Subject: RE: English traditional songs for children From: GUEST,Rahere Date: 25 Sep 14 - 11:33 AM And there's an entire section on TraditionalMusic. For teenagers, why spare them? Get them playing an instrument and stuck into the main course. The conflict of the sex stereotypes in no end of ballads suits them down to the ground! |

Subject: RE: English traditional songs for children From: Mo the caller Date: 01 Sep 06 - 03:46 PM I vaguely remember that there are 2 versions of keys of Canterbury, The one where she wont marry him until he offers her the key of his heart, and the other version where he says I will give you the keys of my chest All the money I possess If you'll marry, arry arry arry If you'll marry me (but when she accepts he says) Ha ha ha isn't it funny She doesn't want me but she wants my money I wont marry arry arry arry I wont marry you I think that the Opies wrote that the cynical version was found in childrens folklore |

Subject: RE: English traditional songs for children From: Herga Kitty Date: 31 Aug 06 - 04:56 PM Do they have to be English, and for children, why the bias against Hackney? Songs are only hackneyed if the children haven't already hear them ad nauseam. I remember listening to the BBC at primary school (a long time ago) so we could sing Strawberry Fair, When the boat comes in, What shall we do with a drunken sailor, and Riding on a donkey, also My love's an arbutus and the Skye boat song, (not English). A friend of mine learned from Jim Mageean and Johnny Collins, and passed on to his infant son, who subsequently sang them to his primary school teacher, "All God's critters got a place in the choir" and "Tindy lend me your pigeon". The son also learned and sang the Kippers' "Norfolk and good", but I guess that's not recommended for children..... Kitty |
