I heard a wonderful country song called "The Dogs Are Gonna Miss You" at a song circle last night, and the singer told us who wrote it, and it was someone I'm familiar with, but I guess my EOA* is acting up, 'cause for the life of me I can't remember who it was.

I'd really like to look up the lyrics to this song, as well as the songwriter.   I googled the title but did not find it.

Anyone know it?

Genie

Is it "The Dogs, They Really Miss You," by the Austin Lounge Lizards?

I can't find the lyrics on line, but it's on their album, "Employee of the Month..."

EOA = "early-onset Alzheimer's"
and, as it happens, I forgot to add the footnote for my "*" LOL

And, yes, that's it, Midchuck. It's the Austin Lounge Lizards.   And the title is, "The Dogs, They Really Miss You."

Anyone have the lyrics?

The send-up of Leonard Cohen is worth the price of the CD. I once heard "Little Minivan " on a comercial Country station. Hope springs eternal.

I just bought the Leonard Cohen send-up and the Dogs song at iTunes.

Thanks for reminding me it was the Lizards' song.

Here's my attempt at a transcription from the YouTube video. Any corrections are welcome:

THE DOGS THEY REALLY MISS YOU
As sung by the Austin Lounge Lizards

I know the day you left, you said, "Let's never talk again,"
But I'm not calling for myself; I'm calling you for them.
Our little ones who wait at home are broken and upset,
And though they don't remember much, they can't seem to forget.

The dogs they really miss you; they're diff'rent since you said goodbye.
They brood; they pout; they feel put out. If they could speak, they'd tell you "hi."
They're too sad to play around; they hardly touch their meals
The dogs they really miss you and I know just how they feel.

Their tails don't wag; their hearts won't heal; they blame themselves that you're astray.
They're sorry that you felt tied down, and never learned to stay.
Molly's nose is warm and dry since she sat and watched you pack.
She figures that you're just lost and can't find your way back.

And Scooter's just a basket case; he won't accept my calls.
His squeaky toy lies silent; he's lost interest in his balls.
The dogs they really miss you; they're not themselves since you're not here.
They sleep all day, watch TV all night; they drink way too much beer.

They've seen "Old Yeller" forty times; they weigh less than they should.
The dogs they stopped their poker games, hoping you'll come home for good.
You know how they hate to beg; the dogs are really blue.
The dogs they really miss you, and you know that I do too.

And I'm pretty sure it's "If they could speak, they'd tell you why."

Here, I'm pretty sure, are the lyrics as sung by the Lizards. (I'm guessing one or more of the Lizards also wrote it, but I don't know for sure.)T

According to Repertoire.BMI.com, THE DOGS THEY REALLY MISS YOU was written by Hank Card and Kristen Leigh Nelson Card. Hank Card is a member of the Austin Lounge Lizards, and he has written (or co-written) lots of the Lizards' songs.

Thanks for that info, Jim. I was pretty sure the song was not just "sung by" the Lizards but written by one of them.
Is he by any chance the lead singer?
