Subject: Rollright Stones Project From: jonm Date: 04 Sep 06 - 03:39 AM The Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire is the only major stone circle not supported by English Heritage or the National Trust, I believe. Last January, significant vandalism was done and the private individuals who manage the site cannot afford the repair cost. A small group of individuals got together to launch a music project to raise funds for this. CDs are now available and the first of a series of gigs will happen on the 16th September. Most of the content is trad to avoid copyright issues. For more details on any of the above, see rollright project The participants in the project have covered the costs of recording and duplication, so apart from postage, 100% of the proceeds will go to the Rollrights Trust. Please have a look and support the project if you feel able to. Even if you don't like the music, the discs make great coasters (but then you would need to buy a set of six...). |
Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: GUEST,Desdemona Date: 04 Sep 06 - 09:10 AM Thanks for the heads-up; I've already ordered mine. I was just there with my sons this summer, it's a fascinating place, and blessedly free of the accoutrements of tourism...just barley and wheat fields and rolling hills on every side. ~D |

Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 04 Sep 06 - 07:38 PM Thanks, jonm- I was there last summer and felt that it was one of the most beautiful visits in my whole trip. I'll order me a cd or 2! |
Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: Scrump Date: 05 Sep 06 - 05:26 AM The Rollright Stones? Sounds like a tribute band to me. |
Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: GUEST,Mr Red still cursing XP Date: 05 Sep 06 - 08:29 AM Watch-out for mid-summer revels - I have been to a Shakespearean Play round then - the Tempest. & I have seen the dawn over the stones on the longest day. It was right there behind the mist. & I wrote a song about them. Now your starter for ten - how many stones? Oh yea? count again. |
Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: GUEST,Desdemona Date: 06 Sep 06 - 09:05 AM Between myself, my partner, and my 2 kids (each going round the circle 3 separate times, and it was HOT!) we came up with wildly varying numbers, and each one came up with a different total each time...but my dearest wish came true anyway, since at the time it was to head for the nearest pub! ~D |
Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: Geoff the Duck Date: 06 Sep 06 - 12:17 PM Many years back Peter Bellamy did a picture ( he was an excellent artist as well as singer) of the Rollwright Stones - a rock band resembling one of a similar name. I think it was probably a cover picture for Whitby Folk Week newsletter when he was editing it. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: Liz the Squeak Date: 06 Sep 06 - 12:39 PM Terry Pratchett has been linked to the Rollrights in the past... are you telling me he can't afford to help out? LTS |
Subject: RE: Rollright Stones Project From: jonm Date: 06 Sep 06 - 04:48 PM We'll sell him a CD if he wants. Meanwhile, this is our contribution, since at the time nobody else was helping out! |
