I have just uploaded an Internet radio station which should interest a lot of people on this site. It is called Worlds Of Trad and it features traditional folk, ethnic, world, roots, blues, old time country and even some early jazz. In short it covers traditional music from absolutely everywhere. It is hosted by Live 365 Internet Radio (http://www.live365.com/index.live)

The station will be showcasing the down-home music and song traditions of people from all over the world, although, since I'm relying on my own collection, there's a heavy bias towards Britain, Ireland and the USA. The programme is three hours long and it is on a continuous loop. Listening is free, although there are occasional adverts. Subscribers to Live365 can avoid these.

All being well, I'll be uploading a new programme on the first Wednesday of every month, so the next upload will be Wednesday October 4th.

Fred,

No luck with your links. My browser (or firewall) doesn't like the javascript in there. The short link goes to a popup page to download the Player365.

Tell us more about the site, and if it is necessary to download and install a player. I think the first link doesn't work because you saved the URL script link that was established when you as a member logged on. We can't get there from here, as the saying goes.

I've just gone into it without logging on, and from a different email address to the one I usually use. It asked me to download the Live 365 player, which I did. After a short pause followed by the Live365 announcement, the station started playing.

I then tried the other route I mentioned. IE., I keyed in http://www.live365.com/index.live . That brings up a page on which can be seen a box labelled Find Stations That Play . Key Worlds Of Trad into the box. That brings up a second page with a long list of stations. Mine is at the top.

Click Worlds Of Trad and my station page will appear. When it does, click the yellow speaker logo and a seperate window will come up. After a bit of noise, the station will start to play. I've just done it and Tony Ellis is singing Sweet Sunny South, even as I key this in.

Fred...much as I appreciate that these methods might work, I prefer stations that work without javascript OR IE and that have direct links that can be pasted into any of the fine players I already have.

Any system that makes it difficult or impossible for me to use it without their specific software is pushing advertising over content, and I won't bite. There are plenty of choices that will play using Media Player Classic, VLCPlayer, JetAudio, BSPlayer...etc... using a .mms or UDP or HTTP address. Live365 embeds its actual address behind a complex address designed specifically to make it hard to find.

even with my 'guards' disabled, all I get is a file labeled "play.pls", and the players don't recognize it. Evidently THEIR player can decipher the code and find the link....

In order to get the station Fred cites, go to live365.com, search for worlds of trad and you should get it. I m a registered user (but not a preferred member) and listen to several folk, western and 50s music stations. Now I have WOT on my list. Thank you Fred.

As I say, it **DEPENDS** on you following their routines, using the defaults that MicroSoft builds into their browsers. Or perhaps There are better ways, but those with vested interest in advertising and controlling the methods can make better ways hard to use. It's very much like offering free TV movies, but requiring you to use a certain brand of set to view them.

I wouldn't even mind if they showed ads beside the links, but I have certain protocalls in place to protect against spam, viruses and hijacking, and Live365 seems to require that I turn OFF some of them. Either that, or **registration** is required, giving them an email address......cookies are one thing, handing out email to listen to music is another.

as I say, there are many places that do not have these restrictions.

If you do a Google search on "Live 365" + problems, you see a myriad of discussions, technical debates, help forums, explanations, and disclaimers on how & why to make it all work.

On the other hand, if you go to WAMU you can hear a number of different programs by merely clicking...and in several different formats.

Bill D, cut Frank some slack. I believe he's doing this as an individual, not as part of a radio station, apparently Live365 provides a format that works for him to share his musical collection with interested parties.

Maybe the player is not the best, but can you be more helpful and name an alternative for an individual to provide a service like this at no cost to themselves or the listeners?

KKCR, Kaua'i Community Radio, Hawai'i, uses Live 365 as their entry to the internet. Since I am a fan of Hawaiian music, I am a registered user. I have not been bothered by an increase in spam as a result.

I've never had much luck with "Live-365." For those who can't make it work, Folk Alley and Hober are both good streaming audio folk stations. There are also, as Bill D mentioned, many public radio stations that stream, and publicradiofan.com provides a real-time (if not always accurate) guide to what's on.

I assume you mean Fred?.......sorry if it sounds harsh, Becky...that's not the way I meant it. I'm very pleased to see the format and applaud the effort. It's just that he (and John on the Sunset Coast) make it seem like it 'ought' to be simple and obvious for everyone....which it is not. I was trying to explain why, as there may be others who experience the same problems I do. What Fred does is great....what Live365 does is manipulative....I hope that many people enjoy Fred's lineup, whether I can or not.

