Sorry to hear of Iain's passing. I met him on several occasions and he was a delightful man who had a knack for finding unusual songs and putting his own flavour in them.

Just been called with the news. I've lost a pal.

Charley - even better than that, the Stirling FC's held a celebration of Iain's life last year, with Iain and family in attendance.

I'm sure the Star in Glasgow and others will mark his passing.

John, I just had a call from Lorna to tell me. I'm still shocked in spite of it being expected.I've lost someone I had the highest regard for and it won't be the same without him around.

I was talking to someone about him just last weekend and now he's gone. Sad day indeed...

So so SO sorry to learn of this. We played at the same gig years ago and I've always remembered being simply blown away by him - his talent, his voice, his songs, the man himself, everything. The heavenly choir racks up yet another brilliant singer -

This is one of those we mourn who I have actually met. He sang at the Chocolate Church several years ago when I was working as a volunteer. A lovely evening. He seemed so gentle and yet there was another side to him that was hidden under there.

The last time I shared a stage with Iain was for a Christmas fund-raiser during the miners' strike in 1982, although I saw him again at Crail folk club about five years ago. Like others I knew this was on the cards - but still a terrible loss. But I'll bet that he'll have found Hamish (Imlach) by now and there will be some great music up there!

He was the first person that I saw in a 'folk' venue. I loved him immediately and totally connected with his music. Very sad to hear this news. He was my way in to folk songs.

What awfully sad news!

I met Iain but once, at a Marske Folk Club near Redcar - I was doing a world tour of floor spots prior to leaving the Navy and Iain was the guest.

I had had a really bad experience the night before in Sunderland with a drunken club organiser who delighted in telling me how crap I was and I told Iain I was on the verge of knocking it on the head and going home.

He listened to my 'floor spot' and (as we were both staying at the hotel where the club was based) afterwards in the bar he told me that (in his opinion) I had wowed the audience that night and he was worried about following my 'spot' as I'd played & sang so well.

A fortnight later I was booked to play at the Redcar Folk Festival and had one or two calls from club organisers in the North on Iain's recommendation.

I never got to see him again due to him being around Scotland & the North Of England and me being in Southampton but I treasured the man's wit, charm and advice and am deeply saddened at this news.

If anyone is in touch with Iain's family, please pass on my sincerest condolences and heartfelt gratitude for such a lovely, warm and kind human being - One of nature's gentlemen

A sad loss. I had the privilige to introduce him at several clubs over the years and he was always fascinating to listen to. One of the few guests all the organisers would stay in to listen to! He had a wide range of material and the knack of getting the best out of a song.

Jennifer and I played host to Iain on about three occasions when he was touring the eastern US several years ago, and there wasn't a nicer, less-intrusive guest in the world. Always a good word, always knowledgeable without being pompous or stand-offish, and just an all-'round good guy. The last time he was here, we watched a Billy Connelly comedy broadcast together, both families (his wife was with him this time, as I recall), and we all got the jokes, but thought Connelly used the fucking F-word too much.

I wish I knew half the songs Iain knew, and even more wish that I could put a song over one-tenth as well. I wish he had come through our part of the world more often and more recently. He will be missed.

One of the sad things about being an "exile" ---too many times the passing of old friends is learned from the threads of Mudcat. Danny Kyle--Hamish Imlach--Alec Atterson--Cyril Tawney; and now Iain.How the folkscene changes, and not aye for the better. Never can be the same without them. What you may not know is that the funeral is at Daldowie Crematorium, Nr Uddingston, at 11.45a.m. on Friday, 1st September.

I think many of us knew that he had been ill for sometime. But that he was a private man. I received an anonymous email about 3 years ago encouraging me to write Iain, as he liked hearing from people. The email also stated not to expect a reply. Well, Iain did reply. He said he missed the music, but not the driving. A sad loss.

I've been lucky enough to see Iain and Hamish very often at the end of the 80's in Germany. I loved those concerts, and Iain was always such a gentle and endearing person.

I am glad I happened to know this very special person.

Life becomes special because of the people you meet.

Iain helped so many people to forget the problems they had in life for some hours.

Looking at the schedule of his last tour in 2000 through Germany, I wonder where he got that energy from. His health was not good at that time already. So many people got the chance to see him again. And many travelled from far to tell him how important he was for them at a special point in time of their life.

People like him keep you moving.

Guest, I suppose he went everywhere he was invited on that last tour, in order to say farewell to as many of his fans as possible. And despite his frailty some of those concerts must rank among the best ones he ever did. I agree it was amazing, and he was a very special person. Not a saint by any means - although I just had an eMail where he was called 'oor Messiah wi' the banjo' - but certainly a man you don't meet every day.

I had the pleasure of booking Iain in Germany, and also on his farwell tour, not only that but also had the great pleasure of performing with him with our group togethere with Hamish. A great man has left us but his songs linger on and he will never be forgotten. I hope your singing now up there with Hamish god bless you both.

I'm still fighting for both air and words, as I learned only 15 minutes ago that he has left us. It seems that since I've moved to Canada I have lost contact by far too much and even the folk friends in Scotland didn't let me know.
I loved Ian and his art dearly ! Many a night we spent in the British Folk Clubs in Germany, playing in the Pub in Stade or in Hamburg ...

The last time we met was when we were both playing the EXPO in Wilhelmshafen ... I said I'd come to see him in Scotland, but it seems, it wasn't meant to be ...

I'm grateful for every night I got to spend with him and he will always stay with me !

Harry, I'll second that. I first met Iain in the Zwiebel in Hamburg in 1987 and would very much like to hear more - not only about Iain - from before that year.

Also, I'm looking for bootlegs of his gigs in order to collect as many of the songs he never put on LP or CD as possible. If anyone can help with that, I can be reached via skw at worldmusic dot de.

Time passed by, of course it did.

It´s almost 4 years since Iain left this world, at least in the way we used to know him.

Some times I wonder were people go when they die.

I like the idea to see people like Iain to appear from time to time in our dreams to remind us of the things which are really important in life. May be he does.

Still missed by many, have fond memories of the man... I can never forget the time he bought a round at the Tonder festival and it being Ian McCalmans birthday passed out the Bottle of beers to everyone on the table... How the hell he remembered which bottle was full of water instead of beer I don't know but some shouted "Skol." Bottles where raised and McCalman drank the water!!!!! A great Joker was our Iain.
