For the people whose main obstacle is financial: Thanks in large part to the efforts of many Mudcatters, the Getaway scholarship fund is in great shape. Help with the cost of the Getaway might make a difference for some of the folks who feel they can't come, especially if you would have massive travel expenses on top of the Getaway cost.

We need you! And we'll miss you if you miss the Getaway!

PM me, Charlie, Nancy King or Carly if you think a full or partial scholarship could make the difference. They are given based on need, but also on the contribution the applicant will make to the Getaway. Travel expenses are a legitimate factor in determining need! We have a tentative list of local people who may need a full or partial scholarship so we have some idea of the demand on the fund. We can give you an approximate answer fairly early.

I'm personally rather worried, especially after reading Bobert's post. There has never before been a thread of "I don't plan to go to the Getaway" announcements. People may not come, but they just state it somewhere in the main Getaway threads, where you can also see who is coming and look forward to the fun. This is a discouraging thread! Both to people who are debating whether to come, and to the Getaway volunteers who are working hard to keep the Getaway a living program and a going concern.

I agree with Ferrara - last year's Getaway was so marvelous, and this year it's almost like there's some kind of Getaway boycott underway.   Why? I don't know if it has to do with the fact that the camp is alcohol free this year. That will not deter me, I come for the music and the companionship and am not bothered about having alcohol or not. I wouldn't have thought it was that much of a factor in the equation. The cameraderie at last year's Getaway was phenomenal, and I don't think it was entirely or even mostly due to the fact that alcohol was available. I feel very bad for the folks at FSGW who have worked hard to find a place to accomodate everyone, even those who have trouble getting around, which has comfortable accomodations, and is still affordable, and on top of that they are offering scholarships to people who can't manage on their own.

I think we need to remember the Getaway is an FSGW event with a long and wonderful history. Because of some overlap in membership, we 'Catter's have been priviledged to be invited to join in the weekend over the past several years, and those of us who have been fortunate to be able to attend have found our lives and our music much richer for the experience.

Perception of Getaway? An absolutely magical, musical, restorative weekend Getaway! It has truly become the most looked-forward to event in my year. Singing, sharing, listening, learning, musically empowering, fellowship, fellowship, fellowship! And I am actually an introvert and more than a little socially awkward.

Let me just say here and now, that I would love to be able to go, and not to be fighting the airline [Icelandair] for the refund of the money I paid for the fares.
I had this cunning plan consisting of hikers/cyclists aluminium bottles to get round the drink problem, so no sweat there, separating a Scotsman like myself from his drink is a man's job, not a church mouse's!
I would hate to feel that I played any part in discouraging anybody else from going by inserting a note of negativity.
I would also like to think that a lovely lady like KT wasn't going because without me she'd be sad.
Neither are true folks, so go to the Getaway and enjoy yourselves, and raise a 'non see through' glass to.

Maryrrf, my reasons for not attending this year have absoltuely NOTHING to do with boycott or beverage. The GETAWAY is a phenomenal experience and to anyone who hasn't been and is considering it, I say, GO!!! You will have a wonderful time with wonderful people, (which is why I said somewhere back there, I will look forward to all of the wild and wonderful post-Getaway tales.   From what I read above, it's those who have enjoyed themselves immensely at GETAWAYS past, who are writing to say, sadly, that they will miss this one.

I hate this, seeing all the names of people I missed meeting last year, and now they're not coming this year. Serves me right for missing it last year, I guess.
But I DO get to meet Anglo. My last chance to meet him was at the Festival of the Sea in San Francisco. I was driving there, but turned around when I hit a huge rainstorm and couldn't see to drive - and yet the storm missed San Francisco.

Folks, please make every attempt to go to this Getaway. It is our first year in a new location, has heat and comfy beds, and promises to be a very good time. Getaway is, quite simply, Shangra La for folkies and especially Mudcatters. We have some notable absences, but as you can plainly see, they are very regretful not to be there. This is a must do event, if you can make it.

Ummmm, let my make a little more of a clarification... The P-Vine and I have been goin' balls to the wall since movin' outside Luray a little overa year ago... Yeah, I stole away for last years Getaway leavin' a lot on the P-Vine... We talked about it and agreed that this year we'd try to "get away" together somewhere's but we're still going balls to the wall and will be until the first hard killer frost, whenever that occurs...

yeah, I prolly could have made it this year but it would have 'caused a strain between me and my lady... There will come a time when things will turn around and I'll have more time...

Like I said above, I had allready been going thru some soul searchin' and then a bunch of folks who I really enjoy being with pulled out... This ain't no danged slam book here but I've made no secret how I feel 'bout some folks and, hey, yeah, had I decided to come it would be mostly to see them... This ain't about nobody else 'cause I Loves everyone here and, sniff, eyah... I'm gonna miss seein Jacqui and Rita and CarolC and Amos an', an'....

Next year will be different...

Amos, believe me, Eve (also known in some circles as the P-vine) would NOT enjoy the Getaway. Not her thing at all. Lovely woman and a helluva good musician but folk music isn't her thing. Well Bobert when you put it that way.... But oh my you people will all be missed.

sorry to say that I am in a musical production that I agreed to do nearly a year ago and it is now in conflict with the Getaway so I will unfortunately be bowing out as well.   Next yeat though for sure!

I can't get there either. But I know for this year not to speak on the post-Getaway thread because when I did a year ago I was completely ignored. Just wasn't part of the experience and made to feel like that too. So not only will I miss this year's, but every year in the future.

Giok, having had leg and occasional back trouble the last year&ahaff, I'm VERY much in favor of anything you're gonna do to alleviate pain in any region. Recover fast and thoroughly.
