Hi,and hello to all of you concerning me. Thank you! I started to answer each person individually, but this is better. *Per " She Moved Thru The Fair, I learned it from Margaret Barry, years ago. I have some great stories about her. My quick bio" 7 albums,on the road, clubs and concert halls, had three kids, left the business to stay at home with them, farewell concert was Carnegie hall. Contact me if you'd like to: originalmaca@yahoo.com I've just put up a website: www.jomapessingingpage.com , and put seven songs on it. Mudcat is a great site for those of us that I've always affectionately called "Folkies" I'm usually pretty good with old song lyrics and info. Again, thank you all, thank you mudcat,
Jo
*"MACA" is what my grandkids call me.

What a lovely page, Jo!!

Welcome to the Mudcat Cafe. We are so very pleased to have you here. You might find some old friends here, such as Jerry Rasmussen, Art Thieme, Mark Clark, Kendall Morse, Jean Ritchie, Frank Hamilton, and many others. There are some great young'uns as well. We are pleased as we can be that you are one of us now.

Couple of FYI's for you. The Forum homepage is divided in two sections, commonly referred to as "above the line" (only music threads) and "below the line" (known as BS: and which any topic is fair game).   Sometimes it gets a bit raucous down there, and much of the talk has nothing to do with music, at least at the first blush. You might find threads on everything from gardening to religion to politics. These discussions include folks from around the world so it can be interesting. The only thing we ask is to try and maintain civility and respect. Doesn't always work, but makes the place interesting. We have this area because matters of the day are often what folk music is about.

The Digital Tradition is also a part of the Mudcat Experience. Over the years we have "talked" about many, many songs and there backgrounds and origins. I suspect you will add mightily to those discussions.

So welcome to our village, m'dear. If there is anything I can do to assist, drop me a line using the Personal Message feature.

All the best,

Big Mick Lane

Howdy! Mudcatting is fun. You just never know who'll drop in for a visit here. Sometimes they even stay awhile. The Music is pretty good, too.

I'm one of those Mudcatters who has a torqued up firewall and a low threshold for dynamic interactive stuff, so I have trouble loading that page. Just a note for those who do visit, be patient, the Active-X boxes eventually go away, but each song seems to have to ask for its own permission on the site.

Jo, was there a story about you and Josh White - touched on in Elijah Wald's book about Josh? Perhaps I'm getting confused.

Loved San Francisco Bay Blues, by the way. hope to get to know your work better soon.

Didn't you used to be Jo Mapes? Are you, still, in Chicago or was that too many ages ago to count. I have the feeling I met your daughter at Paula Ballin's in NYC, but my memory is as reliable as my driving. Anyway, I am glad you survive and flourish and I hope you are back into performing.

Yeah, the website is gone, but Jo's MySpace page (linked above) is alive and well.
"The playlist is new, the songs placed here 8/1/2007, aren't in any of my albums, and are just my guitar and me.
PLAYLIST:
* WILLIE. Written in the mid eighties.
* I WISH THAT I WAS (aka Red Rosy Bush) Public Domain
* NOT QUITE FAR ENOUGH. Written in the seventies
* DUMBARTONS DRUMS. Public Domain
NOTE: about the last verse of NOT QUITE FAR ENOUGH -- I don't drink, don't like alcohol, and I needed a strong last verse. My addictions were men and chocolate. That wouldn't have worked. ('So pass that guy, give him here now.' or 'Pass that Hershey bar') Nah."
On her MySpace blog there are some excerpts from an autobiography in progress -- good stuff!

Hello, Jo.

Since returning to Chicago after having been away since the mid-seventies, I had reflected on the evenings friends and I had spent listening, in days past, to the great Jo Mapes singing like no other angel, in North Side Chicago clubs. What ever happened to that wonderful songstress and performer, I had thought on more than a few occasions. I'm glad to know you are still here and still singing. Bless you, bless you.