What Live365 does solves some problems while creating others, and is similar to what RealAudio did and what MicroSoft used to do all the time....that is, get lots of people locked into their format and trivializing other, often superior, formats.

Great to hear that Worlds of Trad has generated some interest, even if it seems to have also raised some problems. I agree that Live 365 may not be the easiest station to operate, but if a technonerd like me can manage it, there's got to be hope for everybody else.

Live 365 is a lot cheaper and a lot easier to set up than any other means of Internet broadcasting that I know about. And yes, there are adverts, which subscribers to the station can switch off, but how is the service to pay its way without them ?

Personally, I think this music is important and deserves much wider exposure, which is why I set the station up. For the most part I won't be broadcasting mainstream folk or world music or roots or the kind of stuff which usually makes it onto the major record labels. I'll be using just a small portion of all the breathtaking stuff I've come across through a lifetime's delving into the local folk traditions of ordinary people from all over the world.

So if you're having problems getting there, do please stick with it. My guess is you'll find it well worth the effort.

There are several excellent programmes on that site, but most have live streaming only. There are at least two however which have listen again facilities and both are well worth picking up. IE.

Dick Spottswood's Obsolete Music Show (13-00 to 15-00 hrs, Sundays) which features all manner of stuff, mostly from the pre-ww11 race and country and ethnic 78 catalogues.

Bob Bamberger's Hot Jazz Saturday Night (Saturdays 19-00 to 22-00). Pre-ww11 jazz and swing.

Both programmes are extremely well presented, and both presenters are extremely expert.

My station uses 365 live too. my show will be on this sunday Sept/. 10
from 1-3 pm pacific time...i will be co-hosting the Music Along the Feather (River) now listening to Worlds of Trad.. Mr. Garfield---- Bascom Lunsford . I have heard John Mc Cutcheon often speak of Bascom Lamar Lunsford .

Good work, good show. I am a VIP member so i can listen to the station I work on....it is low power and reaches 5-10 miles, and i am 30 miles from the station. KRBS (radio bird street)is streaming thru there too.

Having set up two Scottish Storytelling stations on 365 in June, I seem to be getting over 200 listeners a month. Narow casting they call it. I now plan a station on Scottish Songwriting, supported by the New Makars Trust, and another for the Edinburgh Harp Festival next year. Costs are about £9 a month per station, which includes a copyright element. If I set up outwith 365 I have been quoted a PRS / MCPS [British copyright collection agencies]rate of £200 a year!!

I am using Mozilla and have never had problems with Live 365. All I did was go to their website, type in Worlds of Trad and it was the first one that came up. Opened with Real Player, no problem. Sounds great!

I don't have a computer so can't listen to this at the moment. But I would just like to say your playlist looks absolutely fabulous. The tracks I am familiar with are all great, so statistically speaking I am convinced i would love all the others. You and me would have a great time going through each other's collections. Just to whet your appetite, I have a recording made in 1965 of Aubrey Cantwell singing "The Nightingale" in the Bell in Standlake, Oxfordshire. Never issued on anything.
   Have you heard Joe Scurfield's recording of a session at Canute Calliste's house on Karriacou(W Indies)?. That might be a little too hardcore evening for your programme!

OK, for those of you who are having pop-up problems (and are using Windows), try this:

Start Windows Media Player

Click on the red circular button labled "365" located on the tab in the upper-right corner of the screen, under the windows close/minimize/maximize boxes, then click on Live 365 on the menue that should appear.

If you don't see such a button, click on the ">>" that should appear in approximately the same location, and then click on the Live 365 menu item.

You should be taken to a list of Genres, where you can click on "folk." Bear in mind that while browser like, WMP isn't a browser, and it can be pretty slow when navigating through the pages.

I should say that I couldn't find the station under "folk," but when I searched on "trad" from the main page, it came up as the second result.

Haven't caught up with TRTG yet I'm afraid, but I do have a copy of The Brass Fiddle. If I've got enough space in the next programme upload (due this Wednesday), I'll play a track from it. If not, I'll be sure to squeeze it in next month.

Sorry, allow me to correct that last posting. I do have a copy of The Road To Glendalough. It's on vinyl, and is part of a large collection which was left to me a couple of years ago and which I'm steadily working my way through.

So, space permitting, I'll be including a track from it in the next upload.
