Anyone else ever had the sense that the magic in the old songs and stories are clues to a different way of being in the world -- not just fanciful bits of musing? I think we once had a different relationship to what we now consider the magical arts.

Sure... I'm keen on the idea of a Gravesian take on folksong. As a good example of this, check out 'Where is Saint George? Pagan imagery in English Folk Song' by Bob Stewart.
