Hi,there are 2in the DT - one clean (Old Reilly) and one bawdy (O'Reilly) but neither of them address what the Clancy Brothers (who do the clean version) say at the end of the song, which I think is Fried Fish. Why o why? Thanks!

Think it's just a substitute for the "Boom Boom" of the bass drum in the chorus!

The following is my understanding, from something I read here (I believe) long ago. (is that enough of a disclaimer????)

Fish merchants (and other street merchants) used broadside ballads (bawdy and otherwise) to attract customers to their market stalls.

The "Fresh Fish!" is yelled at the end of the song to let people know what's for sale.

I do feel sure that I read this here on the Mudcat, ages ago, but my memory is such I have no idea when or in what context...

Good luck!

V

I thought it might be something like that - Reilly was a drummer / drum up business... anyone else?
