 'use him but don't abuse him' we find that a little abuse is just the thing to get him going! The CD has had a longer gestation than almost any project I can think of but the result is well worth it with Jeff and sympathetic pairings with other musicians providing a superb album |
