Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: GUEST Date: 14 Sep 06 - 07:15 AM Looking forward to this! The version of 'Clyde Water' on the 'Unearthed' CD is just amazing - far better than 'Penguin Eggs' version ('The drowned lovers') IMO. I do hope that the version on this new compilation is more in line with the former than the latter. |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: GUEST,johnmc Date: 14 Sep 06 - 07:24 AM Hadn't heard about this till now. I hope it gets the seal of approval from Nic's official site which at present makes no mention as far as I can see. I have just about all his cd's and he is brill. |

Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: Dartford Warbler Date: 14 Sep 06 - 02:03 PM I have ordered mine from the HMV website at £8.99 (including postage) I still remember (with goosebumps on the back of my neck!) his rendition of "Searching for the Hump backed whale" and Paul Metser's "Farewell to the Gold" at City University (London) Festival back in 197? Seeing Nic put the final nail in the coffin for me ever going to see live rock concerts such as Deep Purple and Uriah Heep ever again! Thank goodness for ear-safe folk music. And thank you Nic! |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: GUEST,Jenny Date: 14 Sep 06 - 02:07 PM A quick Google search shows that Fish Records in the UK have some samples of the disc, from the 5 that are up there it sounds excellent. Not sure if this blue clicky will work.... Fish Records |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: GUEST Date: 14 Sep 06 - 02:09 PM "I still remember (with goosebumps on the back of my neck!) his rendition of "Searching for the Hump backed whale" and Paul Metser's "Farewell to the Gold" at City University (London) Festival back in 197?" I was at that gig too (1978 or 79?), and well remember the heart-stopping performance of "Hump-backed Whale". Much as I enjoyed "Penguin Eggs" when it subsequently came out, I felt the studio version of that song wasn't a patch on the London gig. |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: pavane Date: 15 Sep 06 - 07:35 AM That's just what I think about the live recording I made in 1973. Some MUCH better versions than the studio ones (e.g. Blind harper, Warlike lads, Lass of Lochroyal), but unfortunately recorded on a little cassette recorder at a folk club, and not suitable for commercial release. |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: Northerner Date: 15 Sep 06 - 02:27 PM I have a tape recording of him playing a gig at Bradford University in the early 70s. Recorded on my little tape recorder. I suppose it won't be of a suitable quality to pass on either. Great for me to listen to though! |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: GUEST Date: 15 Sep 06 - 05:28 PM Pavane! Northerner! Wow, Nic Jones doing 'The Lass of Rochroyal' - I don't think that's on any record. I'm sure that if this stuff fell into the hands of the 'right people' then it could be mastered into a presentable form. There'd certainly be a big audience for it, including me. |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: Northerner Date: 15 Sep 06 - 05:50 PM I can't remember precisely what is on my cassette without looking, but it was also recorded in about 1973. I had heard that this singer was coming to the folk club at the university and that he was good. I wasn't sure if he would mind my recording him though. So I was stood outside the refectory (room we were using for folk club) and was having a genial little moan to the folkie standing next to me in the queue. "Do you think Nic Jones would mind my recording him do you think?" I asked my neighbour, one of our folk club committee members. "Why don't you ask him?" said my neighbour and he gestured towards the man who was standing on the other side of me. Yep, I was standing right next to him. Nic gave a little smile and said yes, I could use my cassette recorder. |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones recordings at gigs From: GUEST,johnmc Date: 16 Sep 06 - 08:49 AM Molly Music might appreciate any recordings made at gigs for future compilations which Nic can benefit from. |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: nickp Date: 16 Sep 06 - 09:53 AM Having sent Molly Music some of my recordings in the past, despite their quality, I am sure they would be interested. Ralphie ought to know, try and pm him. |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: freda underhill Date: 16 Sep 06 - 10:29 AM I am a big fan of Nic Jones and can't wait to get this CD - thanks for starting the thread, jOhn. freda |
Subject: RE: Nick Jones new Cd From: Northerner Date: 16 Sep 06 - 10:37 AM I'll look out the cassette. It's buried under a pile of newspapers and books at the moment I think. It would be nice to be able to help Nic. Even if he was only able to make a copy of it and play it back for nostalgia's sake that would be nice. It's good that I actually had permission from Nic to make the recording, albeit on a portable cassette recorder. The email address is on Nic's official website I think. |
