I just heard the very sad news that Muff Worden passed away on Sunday. She was visiting Denmark (no doubt researching obscure folks songs!) and succumbed to a heart attack. She will be sorely missed for her amazing knowledge, her great way of teaching and involving people in her passion for northern European traditions, keeping them alive through her many musical and theatrical community productions, for her humor and her great voice...
Bheir me-o... sad am I without thee

Rest peacefully, Muff

Julia

It's fascinating to do a Google search on her name. She must have been an amazing person. Click here to see her Website, and click here for more.
As far as I can tell, she posted here only once. I wish she had been part of our community here.

Yes, she was extraordinary, but worked "behind the scenes". At the time of her death, she was finally buying a house in Iceland where she has been teaching music and organizing traditional music events for the last 8 years or so. She went there exploring Icelandic music and its connections with otner northern European traditons. She passed on her New England Elderhostel duties to me and my partner Fred.
Although she was not active on this list, I know that many 'Catters knew her.

Best- Julia

I am shocked! Her real name was Ethelwyn, but few knew her by her given name. I met her many years ago through her cousin, Gordon Bok, and she was totally likeable.
We are ten times less by one.

Still reeling from the news, which we've received while travelling in New England. Muff was a larger than life character in our lives, in more ways than the obvious. She was our 'best maid' when we got married in Iceland two years ago, and helped us to have to most unusual and fun wedding and honeymoon! She was prolific on email and, as someone else has said to us, we will certainly miss her hefty messages. The world seems an emptier place today.

Ethelwyn "Muff" Worden, 63, of Seydisfjordur, Iceland, entered the higher life of uses on Friday, August 25, while vacationing in the Feroe Island (Denmark) vicinity, on her way to Scotland. While driving she pulled beside the road, and passed away peacefully and immediately from a heart attack. Pastor Ellis writes: "Muff grew up in the Swedenborgian faith in Philadelphia, and later became a member of the Boston Church, during my ministry. She was a talented member of the church choir for many years, being a great lover of music.   She would tell me about her life in Philly, her Swedenborgian faith, her father, and being part Cherokee. She was proud of her heritage, and glad for the day I introduced her to Slow Turtle, the Supreme Medicine Man of the Wampanoag Nation. In many ways Muff was the stuff legends are made of - her larger than life smile, her deep resonating laugher! She loved her cats, her music and her independence. She gave voice lessons to my wife and I. She was in sundry ways a loner, although, I was never quite sure if she was lonely. She loathed the political arena, even though she willingly served as Central Office Director, General Convention, from 1984 – 1990, upon the sudden death of Roger Paulson, her predecessor. Muff was most happy at one with the harmony of nature. She enjoyed the great outdoors, especially the moors of Scotland, which she loved to visit. It is hard to believe that she is no longer in the realm of physicality, but we can know that to the degree that she loved God and the neighbor she is united with God and those who love God.   I am happy that I had the occasion to serve as Muff's pastor, and the opportunity to be a part of her life for many years. Muff, a legendary giant in many ways and a person of distinction, will be missed! God be with Muff and God thank you for the gift she gave us in having lived and shared her life with us."

What an incredible person Muff Worden was. My husband and I knew Muff for over 34 years. I studied voice with her at one point even. Just to know Muff was a joy, and once you heard her laugh you never could get it out of your head.
I read of Muff's passing in our Dover Post Newspaper in Dover, DE. What a loss to the world, but what an addition to the Angel Choir in Heaven. Be at peace, my dear friend. You will be missed.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Muff it was through one of the Scottish lists that I met her 6 or 7 years ago. This past year Muff wrote me every day (sometimes twice a day at week-ends!) telling me all about her day, what she was cooking for dinner, who was staying over with her, and all about her concerts etc. not forgetting what her cats were doing, etc.etc. A truly amazing woman and a very wonderful person was Muff. We will all miss her terribly.
Sleep well, dear Muff.

I just heard the news of Muff's passing, and I am struggling to deal with this catastrophic news.

Muff cared for me dearly at her home in Seydisfjordur several years ago. I was preparing for an important oral examination, and spending a week in Iceland was restorative and, yes, I made it through the exam with flying colors.

We sang together for years and years in Boston. Muff's persoanl politics were far from the radical lefty politics embraced by my theater company, Little Flags, but Muff was always there fully supporting the musical and theatrical (and human!) moments that we created together. We both sang in the Boston Church of the New Jerusalem (Swedenborgian) choir, and Muff accompanied me many times in my own solo singing work. Muff did a wonderful one-woman evening at a coffeehouse in Central Square, Cambridge where she shared songs and stories from Scotland, Appalachia and Australia. What range!

I have been looking at Iceland Air special deals in the past two weeks considering when I might be able to get to Iceland in the next few months. And now to hear this news! I am so shocked, and wonder how the whole network of her friends is coping with the loss of such a significant human being.

I have two consolations, just now: that I will hear Muff in all the folk music that surrounds me; and that hundreds of others will, as well.

