I am interested to know EXACTLY what the correct etiquette is for Mudcat users when it come to advertising CD's - either their own or others?

I raise the question because I am a Mudcat member who has a CD for sale mainly in the USA (Where I now live) that is generally not known about in the UK, where I was born but no longer live, and I perform English Traditional song.

Tim, please feel free to advertise and shamelessly promote your own CD .... LOL. It is fine, and even encouraged, as long as you are a member. Most of us have done that. We do play it by ear on outside businesses, as we aren't a free bit of advertising for them. But there have been some that are so clearly folk or blues related that we have allowed them.

I am sure yours if fine. Sign in as a member, right a nice promo, make sure folks know how to order, and good luck.

Hi, Tim - generally, you're allowed one entry on the Mudcatter CD PermaThread (if you are a registered Mudcatter), and one thread per CD you issue (whether the performer is a Mudcatter or not). The thread should include a track listing, background information, and information on how to obtain a copy of the CD. If you have a Website, please inclued your Website address/URL in the thread. If you want to post lyrics or links to lyrics, that's even better.

This (click) is a good example of a CD thread, as is this (click). Note that in both of these threads, I gave some help in gussying up the HTML in the track listings. The Clones and I are all happy to do that.

I suppose there are some people who come here only for the purpose of shameless self-promotion - but there are many others who don't promote themselves enough. If you start six threads to promote your CD, people will be offended. Same with gig threads. If you have a gig every now and then, it's fine to use an individual thread to promote it. If you have three gigs a week, people will squawk if you start three threads - better to ask me to set up a PermaThread for you, so you can manage and update information on your gigs.

A CD in the Auction seldom brings a lot of $$ donated to Mudcat, but often results in a review thread being opened in the main forum (here) by the lucky winner. Other Catters sometimes are moved to write a review when they get one as a gift, though I don't think that's the main reason people give them-- but you might think of a couple of Catters who specialize in your area, and ask if they might review it here. Why? Because then you have a review hung up forever where you can link people to in your advertising, as well as a quotable one (or more) you can add to your promo materials and/or website.

There's an Auction FAQ thread around here somewhere if you decide to give that a try.

Good luck with it in any case! And congratulations on getting it DONE-- that is something to be quite proud of in itself!