Warmest regards,

Timie

(my friends call me Timothy---the 'timothy' e-monicker was already taken on this site, so I reverted to my childhood nickname for e-identification purposes; but you can call me Timothy---tjd7@hotmail.com)

Hey Jo,

Lots of good memories. You could really sing!

One of the best folk concerts I ever saw was you, Rolf, and Frank Robinson in SF in the early Fifties. There were four sailors standing on their chairs at the end of the concert cheering.

"Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose" Folk music is timeless.

Hi Jo - hope you're still reading this.
I think it was '64 or so and I saw you in a concert at the Old Town School - with Ginni Clemmens and maybe Frank too. It was the first time that I heard SF Bay Blues and I'm still playing it today.
Got a chance once to talk to Odetta once and she told me how you got her interested in folk music. My next stop is your my space material!!
Also got a chance to see you at the concert in Evanston a few years ago, before we moved out her. A really great show.
Hope you might make it up here to Portland some time. Let Dick Weismann know at Portland Folk Music Society and I'm sure you'd get a gig there or elsewhere.
Keep on keepin' on, Chris
ps saw the Seeger documentary last night -- highly, highly recommended

Yes..she IS still alive...and she has another daughter...Me, Mimi.
What great memories I have of my mother singing when I was a child. Whether it was falling asleep with my head down on the table at "The Earl Of Old Town", "Orphans", or in front of thousands of people in concert, or the times I met really cool people like Tony Bennett, or B.B. King when she worked for the Chicago Sun Times.. or even hanging out @ the Playboy Mansion with my Uncle Shel... believe me...I have some great memories. She was a huge nto me musically, and I will always have the utmost respect for her talents. It's a true shame she never got the national recognition she deserved. She was a great singer, performer, storyteller and damn good singer live.
Thanks for remembering one of my idols....my mom.......
Mimi
P.S. She also has a son......David

* All the old email address's are obsolete.
* Art,(Thiem)Sorry I mispelled your last name.I had a bit of a crush on you,also.
* for those who had a crush on me,thanks! that makes an old woman smile.
* Yes, that was me on the Kellog's Rasin bran commercials.
I hope to be reinstated, and get to know all of you and what you're up to. Thanks, ! Jo

HI! And to your mom too. Me too--still here.

As Wolf sang,

"I have had my fun,
If I never get well no more!"

Carol, my wife, makes a great oven-baked chunky npeanut butter chicken dish that is Ugandan I think.

Hello Jo! I took a class from you at Harris School in Chicago, IL, and was a friend to your foster, Carla Gallagher (and Mimi, too, though not as much. She & I just didn't hit it off). At the time, my name was Shirley Bertok. I'm short (about 5 feet tall), and chunky, blond hair, glasses. Carla took me to see you at some coffee houses, and we went with you to WMAQ on New Year's Eve, around 1975. Mr. & Mrs. Studs Terkel were there: I talked to her without realizing who she was, or I would have been too shy to bother her. At the radio station, you sang a song with words that went something like: "You've been a long time comin'; you've been a long time gone. But I will know you when I see you: your eyes will say you're home. And until then I will make it through alone." I went to a lyrics search, but they didn't have that song listed. I would REALLY appreciate it if you could give me info on it. Another song you did (that I also can't find) had words like: "Was it really love at all: or something that you've heard love called?". Again, any info you could give me on the song would be greatly appreciated.

Speaking of Carla, do you hear from her at all? An AWFUL lot happened to me, and I lost touch with her. I would love to contact her again, but I understand if you don't want to give me her info, just in case she doesn't want to hear from me. My info follows: if it is at all possible, tell her about me, that I am trying to find her just to let her know how much she meant to me, and still does. If she doesn't want to contact me, that's her decision, but it would really be great if you could see your way clear to at least letting her know that I still think of her and love her. There's a little song that says, "Make new friends, but keep the old: one is silver, and the other gold." She would DEFINITELY be "gold" for me. Thanks a lot for at least reading my message, and I hope to hear from you.
