Subject: Andy M Stewart Song Book?
From: Kernow John
Date: 12 Jun 02 - 11:42 AM

A couple of weeks ago I sent an order for this book to Strathmore Music, 49 Earlston Road, Stow/Galashiels.
I haven't heard a thing from them. I contacted BT for a phone number but they say the firm isn't listed.
As far as I know my cheque hasn't been cashed. Does anyone know of these publishers? I'd just like to get hold of a copy of the book.
Thanks for any help.
John

If you search for that address on Google, the only hit is for a Spanish directory entry for a film lighting company, but the name Andy Stewart is there, and the phone number is 01578 730398.

John, the address you quote is certainly the first part of the address as given on Andy's website for ordering the book. The full address is:

Has anyone heard if a reprint of this book is in the works? I would really like to have one, but the ones listed on Ebay and Amazon are a tad on the pricey side. At the price they are selling them for, I would think the publisher would want to reprint. Anyone out there have one they would be willing to part with? At a reasonable price

I managed to get a copy of the songbook for a reasonable price but it took a few months of hanging about on e-bay. Its got about 40 songs in.   Is the collection a later issue with more songs ?

I have a photocopy of the big one... (ISBN 0-8256-9420-5) That is stored in clear sheets in a binder... It's called "The Andy M Stewart Collection"

I have a photocopy of the short one (ISBN??) that is just bunged into a duotang... It's called "The Andy M Stewart Songbook with words music and guitar chords"

Define "reasonable Price"? :-)

Hello,

I am also looking for the Andy M Stewart Collection but it is sold out everywhere, even the expensive second hand version on amazon and ebay are gone. I tried ordering it via my University and public library but they couldn't get it (I live in Germany). I located two shops in Australia which claimed to sell copies but after organizing an Australian who would ship the book to me both shops said they were sorry the book just went out of print. I even tried contacting Andy Stewart and the publishers to ask if there would be a reprint sometime, but I got no response. I have now exhausted all ideas where I could buy a version of the book. If anyone has copy they would be willing to part with please contact me. I would be happy for any medium: book, photocopy or pdf.

With kind regards

Matthew

Please be patient. I recently talked with Andy at a concert. Yes, he and Gerry O'Beirne are finally back on the road. Andy is recovering from some medical problems but now seems on the mend. He was in fine voice.
Some of his recordings (Silly Wizard included) were caught up in the Green Linnet fiasco. I don't know if the songbook was involved.
He is trying to get the songbook back in print as well as recover his master recordings back from GL.

Hi folks,

Here's the story. Andy had "The Andy M Stewart Collection" songbook printed in Scotland, then shipped most of them to Music Sales for distribution in the US. It didn't sell very well for them, so they dropped it from their catalog and shipped the remainder to me in 2001. They sold via his web site and I kept a waiting list of folk who e-mailed me that they wanted them. Over the years Andy brought me 10 or so at a time when he came over to tour and I've sold them to folks on the list. He only has a few left at this point. We've talked about having more printed, but it's not economically viable, as it would cost a lot to print and bind them, and the digital files are in an old format, etc...

When he was here a few weeks ago, I talked to him about issuing it as a downloadable PDF. He is concerned that someone would buy one copy and suddenly it would be passed around the 'net and no one else would buy it.

I may be overly optimistic, but I think the folk community is slightly more honorable than that. What say you? Would you buy a PDF of it for $20?

-Kate

PDF songbooks are a pain to deal with because you have to print them.

If you want a clean, readable, and even slightly durable copy, you've got to buy special paper, and you never know how its going to turn out until you've printed it all once, after which you'll likely have to tinker around with it a lot and then print it again--

The ink and paper alone will set you back what a professionally printed folio would cost--forget the time--still better than nothing, but printing in small quantities is getting easier all the time, and surely there is a market for at least a small print run--

Would something like publishing on demand be an option for Andy? I was thinking of this: LULU

Hi,

thank you for all your responses!

Yes I would buy a PDF version and would most definitively not post it on some P2P site. I also believe the Folk community does not go into large scale (i.e. P2P) sharing of that kind of content but there will be some who does it anyway. However I would still recommend an online version, since on the whole there are more people willing to pay for good music than those who would steal it. Considering that Andy doesn't make any money from the book now it would definitively be a plus :) I believe the trick is to make the online versions cheap enough that people prefer the "feel good" factor of paying the author and getting a bargain at the same time. Since the money can go directly to the author there are no publishing costs and such. The cheaper end price does not have to mean less money for the author.

I also find the Print-on-demand idea a good one. This company was bought by Amazon:
http://www.booksurge.com/
Since I am not a publisher I don't know how much of the cake these firms take for themselves, but again something must be better than nothing.

With kind regards

Matthew

I have just had a closer look at the publish on demand and it says this about royalties:

//BEGIN QUOTE

Authors earn a royalty of 35% of the list price on newly manufactured trade paperback books used to fulfill an order through one of our retail distribution channels, including Amazon.com, Abebooks.com and Alibris.com.*

Authors earn a royalty of 10% of the list price for newly manufactured trade paperback books and hardcover books used to fulfill an order through one of our wholesale distribution channels, including Baker & Taylor.

//END QUOTE

I think the old songbook at least was self-published and was mainly sold at Andy's gigs, so there wouldn't be any extra cost for retailing.

Any suggestions?

Andy has been quite ill. The suggestion has been made to those around him that republication of the songbook would be wise, but no word as to the feasibility of that idea.

Lots of us around the world would love to buy the songbook. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

When first posted on Mudcat, there were doubts as to whether this was genuine, but friends who know Andy better assure me it is.
I was lucky enough to buy a copy of the book when Andy performed at Innerleithen Music Festival some years back.
Copyright (1998) is held by Strathmore Music and Film Services in Galashiels, and the book was also printed in Galashiels. ISBN no:0-8256-9420-5