Sadly, sadly,

Thank you to all who have put postings on this site.

Like all of you, I am stunned and saddened at the news about Muff. I met Muff 31 years ago this past summer in Richmond Virginia at a Phi Theta Kappa conference. She was a friend of my mother, who was, like Muff, a Phi Theta Kappa advisor. We developed a fast friendship, regardless of the age difference. Muff was a fine teacher- from her I learned backgammon and photography. When I went off to college, -in the dark ages before email- we corresponded regularly.

With Muff, it didn't matter how long it had been since you last talked to her, when you talked with her again it seemed as if no time had passed. While I lost contact with her as my career progressed, when I found her again 4 years ago (thanks to the internet), she was just as warm, just as enthusiastic, and just as energetic as ever.

Muff touched the lives of so many people, in such wonderful ways. I'm so glad to have known her, to have shared good times together, and to have called her friend. She made all of our lives better, and we are better people for knowing her.

Thank you for letting me ramble.

I have just heard the very sad news of Muff Worden's passing from my cousin in Seydisfjordur.

I first met Muff on-line in 2001 as we were both researching Scottish family history and, as well, I was just connecting with my Icelandic roots in Seydisfjordur. She was so kind and full of life. She would send me pictures of her house, her jeep and talk to old timers in town to pass on information to me about my grandmother's family. I would be up at 5 a.m before work and we would e-mail back and forth.

I had lost touch with Muff in the last few years but such was the strength of our contact that on hearing the news, I feel as if I have lost a dear friend.
My sincere condolences to Muff's friends and family.

Trish

I had the great privilege of working with Muff with regard to Worden genealogy. She was a wonderfully warm and intelligent person who had many interests and cared deeply about people and history. I was not aware of her death until now when an email to her was returned to me and I Google'd her name. May she rest in peace.

I corresponded by e-mail with Muff over a period of several years, as she contacted relatives of my family around Seydisfjord and even sent photos of the farms they came from around the turn of the last century.

Then the e-mails stopped, and I wondered why. I never occurred to me that her death was the reason - I though perhaps she had moved back to the USA or something.

Today I performed a Google search on her name and found this site to my sorrow.

I last posted on this thread in April regarding my sadness in hearing of Muff Worden's's passing. I was wondering if anyone knows the whereabouts of the information and pictures on Muff's geocities website. Unfortunately, by the time I heard the news, her website had been shut down. She had writings, translations of Icelandic documents, and many beautiful pictures of Sedisfjordur and other places in Iceland. What a shame if all her documentation is lost.
Would appreciate if someone knows about this to contact me at trishwright@telus.net

Thank you

I am just so shocked to hear this news. A few years ago I sold some of my harp music to Muff - we met only 'on-line' but became 'epals' for some time, talking about harps and music generally. I loved her website. Now that a harpist friend is going to Iceland on holiday, I thought I'd find out if she'd be staying far from Muff so that perhaps they could meet. I found this page today and, as I said, was really shocked. What a loss to music and all her many friends around the world.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Muff, I only knew her through Emails, and she would often joke that we should drop by when she had an event going on. My messages to Muff started bouncing quite awhile ago, I figured she may have changed servers and my email address got lost. I also figured that sooner or later she would email me and ask why I hadn't been sending her anything. Today I decided to GOOGLE her to see if I could find anything, I was sad to find the Obit.

Evelyn Roberts just found this obit and sent it out. I knew Muff through Scottish music and the Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire. Years ago she sent me a tune from Iceland; I will make sure that it is printed in the papers of the Society, with a note to tell the other members what a joyous and generous friend we all lost. It hardly seems possible she died so long ago; she sent me such wonderful accounts of her life in Iceland, and how much she loved it!
How sad that fine friends can slip away without our noticing! We are all so much richer for her having been with us for a while.

We are totally shocked to hear this news, four years later.
I am an Irish musician and I played in the Blue Church in Seydisfjordur in June 2005.
Muff booked the gigs there at that time.
Kumiko and I stayed with her for about a week and later met her again in Reykjavik where she came for my concert there.
She told us she was going to Scotland on a sabbatical and I emailed her there without getting any response. I had a slight fear for her since that time.
She will be sadly missed by us and obviously by her many friends around the world.
How sad to think we will not meet again.

I met Muff many years ago in Iceland.

I had lived there before and decided to return on a cycling trip.
We planned that day, to cycle for 60 km and then stop.
The weather was getting bad, and my cycling companion had a nasty break on his bicycle.
We were stranded - and no cars were passing - only trucks that couldnt help.

Not only did a Good Samaritan called Muff Worden stop and help... she put our bikes in the back of the car, took us for lunch and to warm up at a local friends cafe. Then she drove us to her home and let us stay for the night!
It was one of the worst storms in a long time and we were glad to not be camping.

We felt like family.
She was the kindest stranger.
I will never forget her. My friend Muff.
